I thought he played very well indeed. Would be absolutely robbed to be dropped on that performance, but it does seem like promoted 'emergancies' can get dropped regardless of their form.

Contributed 2 goals got 20+ touches, 8 rebounds, coverd the ground ok, didn't concede any goals, what more do you want?

Suspect some on here marked his cards early and are dissapointed they may be proven wrong.

Hope he retains his spot.

Spot-on Joe! Still needs to do a lot more (i.e. more games like last Saturday's) but he has that bit of class about him that too many of our 'honest tryers' lack.

IMO the only way we trade him is if he ends up part of a deal too good to resist. Unlike most others laughingly talked up as trade bait on this board, this bloke does have value.

It's well worth giving him another game against the dockers. The benefits are two-fold - we get to further assess his abilities and boost his trade value if we decide to go that way.

That is, of course, unless he plays an absolute shocker and his value to us and others tumble. You would suspect however that he would be keen to put in a good one on home soil.

I think Cox shows the most room for improvement but his attitude at training apparently could improve.

How do you know anything about his attitude? Unless you're in the inner sanctum you'd have no idea. Unless you really are Douggie BarwicK?

If they werent happy with his attitude he would not be selected. Personally I thought he played quite well. He has height and mobility that can be very useful.

I thought he played a very good game, but what I am saying is what he showed is what we all saw in him last year and early this year, his got great skills good in traffic and is a real one touch player. For a mid that's fine but for a defender you need to at least be a little bit accountable and need to have some ability to defend one on one when need be. He wasn't asked to do this on the weekend and hence he was good, he may lift in this aspect all I am saying is we didn't see anything to say that has improved.

If what he did this weekend was good enough to hold a spot he would have played a lot more this year.

He is a wild card player for mine. Has great attributes & could be something special if he applies himself. Hoping he steps up, but there is a lingering doubt about him. Give him an oppurtunity & see if he takes it. Great start on Saturday.

Don't understand. The point is that his game on Saturday was his best yet in the Ones. Based on that, many of us believe he definitely deserves another crack at it next Friday.

I 100% agree he deserves another game and that he is a talanted player. What I was saying was more along the lines of we all knew he was talented but what he did on saturday was what we all saw in him, and didn't show any improvement in what was keeping him out of the side, that is not his fault. Just that I don't think him playing well in that game has shown anything that we haven't seen but yes he was good enough to retain his spot, and with Toov's out I'd be tempted to leave Shannon in the side till Heath is recalled.

Should we be at all concerned that Cox was one of three players who failed to lay an effective tackle on the weekend? For reference, the other two were Davis and Clarke.

I suspect that long term the plan is to play Cox on a wing, which would presumably solve everybody's questions as it will allow him to use his skills, height and run offensively, and not be burned too badly by his opponent the other way.

Although for most of the past 2 years he has played in defence, this appears to be the same tactic that was applied (somewhat unsuccessfully) to Egan, to develop a defensive side to his game.

I also believe he is rated higher by the club than many might think, but has spent the year in the 2's due to coming back to pre season training in such poor condition.

If he gets himself together mentally and stays fit, watch out for a big 2009 from the ultimate late bloomer.

seeing as davis was a half forward midfileder and clarke was mid wingmen its disappointing but understandable (also didnt davis get a holding the ball free?)

Cox is a backmen and thats worrying

Maybe, but Sydney hardly touched the ball for the first 20 minutes or so and maybe that set the tone for the remainder of the night.

Indicative of that might be the fact that Davis also didn't lay a tackle. I haven't checked the stats but I'm pretty sure he's right up there in the tackle count list. Also, it's one area of his game he's really improved over the past couple of years, so, perhaps Cox (and others who might be a bit tackle-shy) might benefit from whatever remedial program they've had him on.

I agree that the wing would be the ideal position for him. I am unsure on whether he will ever have the fitness for it. He doesn't appear to be a guy who is super fit at the best of time and also appears to be a guy who will be prone to let himself go, in many ways he just doesnt appear to be a guy giving it everything he has.

Agreed that wing is his spot, but he obviously needs to improve his fitness to play it properly. Turning up for pre-season overweight is not a good start. We all know Cox can play, but he's got to reassess his commitment levels to cut it.

Reading MM's members e-mail, it seems Cox is a certainty this week. Spoke of running him through the middle against Fremantle.

I think there has been a few of us that have wanted to see him through the middle for a while. It will make for interesting viewing.

Judging by the article Torpy just posted and TRS's previous comments, it was his fitness that has held him back.

This may be his chance. Play a solid game through the middle and back it up in finals and he may be worth keeping.

Cheers for posting that article, sounds like quite a mature outlook from Cox, hopefully he has a really good game in the last H & A for the season.
