Re: Scott Simpson

Player Info

Super-competitive, hard working and aggressive player who plays with presence up forward. Vic Metro U18 representative in 2007 who can take a contested mark. From Mt Eliza FC.

"Weaver: Very, very sticky mitts. Plays FF or CHF and when he gets his hands to the footy he completes a lot of marks. Presents well, tries to play in front, has a nice little leap without being a high-jumper. Converts reasonably from his set-shots. Improving at staying involved after the marking contest. Would like to see him take more uncontested marks which would hint at pace and leading ability.

Back when contested marking was the number 1 requirement in a tall forward Simpson would have nudged the top-10. He is the best contested marker in the draft. Unfortunately the AFL refuse to kick to contests and expect there forwards to get into space on their own. Simpson doesn’t quite do enough away from the packs. Needs to improve his recovery, make some 2nd and 3rd efforts, win some footy with chasing and tackling. His one trick is a good one, just needs some stuff to fall back on when the marks aren’t sticking. In the AFL guys will play him tight, spoil, and make him look a clown going the other way.

"Gilly1972: The Dees could use a big-bodied KPF from this draft. Was a real toss-up between Tarrant and Simspon....Tarrant probably having more upside, but seems to go missing in the big games or against better opposition. Simpson (despite seeing him play a couple of games he'd like to forget), seems (at least on the surface) to have a better attitude and work-ethic that is less likely to scare clubs away. Didn't see him in '06 but apparently he kicked 6 on Mitch Brown in an impressive display. Unlike most mug punters on this forum, I really find it hard to get enthused past pick 20 in this draft, so I have gone for what I believe is a safer choice to at least make a solid if not spectacular AFL footballer.
"
"Ant555: Scott Simpson-194cm, 91kg-Dandenong Stingrays. (Fwd). Good contested marking forward who is a reasonable goal kicker. He has played a bit in the ruck as well but I am not sure he will be big enough to ruck at AFL level. Like Gaertner he looks like he is about to tear a game apart at times but it never really seems to happen. The way he moves around and plays I think he has a huge upside if he can find some consistency.
"
"AFL Insider:
Their new coach is said to have a plan to win now, as well as later. Lucas and Lloyd are the forwards the Bombers will rely on to win now, and they might use a pick or two to find some forwards to develop to eventually replace them.
Simpson knows where to move around the forward line and gives his teammates a target to kick to. In a few years, Simpson could be the third tall forward at the Bombers, providing another option around half forward with Gumbleton the main option.
The result of the father/son bidding could also change what happens with this pick, if they are getting Darcy Daniher then they may want a different type of player at this pick. There is also the chance that this pick is used to draft Daniher too.

LIFE'S not all peachy for the teenagers picked at today's National Draft.

Imagine facing Cam Mooney in a tackling drill, a tongue-lashing from Bomber, Matthew Scarlett on mad-Monday.

But 2007 draftee Scott Simpson hopes to reassure his teammates to-be that the big-league isn't all that scary.

"They're all good blokes, I was hoping they would be, I was hoping they wouldn't be arrogant but there was none of that," he said this week.

"When I first got down there it was pretty nerve-racking, just walking in and seeing Ablett and Mooney around me.

"That probably took a week or two to get over but because you're there everyday, you start seeing them more and suddenly they don't seem so big."

Simpson believes he's made a solid start to his life as a Cat.

The key forward had slotted 17 goals after five games in the VFL before knee-surgery slowed him down.

"I think my pre-season was pretty good and that just led into the first few games," he said.

With Cat defender Matthew Egan now out for the season, Simpson acknowledges his big-frame could be needed in the back-half in 2009.

But the number 44 pick is solely focussed on tasting some pre season cup action.

"We haven't really spoken about it (position with coaching staff), they just said to work really hard over summer and take my opportunities.

"Whether or not I play forward doesn't really bother me."

Before any of that, he has some simple advice for the four new-draftees to the club.

" I'd tell any new draftee to be a bit more confident."
