I was thinking of purchasing a digital set top box, not the HD versions but rather the cheaper $200 to $300 standard digital versions. Just wondering if any one has purchased one of these and if so what are their benefits?

Also saw an advert on Channel 9 before the AFL season that they will soon provide a digital coverage during selected AFL games ie able to get statistics of players during the game. Does anyone know if this available yet, or when it will be available, and if the above set top boxes will be able to handle such features? Thanks.

Get one that is capable of interactive feature. As far as I know, only one on the market does this, a TEAC one (not sure of model)...oh, and the Foxtel box (but that is only available to Foxtel subscribers).

This might have changed, but last I heard that was it. The basic jist is that Setup box producers are waiting to see what technology the TV stations will use for their interactive features (ie. Java V HTML and mixes of both), and most of the TV stations are waiting for the setup box producers to decide what technology they are going to put into the boxes, before the decide to implement the technology. It isn't helped by the fact that, for example, CH9 and the ABC have chosen different technologies. So, as you can see, it's all a game of wait and see at the moment.
