Could the AFL finally introduce a Send-Off rule?

We know that the VAFA has one in place and that for years the VFA did too - the VFA had the rule in place if a player was reported twice in one match (the last player ever was Jeff Sarau for Frankston in 1989).

If there is report of a serious nature, could a send-off rule be used in order to keep discipline in place?

The umpires miss so much on the field, you couldn't rely on them to enforce the rule. Maybe the send off occurs following video review by officials (not Channel 7) of serious incidents. The type that comes to mind is Dean Solomon's hit on Cameron Ling that broke his jaw.

One argument for a send off rule is that rubbing an offending player out for subsequent matches is neither here nor there for the team / player he has transgressed, but sending the offending player off in the same game 'evens' things out to an extent.

For those who say it can't happen in AFL, what makes AFL so special or sensitive to the notion of an offending player copping an immediate penalty for extreme incidents?

never liked it soccer because it totally ruins the game when one side has 10 men
What about the offending player who decks your star, forcing him off the field for the remainder of the game. Is that fair? I don't really care if the offending player cops a 1, 2, 6 or 8 weeks suspension, as it won't affect my team.

if he barry halls him then it's warranted. but how often does that happen?

not prepared to send players off for collisions, high tackles, multiple free kicks etc. if we thought the MRP was a joke before, imagine combining that with the crapshoot that is umpires interpretation to make an on the spot decision about whether to eject a player of not.

Agree 100%. It would only be used for the rare serious incident. So, probably ask, Why bother?

I can think of two instances within the last 15 years. Barry hall flogging Brent Staker. And Adam Hunters dive against Barry Hall. You wont see a punch like that in another 20 years. Coaches will physically march onto the ground and drag the guy for the rest of the game if that happened. So why do you want to make rules up incase?

The AFL's credo.

Steven May this year went close, but it was still a football act.

Reece Conca elbowing a guy in the back of the head on the way off - he could've been removed from the game and I wouldn't complain. Yarran striking Chapman was pretty ugly.

Other than that it's back to Barry Hall.

I'd rather have 5 guys in a decade stay on when they shouldn't be instead of 20 guys sent off when they could've stayed on.

Are you saying that rules should be implemented only after an incident occurs?
Rules should be looked at if there is an issue. I dont see an issue with absolute mongrel acts in the afl. Once in a blue moon. People cry about the steven may incident. But thats a football act. Its not like running the knees over a guy after hes marked going to ground. Do you start looking at linsey thomas who concussed that bloke by a split second brain fade which was entirely a football motion as a "we lost a player so should you!". How abiut Bryce Gibbs tackling grey last year? Completely careless but still a football move to pin a guys arms just a silly second motion.

Also lets talk abiut the idea of reducing 18 to 17 10m to go if a team is down to 17 men that would basically be game over. How well some teams can split open zones ild be confident of hawthorn opening up sydney if we were down 40 points in the 4th. And vice versa. Imagine if a stupid umpire in finals takes out a gùy who tries to set the tone. Other player gets caught unlucky and gets him high and sends him off in a final? Ild be pissed off if pops catches one high 5m in and hawthorn go to win by 160 points in a final.

There's an argument to be made for a player being 'sin binned' for a quarter or something for a reckless, deliberate hit that sees them reported or something along those lines. But the game is very different to other sports that have send-off rules with our fluid interchange. It's a bit of a moot rule unless it means a team is only allowed to field 17 players or the player is binned for the remainder of a match.

Good luck getting that up! Not many people would like to see that I think.

They have an umpire for goal line reviews....

Remember the rule where any time a player was reported, an automatic 50m-penalty was awarded to the opposition. I think in the end there were 10 or so goals kicked directly from this rule change, yet not one of the incidents ended up being found guilty.

A disaster of a rule and this one could have a similarly negative impact on the game. If anything, umpires should make NO reports on the day. Make the MRP earn their money FFS.

What a ******* stupid comment.
Oh look an international soccer bandwagoner

This exact thread question has come up twice in the last month, so has the offside rule yesterday.

Soccer is boring as ****, people keep suggesting soccer rules.

You want soccer **** off to the soccer forum.

You do know it is possible to like both sports? And if you'd bothered to look, I posted earlier basically saying it'd be a terrible idea for footy.

But hey, keep up the stereotypin' :thumbsu:
