Love digging up old threads of the players we've drafted... ;)

http://afl.com.au/default.asp?pg=news&spg=display&articleid=302095

Queensland's Kurt Tippett has emerged as one of the most talented key forwards in the country behind the likes of Scott Gumbleton, Mitch Thorp and Jack Riewoldt.

The 199cm 98kg 19-year-old will be one to watch come draft day after a four-goal haul in the NAB Rising Stars Cup.

Tippett was also impressive in the AFLQ grand final, showing that he can also have an influence in the ruck as well as up forward, and Queensland's breakthrough Division Two triumph at the the U18 National Championships in June.

I have seen him 3 times live and as well as at the Champs. He can play!

For those that think he is a project player I think you may have judged this guy harshly.

Every year the draft has a bolter. Last year we had Pendlebury and Thomas who most on this site had at 20-30 plus at this stage of the year. Before that it was guys like Tom Williams, Sean Rusling, Andrew Mackie etc etc.

This kid could very well be the bolter this year. He is a big bloke, very agile, can play ruck and fwd, good palmer of the footy and is a beautiful kick. Only been playing footy for 2 years from memory as well.

If ends up at the Pies in the first (might be a tad bullish) or second round I would be delighted
.

many people in the phantom drafts had us taking him at 14, so for us to still get him at a later pick is excellent. Sounded good to me at 14.

Lets not forget that he is a 19 year old and is older than most draftees. Has tonnes of Scope for improvent though because he's only been playing footy for 2 years or so.

I'm pretty sure he is 201cm now and 99kg.

That is HUGE.

Im excited.

Can't wait to see our new draftees in a Crows guernsey. They join the group on monday.

Kurt Tippett -the hidden gem

Really pleased with the pick up of the buyer and sellar.

Even more pleased with our second pick up - the ex basketballer Tippett.

He could be the hidden gem in this draft.

At 200cm this boy can play at FF or CHF and he can also play in the ruck.

He has only been playing the game for a few years and therefore has a huge upside.

Can take a really good mark so with Sellar we finally have a few KPP who will be able to take some good strong grabs.

Both boys have very good skills.

We have done well here.

Gill obviously taken as a ready made KPP given the youth of these players as a ready made replacement for Hentschell. I am not a big fan, but I am prepared to see how he plays at the next level.

Happy with Mackay and Campbell.

Would have liked to see McIntyre, or Hughes, or Westoff in our colours as well.

There is some real talent still available in the drat pool for the rookie draft. Lets hope we are better with our selections than last year.

Re: Kurt Tippett -the hidden gem

Around the time of the draft camp this kid started to intruige me. Tall, strong, can take a good grab and generally straight kick for goal. He also is advertised as being very agile for his height and has good skills at ground level. Couple that with only playing the game for 2 years and you have a player that has a pretty reasonable upside.

If both Tippett and Sellar pan out I reckon we could be set for a long time as far as key forwards are concerned. And if Hentschel can make a good recovery from his knee, the possibilites become rather intruiging.

Tippett is already a unit and Sellar has a nice frame that will fill out. The biggest question with Sellar is his ability to perform as a key forward after playing mainly as a ruckman in the underage comps. If he can do that we would have done great. AFC seen to rate his leadership potential very highly. Athletic 195 cm key forwards don't grow on trees.

Re: Kurt Tippett -the hidden gem

They had a wonderful target at full-forward in 18-year-old Kurt Tippett, who would prove to be the matchwinner. Tippett marked strongly to kick the first two goals of the game, and set up his side’s fourth goal with some clever work at ground level.

It certainly appeared that they had achieved that when Tippett took two brilliant pack marks to goal early in the term and take his match total to five.

They scored again quickly, before Tippett had the chance to seal the game once and for all after taking yet another vice-like pack mark on the goalline. Incredibly, he missed from five metres out directly in front

I have a feeling both will play some AFL next year - in minor and cameo roles.

Both have the background - playing against men in their local competitions.

I also think Campbell will get his chance too -given his experience at Senior SANFL level.

Mackay is likely to take longer - but who knows. At this time last year when I stated that Dougie would play AFL in 2006 I was derided by many on the board.

Our recruiters have done well again - for three years in a row. MInd you when you look at our selections in some of the preceding drafts- Krueger, Finnnen, etc they needed to.

Re: Kurt Tippett -the hidden gem

Tippett , if he keeps on improving he will be a gun. Dominated the championships although he was well built and played on shorter opponents and he was a year older than most. He has shown that he can dominate against emn as well though, doing very well in the QAFL. He has massive upside even though he already is built like tank. Pretty athletic as well.

Re: Kurt Tippett -the hidden gem

1. I have not seen him play. lets get that out of the way first off.
2. I do like the sounds of a big guy who has gotten plaudits for strong hands and contested marking.

To play the devils advocate, but how strong is the QLD competition?

Re: Kurt Tippett -the hidden gem

Don't get me wrong, i'm stoked with our first few selections. Kpp's are what we need and James did a hell of a job considering our lowly picks. Sellar at pick 14 is gold. Sheehan had Tippett as a probable top 20 pick, so at pick32, he seems a steal.

Re: Kurt Tippett -the hidden gem

Sounds like he has the right body for AFL :thumbsu: Not often these days you see 200cm+ guys regularly playing in the forward line, he would be hard to match up on. Hopefully he can snare some games in the NAB Cup, maybe even a few in the season.

Here's Kurt applying a ferocious tackle at last year's U18 champs...

I'm intrigued by this selection. I was first interested in this guy before the draft when I heard Kevin Sheahan talk about him on the radio. Only been playing the game for two years and is now a second round selection. The upside seems huge.

Good to see a few of the lads at the airport to welcome Tippett and MacKay. Why am I not surprised VB was there?
