no, nobody should leave. I am just saying that immigration needs to be reduced ! Soon australia will have more foreign people in it than actual 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc etc generation australians !

I agree that Australia is for Australians...but what are Australians? Basically a lot of people whi migrated here, mainly from Europe but in recent years from all over the world.

What I believe we have created , though, is an Australian culture and we need to be very careful about peserving that culture or having it change in a direction we approve of.

One of the things I have realised since Sept 11th is that many people clearly migrate for IMO wrong reasons wrt the country they migrate to.
I believe that a person coming to Australia should want to become an Australian and whilst not forgetting their roots they should, after a period of say three years, give up their former citizenship and take on Australian citizenship or return to their country of origin. I find it quite appalling to see UK citizens brandishing Afghanistan flags and wanting to fight against UK soldiers. I would like to think that if we were ever in a war that no Australian would even think of fighting against Australian troops. Some people just want to come here because the standard of living is better but that is all take and no give. I believe a commitment to Australia is necessary from each immigrant and without that commitment there should be no entry.

spot on ! Those people who burned USA flags after the USA, whose side we are on,started bombing afghanistan should be shipped back to where they came from. Also anyone breaking the law for anything should go back too.

Australia is under populated. More people would be better for the economy. Australia is such a big country, yet it only has like 20 million people.

I wanna ask a question here, if the boat people were from Britain.....what would the Australian government do with them

Last time I checked, Australia had about 20 million people. About 1 million of them voted for One Nation at the last election (and I might add, that was more votes than what the Democrats received). I million out of 20 million might make a quorum, but it doesn't make a majority.

If you ever get the chance to see the world, when you compare it to Australia, you'll find that we're one of the least racist countries in the world.

Lets say one nation was about 10%, this is about the same as the various national, fascist or BM parties get in europe. We're probably just as inclined to be racist, but it hardly ever shows up because there is still very little real hardship in Oz.

When it becomes a problem is when so called 'statesmen' leaders cynically exploit it.

Its nothing to do with being racist. It is common sense. If you are born here then you are australian.

Not the vast majority...EVERYONE IS A RACIST

And that is because the word 'racist' has been redefined to mean 'anything where race is involved'.

It used to mean " a person who believed one race is superior to another' but who cares about a dictionary anymore

And the fact is that mankind has been given the gift of choice...ie discrimination. When we decide what to eat we discriminate, when we choose who to ask out on a date we discriminate. If you choose not to invite someone out from a particular race you are discriminating and you are a racist. We all are racists..QED

I am coming from the perspective of someone from an Asian background, so here's my take.

I guess one's perception of racism depends on where you live. I live in Melbourne, which is something of a melting pot, and hence, to my experience, I come across very little racism. However, take a one hour flight down south to Hobart (which isn't as much a melting pot) and I notice the funny looks I get when people see me walking arm in arm with my girlfriend who just happens to be from a European background.

And I do realise that some of my friends from country areas (with an Aboriginal population) have a much harsher views on Aborigines than my friends who have lived all their lives in Melbourne (where there isn't such a large population).

Hence my observation in another thread about how the entire boat people/refugee video will get a different reaction in Victoria compared to Queensland.

However, from my experiences here and abroad, I think Australia is a less racist country than many other parts of the world. That is not to say that racism doesn't exist here. And I agree with you that it is particularly distasteful when political leaders use race issues to divide a nation for electoral purposes.

We need immigrants and refugees because at the moment this country is not doing enough procreating to ensure that the next generation of workers will be enough to sustain the public purse in about 20 years.

Good one, Howard. Of course, the terrorists are going to be in overcrowded boats and send weeks at sea. Get real, they are more likely to be first class passengers in airplanes. Who is the biggest scaremongering politican? Little Johnny thats who! Pauline H. I hope you have been taking note of the little scumbag.

So you are telling me that my grandfather who came to Australia from Ireland with his parents and brothers and sisters in 1934 is not really an Australian?

He is now 83 years old, he has lived here for 67 years, but because he wasn't born here he isn't Australian?

He has Australian citizenship, he votes, he worked here from the age of 16 and payed taxes. But according to your theory he isn't Australian?

I wonder what colour the sky is your world, Easty? Because I am convinced you are not on the same planet as the rest of us!

You should be voting one nation you rascist redneck

My ancestors fought for my original country (England) who are great allies of Australia yet according to you anyone who was born in England or whose parents were or whose grandparents were but now live here are not real Australians.

You have an arrogance which is breathtaking despite your obviously limited intelligence.

I suppose people such as Victor Chang were not real Australians.

I bet you support Tatiana though you moron.

No wonder mate, if your girlfriend is a different colour she's obviously not your sister, so why are you arm in arm with her in tassie ?

Oh ok and where exactly did your ancestors descend from i mean none of our ancestors are australian unless of course your of aboriginal descent.

Your racist filth comments have nothing to do with being proud to be an aussie, im prouder to be an aussie more than you because i can remember a time when australians did care for one another and were not filled with a racist hatred that exists today.

Im proud that as an australian i care about the welfare of all refugees, i care about my fellow human beings who were not as fortunate as myself, oh yes how lucky we are to have been born in australia.

I care about familes being murdered and tortured in wars, i care about children growing up in poverty and sickness.

And i dont care much for idiots like yourself who revel in the misfortunes of others and then you back it up by saying your proud to be an australian.

Grow up you fool we are all a part of this world, like it or not we all have a moral responsibility to care for each other and more so for the poor wretches who were not blessed to have been born here in australia....go away you fool your a stinking blot on all of us caring aussies.
