Nice to know Carlton has a mind-reader on the BF board! From Setanta's reactions on the occasions when Brown beat him outside the forward 50 area, I think you are deluding yourself.

Brown looked better as the game progressed which is understandable. His last quarter showed what he would do to Setanta the next time they match up. That's not a criticism of Setanta....just recognition that Brown is a gun, despite what some morons state on this board.

I think there's huge upside with Setanta and I like what I see. I also love the way he carries on when a free kick is paid against him or anyone in his vicinity. Damn crazy irishman:D

sounds like you don't mind a bit of a dabble in telling the future
Setanta was fantastic on Brown and kept him to a reasonable ammount of possessions...I'm tipping Brown would have kicked a bag on most other full backs .
The big Irishman has a few scalps under his belt now ..and he will only improve with time .
thank god we have him

Brown is the best forward in the competition.

So while Brown isn't fully fit Setanta did a good job holding him for a great deal of the game.

It's impossible to hold a champiion for a full 4 quaters.

The thing i like about Carlos is he's a punch first kind of defender.

Too many defenders today have lost the skill of defending using the fist..

For the first time in god knows how long we have a legitimate FUB rather than an undersized spareparts battler.

This is the important part i feel. Learning the game from the basics up means this guy has been an open slate to work with. His number one thought in his mind is to stop his man on the day. That means not allowing marks or anything of the sort. He is a very no frills kind of defender who first of all looks to reject his opponent posession THEN he just use his agility to get the ball himself and give it off to a team mate for the rebound. Fantastic to see as too many backmen try to outmark their opponents these days.

And he likes to spoil........giving himself the little fist pump when he hit that one OOB on the outer HFF. He knows his job, and he is rapidly aqcuiring the skill set to do it as well as anyone we've seen for a while.

I wonder how many times he punched the ball away from Brown. Must have been about 10+ times easily. Some of them went about 20-30m our way as well. Our backline's really starting to work well together. You often see them zone off their man to help each other out. This is the best defense we have had for about 6 years. :)

What....better than Martyn, Livingston, McGrath?
Hard to believe.:D

FINALLY we have a big defender who can play on a big forward.in the past big units like brown and gehrig etc have dominated us, poor lil thornton had no chance. o'hailpin is our saviour!!

To be fair to Thornton, Brown has rarely gotten the better of him. Richo was, IMO, was the biggest challenge for Bret, who's size and athleticism was too much for Thornton. Good thing we've got Setanta and Waite, who'll be able to match up better on him as given the new hands in the back interpretation, Bret wouldn't have stood a chance.

It will be a mental victory stright up against guys like Lloyd and Pavlich, who T-bird has done quite well on, when they line up and someone else has been given the job.

I love our depth in defense too.

To think we have Bower and Saddo to come in if required, Harts can play back. Awesome. Massive difference to the 2005 side, when T-bird went down we were screwed.

How good was Thornton tonight?? That interception of the handball, where i thought he was going to run on and score a goal. He's really enjoying playing as the thrd defender down back :thumbsu: It's great news for our defence this year.

As for Setanta. well i just love the way he goes about it - how great is it to see him punching the air with his fist, with a little "yes i did it" when he beats his player. He's so determined to do well for himself and for this club. His attitude is one of, if not, the best we have at our club.

Yep. He found Richo hard but thats no slight on him.

I was watching Thornton pretty closely last night and I dont think you could say he is following the new rules. As like most backman you have to feel where your player is to know where he is moving and Thornton was going a Sammy Davis Junior type quick-hand-movement from his opponents back to the air to make it look like contact was just fleeting.

I love it how the papers say Thornton was on Brown as well. Its just that Thornton had his opponent covered and went to help out Setanta. Thats what good defences do, not that leave it all 1 on 1 stuff like Carlton 2003 to 2006.

Carlos was fantastic tonight. Playing on the toughest KPF in the game, at worst he broke even with him. Even though Brown had quite a few marks, and ended up with a couple of goals, I really didn't think his impact on the game was huge.

If Carlos keeps going the way he his, he really could be the find on the year.

he'lll become just as good or maby better then ex demon Jimmy Stynes :D

brown & LLoyd got one thing in common their both injury prone ;) or get suspended

Best thing from Setanta was the fist-pumps every time he got a stop on Brown...

Whatever else he is, the man is a competitor. You could see he wanted to challenge himself last night, relished the opportunity to test himself against the best in the business. Every play seemed important to him, and he did a decent job as a result. The more he improves, the more that competitive spirit will help him.

His improvement from even the end of last year is unprecedented. No-one that I can remember has ever improved so much in such a short time.

Plus Thornton is proving to be quite a handy third option in defence - as most knew all along.
