OK he is doubtful with a sprained ankle. Didn't train today and Crows generally don't select players if they don't get through wednesday's training session.

As you all know I am not the biggest fan but he has sloted in nicely on a HFF. Its not that I don't like the bloke. Quite contrary, I think he has something to offer but I would like him to improve in 3 areas:

1. put on at least another 8 kg so he is somewhat the right size to play in KP.
2. improve his kicking
3. improve his consistency.

I an just looking through his stats and he has struck me as somewhat of a quiet achiever. He is averaging 12.8 possesions, 5.2 marks, 1.6 goals and 2.6 tackles a match which is not as bad as I initially anticipated. He has had 15 shots at goal for the return of 8 goals 7 behinds which tells us he is a crappy kick.

How have you seen his contribution so far this year and do you think we might miss him a bit more that we first thought against Port if in fact he fails his fitness test??????

Thoughts??????

first off how was he injured?

and second, IMO I would only play 100% fit players (which is why I'm against crawford at the moment) and players that have shown good form. If we are cut by injuries, I would play the better formers first before the unfit ones. I just dont like the idea of him hurting the injury more or only playing a quarter.

If he doesn't come up for the game, of course we will miss him. He's one of the very rare few who can take an overhead mark up forward in our team.

Those stats as average stats for a guy playing a combination of HFF and FP are pretty good, and I'd have to say that's what he has been overall - pretty good.

He sure sprays them though when he's having a set shot for goal - I remember saying as far back as January that you would not want Stevens shooting for goal to save your life. He couldn't even kick them at training.

Yep, if he doesn't play, we'll miss him.

Those stats surprised me too Stiffy. Might be something about the name Stevo that = "quiet achiever". He has probably been our best tall forward & 2nd best forward overall behind Stiffy. 8 goals, 7 points isn't dead set shocking (given our team record), but granted I don't have confidence in his goal-kicking. Jars should be giving him extra sessions for sure. If Tredders can be taught to kick straighter, I'm sure Stevo can learn too. I wouldn't write him off for this week yet, as he still has 1 training session to prove his fitness.

He should be able to be, because his problem is a much easier one to fix than Tredrea's.

Stevens just doesn't drop the ball in front of his kicking leg all the time - sometimes he drops it slightly to the inside, sometimes to the outside. A change in the way he guides the ball down should fix that.

Tredrea's was much more difficult, as he kicked with a bent knee, which always spoons the ball to the right. It's taken him some years and a lot of practice, but he's pretty accurate now.

I am glad I am not the only one surprised by those stats :). Seriously, when I heard he is in doubt with ankle injury I thought to myself "not much of a loss" but when I looked at the stats he has been alright. He is our 3rd leading goal kicker behind Johncock and Carey with 8 goals but he has played 1 less game than those 2. Playing on a HFF you are likely to drop in and out of the game but the pleasing this is that he has scored 3 goals in each of his last 2 matches and seems to be getting more comfortable with his role. I think the positive is that he is getting his shots at goal. 15 shots at goal from 5 games.

I guess what I am saying is that there is something there to work with. I would argue that he has more talent than Perrie but is more inconsistent than Perrie. Hopefully if he can improve in the 3 areas that I have pointed out he could be a very handy key forward for us. He is 22 years of age and has only played 30 AFL games up to date. Time will tell if he takes the next step.

I agree with your observations regarding both players. Perrie was in the same boat as Tredrea as kicking goes. Now Sarge is pretty good set shot for goal even on the acutest of angle. I often get crossed at him for leading to the pockets but he nails them from that spot most of the time.

I think over the preseason Stevens can work on his weight (Although I fear he os one fo those blokes who find it very hard to put on weight ala Fitzy) and his goal kicking. If he can get the routine right and concentrate on dropping the ball correctly on the boot he would be much better kick for goal.

Against the Cats I was impressed with his 1 grab contested pack marks & also his ability to read the ball in the windy conditions better than most ... though I had no confidence in him kicking a set shot for goals on about a 45 degree angle. He's actually been better with his snap shots at goal after crumbing the ball off packs! There is something to work with. Reckon there is room for both him & Sarge in the forward line as it gives us 3 genuine marking targets.

Probably a fair statement. Stevo has done his bit more often than not, but we have had way too many passengers in most games, which is why we have lost them.

You've hit the nail on the head. A piece that fits nicely in a puzzle that is our forward line but we are relying too heavily on him. Lets hope he develops into another Mark Stevens. I would be very happy with that :D

Those couple of pack marks were fantastic but again he had a ripper of a 1st quarter yet died out for the rest of the match :(

Geez they are pretty good stats, I think he is a good pick up and yes with a bit more muscle he will be more of an influence in years to come for the AFC;) How old is he by the way?????

What are his numbers like if you exclude the Richmond game?
Witches hats put up more resistance than they did.
That will give you a more accurate indication of where he is at.

I always said he would suit our style better than Sydneys.
But he does have a long way to go.

1. Gets a lot of posssesions as the leading forward, as we run out of defence. wonder what his uncontested V contested possions look like?
2. He has been better as far as some pack marks, but for my liking he still has too soft a hand, and drops marks he should be holding.
3. He needs to get his possessions in more dangerous parts of the ground.

He's a smart footballer, with a big upside IMO.
