It is difficut to find a position for him. He has shown us this year that he can play in defence, and be a key defender too. But over the years, since coming to Adelaide and even paying for Sydney he was a forward. What is his best postion, where does he play his best football. I think he could be a forward and kick 30 goals for a season.

I think his best position is as a 3rd tall defender. No doubt he could be a 30 goal HFF if played there for a whole season but IMHO he makes a great defender but not as a KPP. He is more of a tall flanker type

Agreed. He's a smart footballer, but he often gets outbodied against the likes of Lucas etc. He'd be best as a replacement for Bassett, assuming we have the luxury of playing both Rutten and Bock in the backlines for most games. Should get at least 5 years out of him in that position - good value :thumbsu:

Agree, though i do like him being used as a pinch hitting forward every now and then. Seems to be able to get a few goals a game when he does that. Pinch hitting being the key though.

He's really the ideal backup option for Bassett.

Thing is, when Hound, Truck and Bocky all play, there really isn't a spot in the 22 for Stevo IMO.

Pretty bloody handy backup though.

Thats blatantly not true.

He played games this year when they were all in the team.

When Bock was forward, yes.

But with the return of Trent (hopefully), the emergence of Gill and the progression of Kurt, Bock will no longer be needed in the forward line.

Which is a good thing, as he really is a very average forward. However he is an AA standard CHB.

There are not spots for Stevens, Bock, Rutten and Bassett in the same defence IMO.

Maybe not all starting in the same defense, but id like the versatility having them all in the same squad could give us.

Say if Bocks match up isnt working, you could throw him forward and stevens back etc.

ok fair enough I'd have him in the squad, I woudn't have him in the 22 though. Trent was also a pretty handy backman when played there and read the play really well and could easily perform a role a back there.

Give hinge a few games i say!!

Trent might even have to start in defence to take a bit of pressure off his knee. I'm still not sold on you BunjiMac (surely you must be Hinge himself), good SANFL player at times but I'm not sure if he can do it consistently at AFL level. He did have an alright debut though from memory and was unlucky he injured himself, he may have made the step up and played the rest of the year.

Wouldnt be much good for match up sakes if he isnt in the 22 :p

Not sure about Hinge. Got a feeling he might be on the out.

Hinge just won't be up to AFL level.

Will be an excellent SANFL player down the track, but he just doesn't have that something 'special' to make it at AFL level. Well IMO anyway.

Makes too many errors, lacks pace and his disposal is 'iffy' IMO.

The lack of depth in the draft may save him for one more year. Given the choice I'd keep him over a player like a Doughty for example, but I'm not so sure the people who count will be thinking the same way.

In his defence, he did go into the midfield and do well. So maybe I'm being too harsh.

I just don't think he will succeed at the highest level. Good honest trier.

He's our version of West Coast's Hunter - OK down back but looks much better up forward and usually good for a couple of goals.

Yeah you're probably right, I only saw the 1 game that he played and thought he actually did really well till he did his hamstring. Definitely agree with you about Doughty too.

On a different note I have a feeling Douglas is going to have a massive year next year.

Stevens is quite prone to making the odd shocking error, like kicking directly to the oponent inside 50, but does do a servicable job in the end. Unfortunately its these unforgivable errors that usually ends up getting the opposition a goal that I remember him by.

True, but I thought these errors became less frequent later in the season & his good far out weighed his bad.

I'm also not sure if there is room for Stevens in the backline with Rutten, Bock & Bassett - but his spot in the 22 should be safe with his versatility.

I think there is a spot for Stevo in the Adelaide 22, with Basset back its a little up in the air, but could be used off the bench as a "relief" player for our KPP's.
Is great as a pinch hitting forward, but when left there too long tends to go missing a bit, in saying that I think he is probably more suited to a forward role than Bock and would be a pretty good back up to Welsh and Gill. There is also the chance that his time in Defence, like with Hentschell has improved his ability to play forward.

Scott Stevens is getting better every year. I'm confident his 2008 form, barring injury, will be even better than 2007 and we'll hopefully also see less of his MSUs.

I've given up hope of him ever bulking up. Then again Bassett never really did either. I just wish he played with half as much intensity as Bassett does. Seems a bit laconic at times.

Kane is right. As the year progressed Stevo's errors decreased. He's probably getting more confident and feels he's actually part of the team now. He's turned out to be a very handy pick up:thumbsu:.

I think Hinge is in trouble aswell... As for Stevo he adds versatility to our team which is vital, even though he probably wouldnt be in my best starting 18. Craigys game plan is pretty demanding and Stevo has the engine to do it, where blokes like Kenny dont

I used to not be a fan of Stevens, think it was due to wondering why he still doesn't have an AFL body for the years he's been in the system, but I've let that go. Opposite to some other posters now, I feel he is one of the smartest footballers in the team, and ideally would prefer him to go foward. I think when Bassett comes back that would push out either Massie or Torney (Massie IMO). Like other's have said Stevens still gives you that flexibility to go back or foward, Massie and Torney are defence only. With Stevens forward my back 6 would be Bock, Rutten, Johncock, McLeod, Torney, Bassett.
