Definitely agree that Peter McKenna was a beautiful kick, he is probably the best drop punt kicker I have seen, but then back then so many players could kick. I often think that players like Clokey or Daisy that struggle with drop punts from in close should revert to what Twiggy Dunne, Peter Hudson and Douglas Wade did back then...when you are in close, just kick the bladder out of a "flat punt" it flies ugly but it always goes straight. Drop punts (unless you're Daics or Peter McKenna ) always swing a little off the boot and from close in that's enough to miss.....sorry the old coach in me is rambling again.
On the topic of "major talents from the past" some of you from the sixties and seventies would remember Graham Shepherd. Shep was a mature age recruit from Tassie (Greening was a Taswegian too) and Shep came and played 2 or 3 years before returning to the apple isle. Shep was as good as Daryl Baldock, could kick goals from anywhere, took 2or 3 speccies every week he just didn't get to play VFL until he was 28 or so, geez he could play though.
And for the Daicos tragics (if you aren't one....why not?) I'm sure you all remember he started as a centreman and would regularly get his 30posessions and a couple of goals. But do you remember the first game Tommy Hafey asked Daics to go forward? I do. Vicci Park, against the Tiges and we're 5 goals down at half time. Daics goes forward, Tommy clears out the forward line and it was Emmet Dunne trying to chase him!....lol...then Jimmy Jess trying to knock his block off, then Merve Keane, finally Brian Wood. Daics kicked a lazy 8 after half time and we got up to win by 5 goals. sweet. The best was when 4 defenders converged on him from all angles of the compass, Daics taps the ball back between his legs, back bulks the lot of them (causing the 4 of them to collide) and casually turns onto his left (non preferred) and slots a 50 meter goal...heaven.
