Watching the Francis Bourke interview yesterday Richo brought up the way the football club operated back then and how much of a lord Graeme Richmond was and the image he gave RFC.

So I just don't get why we don't revert back to those ways??? Sure its a new era and people are more politically correct. However we are 1 of 18 in a seriously competitive market that is only growing. The AFL isn't going to let us fall so we should take advantage of our position.

Umpiring - I assume this Jack Riewoldt business would have been handled publicly in the GR days with us receiving a 20k fine. The result would have been all the umpires knowing if we don't get these free kicks to Royce Hart etc then GR is going to come out on the Monday and name and shame that umpire because he can. At the end of the day the maggots would lose some of that ego they have and stop pingin us for HTB and give us more.

Trading & Recruiting and overall List Management - He seemed to be ruthless and if it were today would probably meet with players in these illegal times and organise contracts. Seriously the officials and players dont get there phones tapped, talk to the manager then call the player and make his first choice Richmond.

My point is Richmond aren't hated at the moment we are laughed at. Couple of ways to change that.

Win
Take star players from other clubs and give them **** all
Stand up to the AFL

Trying to cling to the old ways is what landed us in 30 years of shit in the first place.

I think there's some merit in criticising umps publicly and wearing the fine. It may be non-PC but if done occasionally could be quite beneficial.

I agree we need to be feared again and to be an intimidating force, but I'd rather do this via the scoreboard. Right now teams fear Collingwood, 2 years they feared St Kilda cos you were gonna cop a hiding on scoreboard as well as physically.

I can't agree with the GR approach though. Fine for the mid 60's and early 70's, however, by 80's it was hugely outdated and our club became blind-sided at avenging Collingwood's recruiting raids. They took Raines and Cloke so we went after ...Philip Walsh and also got Wally Lovett, Neil Peart and Craig Stewart

The ruthless player raid approach marked the beginning of the end for us, don't think it helped Pies much either.

Beat all of us to it.

The history of VFL/AFL is full of clubs who have plunged because they have been stubborn as to what has worked for them in the past and cannot anticipate how to changes in the environment.

Collingwood lost out on so many players years back because they didnt believe in playing over a certain amount as players should see it as a priveledge.

Carlton still paying through paper bags under Elliot in an era where it could be detected and penalties were crippling.

The days of GR are over. He suited his time and his methods didnt help us after the seventies. Hawthorn were bringing up blokes through the zones and reserves and recruiting from other clubs very selectively. We needed to become broke before we stopped trying to overpay duds from other clubs.

Too many things have changed for us to adopt GR's recruiting method but I do think it's time to be feared again and not just on the ground. We need to stand up to the AFL when we get crucified by the ego maniac amateur umpires and the MRP.

We need to do it properly though as I imagine a few might not be happy with the club coping 20k fines from Adolf Demetriou while we are asking for donations to the FTF

We have asked for a "please explain" for JRs treatment (or lack of) but IMO we rolled over far to easy to Rance's suspension earlier in the season for not getting out of Waites way.

Its time to take the AFL on and hold them accountable for there part of the game:thumbsu:

Cheers, I clearly didn't see any of 80s and was too young early 90s to know anything about that era. The old players just speak so highly of how things were done then.

He was definately the leading administrator in the AFL and should be a source of pride in the clubs history. Players did love his way of going about it. I remember Rex talking about him the week he passed away.

Its an interesting subject as to how what can be successful in one decade can work against you in the next and how you need to make the change at the right time. Maybe thats what Collingwood are doing with Mick. It means you have to move someone on even though they are regarded as successful at the time.

Hafey would win get massive results by driving players into the ground. Today he wouldnt survive.

Barrassi would not survive today. Present generation wouldnt react well to his style. It would be Zantuck at every huddle.

Elliot used to get players to Carlton with his gung-ho, we are Carlton method. Completely turned Buckley off at their meeting.

GRs impatience that worked wonders has now meant that coaches have never been able to rebuild up till now.

Seventies was more ingrained in the old style of Australian life.

Yeah, I guess its all about being proactive in terms of management thats why I am looking for something more. However it is probably stemming from Carlton belting.

Our management has actually been quite proactive, we have hired Blair Hartley as opposition poacher you could say.

Fighting Tiger Fund is unique.

Sport being such a unique market where competitiveness is promoted by governing bodies and success dreamt of by all clubs means we must be forward in our thinking and look to gain an edge on our competitors.
