I got into my car to hear a lot of people calling up and messaging to complain about some Adelaide fan that called up to have a whinge. Just wondering if anybody could tell me what he said to upset so many people.

Thanks.

Maybe he was complaining about the umpiring!!!

The clueless half wit said that the umpires were playing for Geelong (free kick count 25 - 20 > cats way) and that they were only playing the Adelaide reserves.

Gave Geelong no hope of winning the flag at all because they didn't play well against an Adelaide reserves team.

sounds like a pretty bitter bloke to me. It's funny how we can all watch the same game and see it differently based on our biases.

No better example of this than the Essendon game earlier this year. I came in on Monday morning complaining about heritage round and how the Umpires wearing white confused our players and gave Essendon an advantage. My business partner a Essendon supporter, came in complaining about the exact same thing, but that it was an advantage for us. I thought we would kick to an umpire thinking it was ours. He thought they were kicking to a 1on1 thinking it was a bombers player next to an umpire. Very funny thing.

I thought the umpiring seemed to favour them in the first half then do a complete 180 in the second.

Ottens being held in the goalsquare, guy floats across the front to take the mark, hits ottens, ottens retaliates by grabbing him - 50 metres?
Ling gets pinged twice for holding, once whilst Thompson runs around the back of a player who has just taken a mark looking for a handball off. Ablett does the same thing and the umpire invents a rule about being 5 yards away even though Ablett was also being held onto. Umpire not only cant be consistent but makes up rules too. WRONG

On the flip side though. Gill nearly had his head ripped off by Scarlo and nothing was called. Adelaide scored a goal out of it but it was more lucky than advantage (which wasnt called anyway).

Birdman flies to take a big screamer, the ball is zeroing in on his big mitts which are high in the stratosphere above the MCG. Harley being the good player that he is manages to get his first in there, no more than 10cm DIRECTLY in front of the Birdmans outstretched hands. Umpires pays a free kick against Birdman for a "ridiculous attempt", lol my arse it was a very well timed genuine attempt at a mark. Ridiculous decision more like it!

So it really depends on what you want to remember. I really thought it was a tale of two halves.

And if every team that beat Adelaide also cant win the flag it will be an interesting season.

Earlier in the season when Geelong beat Adelaide, exactly the same thing happened. A Crows fan called the radio and complained about the umpiring saying it gives the Crows a 6 goal disadvantage. The panellists just told him he was an idiot. So is the most recent person (and Bock). Those kind of supporters show very little respect for the opposing team.

From my perspective I thought the umpiring was balanced. In every game there are going to be mistakes made. They can complain about NAblett getting a cheap free kick but then the umpire didn't give one to Ottens when he was being manhandled from behind. Some things balance up, some don't.

Ablett was hanging around close to the player with the ball, which in turn kept the crows player too close to the player with the ball as he was playing on Ablett. That is why he was told to p*** off by the umpire, as opposed to players that RUN past for the ball. No holding decision paid as time on was in play.

Anyway Good Win and Good Luck for the finals...........

It's either 5m for everyone or it's not. They were clearly targeting Ablett on this issue.

Sorry I actually didn't see the game as was travelling.

But from the above it sounds like an adelaide guy had a free or mark and ablett gave away 50 for being to close to him? If that is the case then it was a mistake as ablett is allowed to be alongside an opponent while an opposition player is having a set kick. When they are close like that the umpire usually asks the team mate of the set kicker to move away so that it forces both players to move back (ie ask abletts oponent to move and ablett has to)

It is ok for a player to RUN past looking for the ball with the opposition in tag chasing. It is not OK to stand there waiting for the ball as you keep an opposition player too close to the mark, which is what the umpire was telling him.

If Ablett was being targeted about this he would have been pinged 20 times during the game, from what I saw this is what Ablett does and his team mates are aware of it as they always look for him, play on to Ablett(and why wouldn't you).

Nothing against Ablett here at all.....the man is a freak already.

It was a Geelong player with the ball. A crows player was standing right next to Ablett very near the player with the ball. The umpire asked Gary to move away 5 metres(taking the crows player away at the same time), which is fair.

Ablett was pinged for it several times where as other players do it all of the time without any consequence. It was quite obvious to me that it had been pointed out to the umpires and they were watching for it. Ablett even RAN back past the player after he was called back (ie. wasn't standing next to him) and was pinged again.

It's a bit like how Ling has been pinged a lot recently for holding off the ball. The umpires have clearly been told to look out for it with Ling and so it is being paid more often now. This, despite the fact that Ling hasn't changed anything he's doing and taggers all over the ground in every game hold their opponents off the ball. Shirley, for example, was doing it all day to Ablett but I can't recall him being pinged.

This is a common occurance with umpiring and one of the reasons it frustrates supporters so much - inconsistency.

Because Time On was still in play............You have to wait until the umpire has called for play to resume.

Well if Shirley is good enough to get away with it then maybe Ablett and Ling should watch the tape on how he does it. ie Not blatantly obvious to the umpire.
