Not sure if you're still interested, but according to the Hun (I'm ashamed to admit I was reading it), Shae will be playing in the South East Australian Basketball League this year.

But the prize for the biggest career move goes to Shae McNamara.
The American was playing for Collingwood in the NAB Cup last year. This season he'll play for Sandringham Sabres in the South East Australian Basketball League.

I'm more familiar with women's basketball than men's in terms of attractiveness of the competition (no pun intended ;)) but there's definitely more money in this competition than in any other Australian competition below NBL level (and to be honest, potentially more money than at WNBL level in a women's context again.)
 
There seems to be a trend here with a few of these blokes coming from other sports.... and I'm talking about the Irish too. I'm not sure they will ever be able to compete with guys who love the "game of AFL football" so much that they finish playing AFL and then go and play in the bush for 10 years. There have been exceptions and one that comes to mind is Jim Stynes who really did "convert" to AFL football, and it's no surprise that he played over 250 games, most of them consecutive. I'm writing this and thinking about our two Irish imports and wondering if they have the long term commitment to the game. I hope so.

As for Shae, I think its a smart move that he goes back to the game that he loves playing. If he really is the exceptional athlete that he said he was, then he should be playing NBL next year.
 
Just caught a bit of the interview in the car, definitely has an inflated sense of self worth. Inferred that Hawthorn should.have picked him over Ceglar.

More talented players in the EDFL or NFL than him.

That's a tad harsh.

If he was really that bad then the club wouldn't have given him the third year. Sure, it didn't cost us much - but we don't want spud/dud/bums hanging around our elite footy club even if they come free.

It was a nice experiment. We all wished the fairy tale had come true. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be.

I look forward to hearing what he gets up to in future.

Going by the interview he did on Sen , he will be writing about his last year at Collingwood , in his book (when ever that is to be written ?)

He seemed to be pissed off about how he was treated at Collingwood in 2012 , and said that he virtually wasted 3 prime sporting years of his life by committing to Collingwood , and not pursueing a Basketball career in Europe instead.

Surprised me that he thought that way.
 
Only someone who had a serious God delusion would think anyone would want to read a spite filled book about their life as a failed basketballer/footballer.

Sorry Shae but maybe the problem is you. You thought you would be a big fish in a small pond.
Maybe you mis-calculated how easy it would be to break into this tiny backwater sport.

Well, with the benefit of hindsight, he was right. Can't fault his logic.

He took a punt and it didn't pay off. It's easy to regret. Can't blame him for being disappointed - he wouldn't be a competitor if he wasn't disappointed. And it must still be pretty raw.

Of course you can't blame him for being disappointed but we gave him EVERY opportunity. That is not our fault, don't take a swipe at the club on your way out.

Does he think we didn't play him as some secret plan to not win a flag?

I've made plenty of mistakes, I make the choice, my responsibility.

Good luck Shae, It will be interesting to see if you can make it at our level of B/ball.

There was speculation that he had been told that we were going to delist him at the end of 2011. And that Hawthorn had agreed to offer him a spot. But Collingwood then changed their mind (probably because Davis chose to leave) and Shae elected to stay.

I don't know how true all that was, but if so, I thought at the time he should have gone to Hawthorn. And Collingwood shouldn't have reversed their decision. Once somebody is told that they're going, they're gone. There should be no turning back.

Who knows, maybe Shae thinks he could've been playing in last year's Grand Final? That's fair game for feeling a little bitter and twisted.

Most of what he said on the way out was pretty good. His goodbye address to Pie Nation was cool. The only dark thing he said (that I've heard) was some throwaway comment alluding to all not being fine and dandy - but he wasn't going to elaborate further.

Yeah, that's one of life's very important lessons. Shae is still young (28?). Hopefully for his sake he learns.

It'd be a bit of a shame if he is lost to AFL. For the three years he was with us he seemed like a good bloke - articulate, driven, positive, personable. And it's not necessary to play an AFL game to succeed in the industry - Eddie Maguire, James Brayshaw, Caroline Wilson, etc, etc are examples of that. Probably most of the people behind the scenes of the AFL have never played a Senior game.
 
I can see why Shae felt aggrieved after last season especially, he knocked back the hawks to stay with us after we flip flopped on him.

The ruck the hawks drafted after he knocked then back ( ex Brisbane player) then proceeded to play games and be in and around the best 22 thereafter. No doubt he felt it should have been his place, instead he busted his ass in our vfl side getting used in positions he would never fill in an afl game (ff/fb, chf/chb and even wing towards the end!)
 
Problem for Shae though is that he was never any good. Yes, he was tall and athletic but he had the footballing nouse of my pet cat.

If that rumour is true about Hawthorn then I guess he made a sliding door error. He can regret that all he likes but it was his error. Even so, he would have just stunk it up there because he couldn't play the game. If the Hawks were so enamoured with him they would have picked him up this year but they chose Ceglar instead (yes i know he's younger).

Btw Opti, they had to play him in those positions because he really couldn't ruck for shit!
 
I'm sure they never have any problem getting enough guys to play with prizes like that!
