Ablett is both a better inside and outside midfielder than Pendlebury is. He has been the clear best player in the competition for a long time now and most of that period has him playing in a side where he is the only player opposition teams think about. Pendlebury on the other hand has played in a midfield that is the competitions strongest and which also has had players like Swan, Beams, Thomas, Didak and now even Sidebottom copping opposition tags. The biggest difference for me between the two though is that Ablett is a much more consistent match winner. Pendlebury is consistently very very good but it's not that often that he wins games off his boot. Ablett has does this quite frequently imo and it's what really distuinshes him as the greatest midfield I've ever seen (and daylight is second).

Ablett is an explosive player who is very exciting to watch. Some of his performances can put you on the edge of your seat. Pendlebury doesn't have this x factor, pendlebury on the other hand has the ability to slow down time and manages to find space. He never looks rushed, always looks poised and always hits targets. Pendlebury is the "classy" midfielder. I think goes against him when neutrals watch us play. You know when Ablett is in a high pressure situation and pulls another magic moment out of nowhere, its almost impossible to know when pendlebury feels pressured as 99% of the time when pendlebury in heavy traffic he makes it look like he's just playing kick to kick.

If anything, Pendles has gone up (significantly) in my estimation this year, with his performances as captain. I was one of the doubters about him being captain, and now I cant believe I had questions.

I know I've got this quote wrong, and I dont know who said it, but the gist of it is this: some people, on assuming leadership, wither and shrink in the role. Others grow and prosper. Nuff said.

Have to give Ablett the edge, just because he is more noticeable, this lifts his team mates and contributes to a better team performance. Penders however is the silky smooth, effortless type that just glides through a game accumulating possessions without effort and hitting up his team mates almost seemlessly. Because of this he will never poll as well as Gaz.

was at the north/GC game on the weekend. went to see what i thought would be a good game, and to watch ablett.

i used to say that about his old man. both are freaks. but this new model is far far more consistent.

ablett >> pendlebury, and by a fair space.

be content to have the 2nd best player in the game..........and a few more in the top 22. helps make a good team.

and as far as the argument and how important this argument is, go visit the carlton board where such things are important.

doesnt win them many games.

Selwood is my 3rd people need to watch him closer without him Geelong wouldn't of won all the flags imo and also wouldn't be still winning games.

He goes off with the blood rule because he is similar attack on the ball that our own Luke Ball once had when younger at Saint Kilda with reckless abandon. He has pace to burst out is always damaging with the ball by hand or foot and has now added goal kicking to his resume.

When Geelong need a lift he drags them on his back, Steve J is the cream but Selwood is a beast.

Coincidently Ablett has only been unanimously rated number 1 with his move to GC where opposition didn't put any time into him most weeks in fact only 3 clubs bothered to tag him until this year.
Going off the theory of he can have 50 we will still win but as GC got better last year teams will now have to start planning for him or risk what happened to us.

Abletts turn of speed and ability to kick more goals seperates him. No shame being #2 to this bloke he is right up there as a great.

I just want Pendles to beat Simon Blacks medal haul...that's what I predicted early days

Pendles is clearly second best in the comp - and I think the majority of commentators and fans would agree. (which is a great achievement).

But there is still daylight between him and Ablett... IMO it is not a contest. Obviously there is goal kicking, then the consistent ability to be a 'game changer', not just a 'quarter changer', and I think Ablett is much better at dealing with a hard tag. I don't think you can underestimate how well Ablett has played at Gold Coast when for a lot of that time, he was doing most of the midfield work.
To make a comparison you would have to take Beams, Swan and Ball out of our lineup and see how Pendles plays then.

WTF people????:confused::confused:

This is a PENDLEBURY thread, if I want to watch scrubbers indulging in a Gaz wankfest I'll lurk in the GC board:p

Don't get me wrong I love Gaz and the quality he brings to every game he plays BUT. . . .

This thread is about our Captain, Mr Sleek and time bandit extroadinaire :thumbsu:

Came in to post pretty much exactly the same thing.

He has risen even further in my view, if that possible.

We can't underestimate how much is involved in being an AFL captain

Did you read the OP? The whole premise of the thread is about comparing Ablett to Pendlebury

i have pendles equal with gaj, but for the sake of conversation

1. ablett
2. pendles
3. watson
4. mitchell
5. stevie j
6. selwood
7. swan

thats probably my order with griffin and dangerfield around the mark aswell.
I think you're overrating Watson a bit, but this list would suggest to me that you are either Sam Mitchell himself or in his immediate family - He doesn't really belong in the discussion of the players you're talking about. He's a gun, but he's a step below this tier of midfielders who much more directly influence the results of close games with their performances.

That you'd have him and not Dangerfield on your list equals a massive oversight and error in judgment, IMO.

fair call on mitchell, i do have alot of love for the way he plays and he is one of the mids with pendles and watson that very very rarely turn the ball over. rarely tears a game apart but it's even rarer that he isn't one of the top contributors.

but watson for me is and absolute gun and is without a doubt a step above selwood, danger and the rest, he is very efficient and consistent.

A lot of people dont appreciate how good these type of players are until you watch them live also.

Seeing him move through congestion and basically all the opposition players just peel away, is amazing to watch. He is always two plays ahead of everyone else also.

Judd is another ive been in awe of after seeing a live match of him.

Ablett still has the title.....for now. Pendlebury is smooth moving his way to this label!!

He goes off with the blood rule every game because hes ducking and diving and shrugging like a ******* moron. never seen all this ducking bullshower from luke ball a geniune hard nut without the ducking and sooking crybaby bullshower

Until Pendles can consistently hit the score board like Ablett jnr does he won't overtake him or be his equal. But he is a close 2nd.

Pendles Tackles more then Ablett

Less talk more Dinglebury worship

The Pendlebury effect on opposition supporters

aCp1RFK.jpg

goal sense : ablett>pendles
pure midfeild ability pendles>ablett
speed:ablett >pendles
ability to lift his team and bring teammates into the match : pendles>ablett
freakishness: both are freakish in their own nature
a) ablett is freakish in his ability to breakaway from stoppages and his general 360 degree game awareness. He can do
things on the ground that no other player can.
b) Pendles is freakish in his ability to slow down time itself and work his way through congested situations. His skills in
traffic are by far the best in the comp, and it is freakish because most other players dont dispose the as cleanly as
pendles.
x factor- it comes down to their freakish ability , reason ablett beats pendles here is because he has the crazy knack of doing the impossible and kicking goals from ridiculous angles and positions. WHere as pendles forte is his ability to give us the clean breakaway from stoppages at any situation, which isnt exactly an x-factor becuuse he does it everysingle time.
