Guys only 18,000 were at this game but 180,000 claim they were.
Foundation Day Derby , East Freo Oval , 1983.
For the Young uns - greatest game of Footy at WAFL that hasnt been surpassed since.A game worthy of AFL GF status.

My point is ( points being queried will be typed in capitals )

Noel Carter was impeded by RON ALEXANDER
SIREN GOES OFF people start streaming the ground.
South Fremantle kicking towards the MARMION ST end of the ground. Noel Carter is 65METRES out. Huge TORPEDO PUNT unleshed hits the top of the padding of the right sided goal post if your standing in the centre.

Does anyone have any links for the game ???

No Links to the game, but I was there and my recollection of the last few minutes is:

Noel Carter gets pushed fairly and squarely in the middle of the back by Big Bloke, resulting in a fractured vertabrae, loss of limb, and various other minor injuries, including paralysis of both legs. The siren went but no one heard it.

Noel Carter manages to take his kick under extreme physical pain.

Idiot umpire tries to set the mark as close to the wing as possible and succeeds.

Noel Carter lines up from way over there in the distance for what the crowd thought was a hail mary. Must have been at least 85m out from where I sat.

He stands as best he can with a broken back and two paralysed legs and also a ruptured spleen and severe internal bleeding, facing Marmion Street, with the Fremantle Doctor blowing directly into his face. (I didn't know Noel was like that, but hell, there's nothing wrong with that).

Off about two steps (which is all he could manage due to horrific injuries sustained) he unleashes with the BIGGEST most MASSIVE, most PERFECT Spiralling torpedo punt in the history of the game, which sails through for a point (left of goalposts if standing in the centre) without touching the post.

Greatest game ever.

That's about right.

Hahaha

Yep as I expected , Was the final score if anyone remembers something like SF 16-18-114 to EF 17-11-113

Guys I dunno about the howling breeze.
But I remember a game where South was extremely wasteful in front of goals in the 1st half . East freo took there chances & if I remember correctlybuilt a 33 pt lead late in the 3rd before a late Jon Dorotich goal reduced the margin back to 27 at 3qt.
I remember South then finding there kicking boots to finally hit the front at about the 20 minute mark . Kevin Taylor then kicked a behind , Jeff Cassidy kicked a goal & right on time on Taylor kciked another for Old Easts to put them 2 goals up and surely that was game. As the South Freo faithful were packing up , Steven Michael with a free kick picked out Benny Vigona who played on and kicked truly from about 40 out on a slight angle. East freo tried in vain to clog up the game but as the clock ticked over to 33 minutes I forget who it was for South Freo crumbing off the pack and snapping truly . Scores level **** all surely left on the clock . Its bounce down again both teams desperate Michael thumps the ball 30 metres forward , onother scrimmage , another bounce, Michale wins that bounce straight to Matera who just gets his foot to it , it travels 15 metres intercepted by Rankin of East Freo who handballs to Alexander , Carter dives in fron of him and is impeded by the big fella , the siren goes crowd goes nuts not realising Carter gets the free kick and everyone is on the ground , order is restored to some extent , Carter kicks the point
A Truly great game !!!

I preferred the 81 GF..........the look on big bad basils face as he chased noel morton up the wing..... "if I catch that little white maggot I'll rip his arms and legs off"............he never did....A truly great game!!! :D

That wasnt as good as the opening bounce !!!
South lost this one due to wasteful kicking , kicking 12.21 dont win you alot of Gf's !!!

I wasn't around for that match, but many East Fremantle supporters tell me about it.

They also agree that the 1995 Foundation Day Derby was a much better match.

June 6, 1983
Rd 10
SF 5.4 8.7 13.15 18.20 128
EF 3.5 11.7 15.8 19.13 127

Goalkickers
SF: Arnold 4.3, Hardie, Winmar 3.1, Roe, O'Brien 2.0; N. Carter, Monteath 1.4; Grljusich, Townsend 1.0; Vigona 0.3; Michael, Mount 0.1; forced 0.2
EF: Cassidy 5.1; R Lester-Smith 4.1; Sterrett 3.3; Kerr 3.1; jones 2.1; Waterson 1.2; Cormack 1.0; Jenzen, N. Lester-Smith, Taylor 0.1; Forced 0.1

Umpires Buckey, Rowe
SF won the toss and kicked to the Northern End (so, yes in the 4th it would have been to the Marmion St End)
Free Kicks
SF 4,7,9,6 = 26, 15m 3
EF 6,12,12,2 = 32!, 15m 4
Attendance 17,560

So FH, your recollection of Dorotich and Vigona scoring wasn't right, but the rest was. I'm sure that I was there, but I always thought it was at Freo Oval. The Football Register does not lie though.
Other information about the game was that after a dog ran on the field at one stage, Ron Alexander (EF coach) was quoted saying that made 3 dogs on the ground. The umps almost went on strike over this.
BTW, after this round, South was on top with 9 wins, 1 loss and a % of 147. Easts were in 6th with 4 wins and a 82.5%.
Whilst searching for this game, I checked the 80-82 derbies, and a lot of them were surprisingly one sided in Souths favour. Unfortunately the 79 GF wasn't one of them.
