I think he will be in our best 22 next year with the retirement of a couple of players such as Bowden and Johnson. Talented player but will not suffer from one more year on the fringe and in the gym.

He has been in our best 22 for 2 years, but does he deserve to be? Not at this point IMO. I think Terry has decided that with Edwards, experience is the best way to learn rather than training. I think he needs 5kgs more at least, and a few 20+ possession games at coburg. Last year he was somewhat of a liability.

That being said, I think he has the tools to become a major part of our midfield rotation.

Dream Team, Supercaoch question no doubt?
Wallace loves him and will play every game if he is fit.
yes, he is in our best 22. Won the game for us against Hawthorn late last year when he had to go to half back.

:)BEST 22 in a canter!!!!
Most likely somewhere between 10 and 15, with plenty of upside ... plenty!!! This kid is only going to keep getting better and better, as long as the body holds up! A few extra kgs wouldn't go astray!

He is not best 22 in a canter from my opinion

my starting definates are:

Moore, Thursty, Newman
Raines, McGuane, McMahon
Cousins, Tuck, Richo
Brown, Riewoldt,
Morton,

Foll: Simmonds, Deledio, Foley
Inter:Graham, Bowden, Jackson(best tagger atm)

Which leaves a spot at full forward - Hughes/Shulz
And a half forward and forward pocket spot
And an interchange spot

3 spots at the beginning of the season which will be out of Edwards, Polo, Tambling, Thomson

Tambling is a better half forward
Thomson the better inside mid
Edwards the better small utility
Polo better defensive half back/mid

So for me he scrapes in in a forward pocket and Polo misses

So ........ he's in our best 22 then?

Yes in my opinion he is in the best 22 but the point was he is not in in a canter. There will be a little more pressure on spots this year if we have a good run with injuries. Edwards is a good player but he doesn't do one thing exceptionally in my opinion. He does a few things adequately. He is a good half back flank, a decent midfielder and an ok small forward. As a half back he needs to use the ball a little better as a mid he needs to find more of it and as a small forward/half forward he needs to have a more regular impact.

Don't get me wrong i really rate him. Have been down to training a few times over the preseason and loved his work ethic. Also was at the intra club and thought he starred from half back. Still TW has made it clear that he loves McMahon and Edwards isn't going to take Newman's spot and Raines was excellent over the preseason so he just isn't going to play any consistent football there unless there is an injury or a severe form slump.

No room for 2008's Most Improved Player Matty White???

I would say our best 22 for Round 1 would be as follows;

Moore, Thursty, Newman
Raines, McGuane, McMahon
Cousins, Tuck, Richo <---------- (Gee that looks sexy! :D)
Tambling, Riewoldt, White
Morton, Schulz, Brown

Foll: Simmonds, Deledio, Foley
Inter: Graham, Bowden, Jackson(best tagger atm) EXTRA PLAYER

Leaving only the one extra player spot to be fought out between Edwards, Polo and Thomson.

Not to mention that this will only be for around the first 5-6 rounds until the likes of Cotchin and Johnson and possibly Coughlan come into the equation.

IMO, he is still a fringe player at best who when we have a fully fit side is not at the top of the reserve pecking order. And if Nahas gets promoted, his angle as a small forward is again up against competition. If he bulks up and as someone before me mentioned, strings together a few 20+ possession games at Coburg, then he may be able to take the step to cement a spot in our 22 next season with a few retirements.

If this is from a SC point of view, I dont see him scoring massively when he does get his opportunities, of which may be few and far between later in the season. Better options for his price

Oh. Sorry Biggy, that opening sentence in your original post could have been read two ways, and I went with the wrong interpretation.

Totally agree with the rest of your sentiments.

And Bada Bing re Matty White: from this pre-season I've suddenly got real doubts over White, his thought processes, decision making and skills execution. I reckon Edwards is all over him and vying for the same spot.

I always have a soft spot for the skinny players (prob because I'm one myself) e.g. Edwards, Thursfield

Edwards is brimming with talent and confidence, he's more than happy to take the game on - remember the Adelaide game (was that 1 or 2 years ago?), and once he bulks up a bit he should be able to win more contested ball.

Best of luck this year Shane :thumbsu:

That was his debut match Colonel! I watched that game from a hotel room in Port Douglas, rang my brother and said 'We've got a player'. Obviously I'm a fan. My bro now refers to Edwards as 'your boy'.
I also said 'in two years time we'll be a good side', so this year will see if I was right. I reckon it was a good call made in the middle of a spoon year.
