AFL Club
Melbourne
I think that it is very strange that that scully's management wait until the end of the season for contract negotiations. Lets be honest...Melbourne will not be able to compete with GWS in terms of $$$ so I feel that we may lose the battle to keep him...which is an absolute joke. Melbourne I think should go to the AFL and try and put in place a rule to protect scully and other player like him at other clubs to stop them from being poached by other clubs. I am very worried...and it is very much like Garry Ablett last year...if he doesnt sign before round 10 this year I will assume that he will be off to GWS next year...it would be a very disheartening thing to happen.

Any manager would say to there young player to wait until the end of the season until we begin contract talks. This is because they are trying to get Melbourne's offer as high as they can get. If he signs with us now he may receive much less money than he would if he waited 6 months.

I rec if he does not come out and personally say he will sign or he has signed with Melbourne by half way through the season, than hes out the door. Like the Ablett deal, the longer this goes on the less chance he is of staying.

If he leaves the AFL has ****ed this up as it would be stupid if only after two years we lost our prized number 1 pick.

Agree that there should be some sort of rule in place preventing second year players or something along those lines being poached by new franchises. IIRC, the compo rules were changed so that Geelong would recieve more than just a 2nd round pick (i think it was p 26 that was talked about) in the case where top eschelon player like Gary Ablett defected. Also as suggested on radio Scully could have a clause put in his contract that he will recieve x percent more in line with whatever the player wages go up by with the new bargaining agreement, so Klieman or whatever the manager's name is is talking rubbish about waiting for that to be finalised, and as if he hasn't spoke to GWS at all. It also would have been good if he said that Scully hadn't agreed to join GWS, not just that he hadn't signed.
