I left early today, about the 22 minute mark, but did he kick a goal late in the game?

Someone said it was a good goal.

Thought he played well again today, confidence is growing.

Does kick like a Himalayan goat though...

His kicking does look laboured at times but hit his mark more times than he missed. Also kept Grant to 2 poessions whilst on him and applied good pressure. Overall his performance today was probably in our best 6 whilst on the ground. I firmly believe that he will become so much better with time and confidence. I feel the coaching panel should guarantee him some games and let him make some mistakes without the fear of getting dropped.

did you notice when he kicked the goal that his kick was much more natural. didn't have time to think, just kicked it

It's an interesting point. I've noticed on several occasions Setanta's looks totally natural and at other times awkward. Almost as though he's focusing too hard on the execution of his skills sometimes. Once he's develops some confidence he'll be very very good. His effort today against Grant was very good. How about playing him on Lucus next week? :)

There's so much wrong with his set kicks. He starts his run up OK, but then when he gets close to the drop, he stutters and then there's the drop. He drops the ball like Prendergast, which everyone since Curly Austin has had the sense to avoid. Some of the stutter is dues to a lack of confidence, but it becomes self fulfilling.

As has been pointed out, his snaps are better than his set shots, which means that his instincts are OK, it's just a technique thing.

Step one. A specialist kicking coach. Hire someone like Peter McKenna for a few bucks to teach him the basics one-on-one. Don't leave it to buddys like Prenda or Franger to teach him bad habits. It's not about trying to belt the suitcase out of the ball, it's about timing.

While I'm thinking of it, Carazzo could benefit from some of this too. He could be a killer leading forward in the mold of Mark Williams if he fixed his set shots. Earlier this year he played as a leading forward, and he absolutely cut up the opposition only to fluff his shots.

Excellent observation. I think this illustrates the confidence issue with Setanta perfectly. Parrot also has made a great observation. At times he looks a real natural. His instictive self has so much talent to play at the top level. His mind however self sabotages him at times. This is why I believe it is so important for Denis to really nuture him.

In general our club culture is not solid for developing confidence in players. Have just written a post about humility and talent that touches on this point with Setanta. Cartlon have much talent but they are a head team rather than a free instictive side.

Excellant point.
I thought today he really showed some character. His kicking is somewhat akward but is still better than other more fancied team mates. With his confidence up he will be a weapon, he will give us flexibilty of taking the taller forwards (resting ruckman) and also as a spare man in defense. With his confidence up I could see him dragging his opponent forward and kicking goals, his endurance is elite and would trouble alot of teams if used correctly.

I should temper my criticism with the observation that he was pretty good on Sunday. There was one time he should have left Grant to help Heath Scotland out with a punch in a marking contest, and of course his set-shot.

But otherwise he was really good. Those grubber kicks to teammates are a lot better than they seem at first glance, and he out-pointed Grant in almost all contests - not bad for your fourth (or so) game.

He's coming along nicely. Just work on those set kicks - with an expert. He's done enough to be back next week.

but he is already a good kick as shown by that ripper goal. probably needs to not do so much work on his kicking and just relax and have fun.

No, his set-shot technique is wrong. As in very wrong. That can and must be coached out of him. Like you say, his snaps are OK.

I am very glad that Setanta is baqck in. Lets hope he gets a decent run and that it is in the back half. He has a genuine enthusiasm to play imo and this combined with his athletic ability and height puts him ahead of many of the other fringe players at the club.

We desperatly need at least 2 of Bower, Hartlett and Setanta to become stable defenders. I firmly believe Setanta has the ability and needs confidence to fulfill his potential. Dragging and dropping him won't help. Supporting him with constructive direction will.

He really needs to learn from some experience and perhaps some beatings without fearing being delisted or dropped. Hawthorn did this with their young defender whose name escapes me earlier in the season. He had many bags kicked on him but still got about 6-8 full games at FB.

Lets take a risk with Setanta and see how he progresses. What have we got to lose at this point?

Good post, agree we really need Bower, Hartlett and Carlos to become a part of our backline. If we can sort out our backline we will be a lot closer to becoming a good team fairly soon.

In Carlos' first year while playing up front for Bullants he had a period where he scored many goals, including a bag of seven. If I remember correct he was scoring from outside fifty as well. The coaches may need to look at footage and see what has changed in his technique.

Carlos definitely played. Aisake isn't even on the senior list yet.

Maybe this is because when he is outside 50 he can just kick the ball but when he is inside 50 he tries to stear the ball and focuses too much on his technique. Similar to the way both the Rocca's use to be
