After watching scotty on the w/e for willy in the prelim, i struggle to see how he got best for the seagulls.

He doesnt seem to have the natural ability of a bloke that should be taken at pick 5, and whenever he gets the pill, he is totally lost with it.

I will say he does find it well, but when he gets it he doesnt run hard and he just has no idea what he should do with it!!!

what are our thoughts on scotty?

i dunno... that will only really improve his fitness...
i'm more worried about the way he uses the ball and how he has no idea what to do once he's got it

In that game Pendles looked very tired. I wouldn't blame him, he is an 18yr old playing a very tough game. I agree with Murray, he will be good after he does a full Pre-season.

so surprised at the amount of negative comments about this bloke.. i thought he looked a class above and did some fantastic things, but also made some mistakes. but you know, pretty good for a first year player! everyone wait till he's had a non-sick preseason, then we can all crucify him and blame the club for stuffing up another draft.

I'm not surprised that Pendles was named best at all. He was very good, especially in the second half. He has great class, great hands, great evasion. He wins the ball in traffic much better than people give him credit for. He doesn't have a lot of pace, but with his height and elusiveness that won't hurt him too badly.

For mine, he's the classiest player that Collingwood has recruited since Didak. Everything he's done this year he's done off an extremely limited preparation because of glandular fever in the preseason. Next year, with a full preseason under his belt, we'll get a better impression of what he's capable of.

I know you're probably talking in respect to silkiness and skill, but in my mind, class encompasses everything about Dale Thomas.

Thomas has class in terms of his movement, his creativity and his flair. I know his kicking still needs to improve a little (although I think his kicking most commonly lets him down when he pushes for distance - This should change when he bulks up a bit and doesn't have to put so much effort into it) but everything else about him is all class.

As for how fitness will affect Pendlebury, lets not forget that he's really only 2 years back into the game of football, he's now playing at the highest level, and he didn't have a pre-season to bulk up and add fitness. That surely has to make a play on his confidence to do certain things on the field, and may affect his decision making in terms of the risks he is willing to take.

When he is confident in his ability to withstand the physical pressure and keep up with the pace of the game, you would be amazed at how much his decision making could improve.

i agree... thomas is the man i am comparing him too... the kid is all class and has such a confidence with the ball that makes u stand up and enjoy every single possession he gets!

Pendles will be a very smooth ball acumulater who has already shown us that he is very hard to tackle. He has a great awareness for a kid and never wastes a possesion. He is also one of those gifted individuals who has the ability to make his own time. this one is a keeper and will be a star for the magic stripes of black and white.

Yeah, the jury is still out a little bit. I think Coll supporters have a habit of claiming someone is a star well before they are. Even Rusling need to show much more to cnovince that he will become a regular contributor, let alone a star.

My thoughts on Pendles are as follows. A lot of potential and worth a punt, but he hasn't justified his pick 5 yet - which is not to say he won't. Question marks over his pace (and intensity) and certainly not an inside player. Skills are good but not great at the moment, but should get much better. Also, height doesn't mean anything unless you use it, and I don't see him yet being the type of wingman to outmark anybody (similar to Lonie - same height.)

His strengths are undoubtedly his awareness in traffic, and his evasiveness in traffic, but having said that he still isn't an inside player.

I will concede that he did look tired in the final, and did some great things for the Pies, but lets not proclaim him a star just yet. Even Dale Thomas is not yet a star - although he has all the attributes to suggest he will be a chance one day.

Whoa, a bit quick to say whether he will/won't make it. Some people tend to forget he is a kid. He has a lot to learn about the game. May lack the confidence so far to create the run and drive out of the midfield, but that will come. I think he will be a fine player. I still remember in his first few games he wasn't afraid to take them on. Remember him stepping around Jonathon Brown with ease. I know he got tackled by Ash McGrath straight after, but that awareness will come and it may have been a lack of talk. But nonetheless, I think he will go on to much better things. We have picked up 2 futures midfielders in Pendles and Daisy.

Long way to go yet. Most games he played he was in and out and didn’t have a great impact. What I liked was just the odd thing he did do and the way he moved. That strip of the ball against the Swans was beautiful to watch. He looks a well balanced player.

My thoughts exactly. I like the look of this kid, and he has only played a handful of afl games and has played pretty well in williamstown from what i have read on this forum and in the newspaper. He is only going to improve and get better and thus i think he will soon establish himself when he is ready, but he has a long way to go till that day. But looking forward to it

yes, dal santo was who came to mind when i first saw pendles... i still just think his decision making isnt quite there, but some replies in this thread have made me a bit more confident of him becoming a good player in the future.

He is after all only a first year player

Iam a bit of a naysayer as well...I dont think he has any penetration in his kicking...Danny Nicholls left foot hurt Geelong more the other week, and he cant run the lines with any degree of authority. Reserve full judgement until end of next pre-season so see if his 'tank' has improved. He sure has not showed the evasivness/skill/poise of Dal Santo at the same age.

One thing for sure we over-priced ourselves by picking him at 5....Hindsight is a wonderful thing

He is a gem he is not lost it's great poise and looking 4 the best option!

I think Pendlebury is a good young kid, who given time to develop, not to mention a full pre-season, will be a great player for us, if not an out and out star. I think it's often easy to forget with first and second year players that they are still kids and that guys like Judd who are stars from the beginning (not just rising stars but actual stars) are an exception rather than a rule. Look at Heath Shaw. He's actually in his third season at Collingwood. 2004 he couldn't get into our side, and last year could only get a handful of games, and look at him now. And everyone said we were nuts for not agreeing to the Stevens/Didak trade proposed by Port a couple of years ago too (I bet they aren't saying now though are they). The point I'm trying to make is I think Pendlebury has shown enough to say that he has loads of potential and has earnt the right to have the time to develop that potential into him being an actual top footballer.

You're don't have much idea, do you?

Nick Dal Santo had probably shown less than Pendlebury at the same age. Pendlebury has shown more of an ability to get the ball in his first season, and although he wasn't fed games like Dal Santo was, because we were competitive at a side, he did earn a spot with his solid VFL play.

Moreover, how can we have "over-priced ourselves" (although that phrase makes no grammatical sense) when we didn't have another pick until #21?

He wasn't going to be available at #21, and he was the player the recruiting staff rated the highest at #5. Which of the players between #6 and #20 were significantly better than Pendlebury this year?

Maybey 'your' right that i dont have any idea but Iam guessing being 'grammatically correct' is not your forte either!!!

As for Dal Santo , the lad played 18 games in his first year of 02 to Pendles 9.Maybey some were fed to him maybey some were not, but you could argue the same for both.If you are fairdinkum you will admit that we were only competitive for half a season this year and 5th was lucky.
End of 02 people were talking up Dal Santo like he was the second coming whilst end of 06 Collingwood supporters are wondering if Pendles is the real deal.
