Yes. Our midfield unit was exposed this season and we do not have a single flanker.

Yep, I reckon Scott Stevens is a young player well worth having a punt on.

Like him a lot more as a forward, he seems to have natural attacking instincts, as a backman he looks a bit like a fish out of water.

All in all though, a very worthwhile pick-up

Now we have picked up Scott Stevens, do we consider playing his name-sake Mark in defence to prolong his career? Perrie, Carey & Steven with Welshy gives us enough fire-power. Mark Steven would give us some much needed height with Kenny down back. Certainly gives us some flexibility & more KPP depth.

Just need to get some ruck depth now.

I actually think that we will play Scott Stevens as a defender and if we get injuries to our forward line like we did in 2003, then Scott Stevens would be moved forward.

I get the feeling that McGregor, Bassett and S. Stevens wil be 3 talls in defence.

I would prefer to play Parker or Hentschel as a 3rd tall in defence.

Well it is quite possible, we used Mark Stevens as a defender for the first few years he was with us and really it has been only the last 3 years that he has played a majority of his time in the forward lines.

While Mark Stevens CAN play both ends of the ground, he is a bit older, a bit more experienced than Scott Stevens. I am not so sure that Scott Stevens will be able to switch from forward to defence as easily as Mark Stevens.

I just caught a bit of an interview with Scott Stevens on 5AA today and I didn't realise he was a Crows supporter before getting drafted. Bit odd coming form a WA lad but he said he went for us cos no one else did.:p

He should be here in about a week. He willl start pre-season from day one (November 5th, which I think its wednesday)

This article in the Herald Sun today virtually says that Roos couldn't have had much of an opinion of Scott Stevens.

They were desperate to get a tall defender, but were prepared to off-load Stevens for a 3rd round draft pick.

I hope Roos is a poor judge.

Swans to chase backline height
08 December 2003 Herald Sun
Geoff Poulter

THE Swans didn't get the tall defender they needed in the trade/draft period, but will go much harder for one next year.

"We are targeting, at this stage, maybe to trade away some early picks next year to become a bit more aggressive," coach Paul Roos said yesterday.

"We didn't want to go into it just for the sake of it and just pick up a tall guy.

"We had a chat to Daniel Bradshaw and we tried to get Ray Hall, but apart from that we were fairly inactive.

"We will try to develop Lewis Roberts-Thomson and Mark Powell and we have still got Jason Saddington and Craig Bolton and Andrew Schauble, so probably at the end of next year we need to go and get an uncontracted, taller defender.

"But this year we wanted to keep developing. We have now got eight young kids on the list.

"Next year we have got to be careful we don't get too many more; eight out of 38 is a fairly big percentage.

"It is very hard to draft quality defenders. They might be 6ft 2in (188cm) and under 18. You don't know how big they are going to grow."

Roos said that taking bigger kids with early draft picks was a difficult task.

"It does tend to backfire. There are obviously some exceptions, but we would like to go out to the market and maybe get a 23 or 24-year-old," he said.

"At least you know what size they are going to be. You are not punting on them putting on 5kg or 10kg and growing another 5cm.

"Long term we need to address, (but) we didn't want to make any knee-jerk reaction and take 27 or 28-year-old guys who might fill the gap for two years."

Roos was speaking at the Swans' family day, which drew more than 4000 fans to its old Lakeside Oval base, now known as Bob Jane Stadium.

Well he did drop him after a terrific performance in the qualifying final.

I heard it's because Scotty has polaroids of how Roos really did his achilles...

Maybe he has!! :D

Whatever Roos was doing, I'm sure he didn't have a hair (on his head) out of place!! ;)

As Dave said, he did play an excellent game in the qualifying final, only to be dropped the next week.

Strange that!!

Got the impression Roos was after a speedy mobile side
How mobile is Scott Stevens.

Seemed to be good when near the ball - did some good gives and setup play. His stats are paltry still and he seemed to not get near the ball enough - speed/mobility?

That is strange. Was there some conflict of personalities??????
Reading between the lines - yes.

Didn't Scott ask to be traded?
Again yes, I expect for the reasons above.

When I have watched Scott he appears to have good speed, mobility & agility. IMO, lack of strenght would be his main problem to hold down a KPP.

Yes reference made today by Roos re risk in drafting junior KPP not knowing if they will continue to grow or put weight on?
How much re adding weight is in the hands of the player themselves or the club?

Both parties need to take responsibility.

Stevens had a reasonable game against Port, pinch-hitting in defence when we had lost Seymour and Kennelly who normally play back there. However, that's the only time I can recall him playing in defence for the Swans - though he may have played there at reserves / VFL level. Saddington was available for the Brisbane game after injury, and Stevens was the obvious one to make way. I don't think there was anything sinister about it.

He was always looked upon as a forward option at the Swans. I don't think he has the pace to fit into Roos idea of a backline. Apart from Schauble, Roos seems to be trying to craft a backline full of run and dash. Stevens usually looks pretty agile when he is close to a contest but isn't particularly quick, doesn't seem to get to enough contests and doesn't chase down many opponents. Add that to the fact that he is still a stick after 4 years in the AFL system, and I guess the Swans believe they have better up and coming sticks to develop into KPP.

That said, I hope Scott flourishes at Adelaide. If he gets an extended run at the top level and gains a bit of confidence, maybe he will come into his own.

Thanks Liz, thats a pretty good assessment, I think your on the money as to why he was moved on - hope theres scope for further improvement - time will tell
