why are you guys saying all the best, have you been smoking something
are you going to get any joy if hawks beat port in the 2010 grand final and burgoyne wins the norm smith?
history will show one year he wanted to be captain the next year he walked out
he didnt mind playing during the good times but when the going got tough he walked out just when it was his time to show actual leadership
trying to save face by stating i hoped the club was well compensated is rubbish
blaming his brother if that is what is being alleged in other posts is rubbish as he is gone too
saying that the infighting after the 2007 loss is also rubbish
you walked out mate when you could have left your own mark
dont expect a pat on the back from anyone
choco
put thomas on him next year and see how he goes

Why not? Players move, it happens. It's how they move that counts, and JB did nothing wrong IMO.
He played plenty of good games for us, none for important than the 2004 final against the Saints.

As Powerstuff said, it's how you leave that counts. I was majorly annoyed at Nick Stevens after he screwed us, but when Josh Carr left I wished him all the best because of the difference in the way they went about it (and obviously he didn't burn any bridges because he's back in a Port jumper now). Shaun is somewhere in between IMO, he'll probably get a few boos the first couple of times he comes back to AAMI but I think he'll be forgiven pretty quickly. I'd love to see what would happen if Kane tagged him though considering all of the rumours of infighting.

If Shaun came out at the start and said some of the things he mentioned in his press conference, eg wanted port to get a fair deal, wanted to move for my family, I would have respected that. The way he said nothing, wouldn't answer his phone and let his management leek out little bits of info so the sunday mail could write a "woman's day" article about the whole saga, means I have very little respect for him

I don't agree with much of the phone thing here. I would imagine he would have had all sorts of media, football clubs and randoms calling him to talk/ chat/ interview him. That must have been hell for him to deal with and I fully understand why he would not answer his phone. Anyone who thinks otherwise would have to be only a bit selfish and unthoughtful for the guy.

You only have to look at the way Josh Gibson left North to know that Junior was very professional in the way he left. He also left for the RIGHT reasons and not for money or any of the other rumours going around. You guys lost a great player and I really hope you pick up a real gun in the draft and make it back up.

I agree with this post.

Compensation can only go so far - this whole thing shows that Shaun lacks heart.

agreed 100 per cent.

Yeah I dont wish ill of Shaun but I certainly dont wish him "all the best'.

He has deserted our great club in its hour of need for selfish reasons.

For this reason I have lost a lot of respect for Shaun and I would be quite happy to see him play out an uneventful, unsuccessful career ala Nick Stevens.

Don't care anymore. Fairly neutral exit which saw us well compensated, dissapointed to see him go, but meh. I will be interested to see how he will go in the strong Hawks midfield as I think he can destroy oppositions when he has adequate protection and more players around him who also must be tagged (ie. downhill skier). So not particularly fussed, had we not recieved the two first round draft picks I may be feeling alot differently.

I don't know if we will ever know all the reasons behind Shaun's departure, but I don't see the point in being angry at him and holding a grudge. It happens a fair bit, players changing clubs, and some players just need this to motivate themselves, improve and keep going. Face it, it happens all the time at normal workplaces - people aren't happy for one reason or another and they move on.

I believe we got the best of SB, especially now he has this recurring knee problem. Although we didn't get a key Hawks player in return, I think we still did well and set ourselves up for the future with the early draft picks we got. And really thats where we should be concentrating now, with the future looking good with Boak, Hartlett, Broadbent, Gray, Carlile etc. If we can add to that we will be looking good.

Life's too short to be angry at people like Shaun. I certainly won't be cheering when he plays us, but he was good for us through some good and bad times, and I wish him well for the future.

Who cares? As long as I don't have to hear this "best player" horseshit anymore. It's ridiculous.

If he was our "best player" he might've achieved a bit more than one very good year, one good year and a few solid years.

He actually embodies everything wrong with the club.

Hasn't put nearly enough runs on the board, when the tough gets going he doesn't and yet Chocolate ordained him as worthy of the captaincy and labelled him "our best player" (long before he needed to be talked up in the Trading Post)?

It's an insult to the likes of Tredrea and Cassisi who have either been genuine guntoting superstars for this club in the former's case specifically, or extract every ounce of effort and guts for their teammates, club and supporters every time they cross the white line.

This is probably the third or fourth time I've got on this horse, but shit, it's laughable how much credit Shaun Burgoyne gets for doing so very very little.

Yes I let all that stuff go by (except in one thread where I said he was no favourite of mine) as it can seem so lame to lay into a player when he leaves. But everything you say is right, he epitomised our current woes.

Who's Shaun Burgoyne? Is that that Hawthorn player? Why are we creating more threads and discussing him on here still.

**** him
he is no different to any other player who doesnt play for Port

I am disappointed in shaun .. (but i tell myself at lest we got 2 draft picks for him)

with those 2 draft picks i hope we pick from Tapscott, Butcher (if he falls) Talia or Vardy (if we get 2 or maybe 3 of these player i will be over the moon)

i dont know what we will do if we have Tapscott, Butcher or Talia at pick 8 and 9 (having 3 choices and 2 picks is so hard to choose i guess it depends on if Butcher falls to our number)
maybe tapscott with pick 8 and Talia with pick 9 ..
if Butcher falls the Butcher with pick 8 and Talia with pick 9

Butcher could replace Tredders
Talia could replace Chad
Tapscott could replace Burgs (i didnt say which burgs as i'm not sure
which)
Vardy could replace Lade

one of the above (Tapscott, Butcher or Talia) wont fall to pick 16 ... but Vardy should be there so we should pick him then (if he is gone then pick Fitzpatrick)

i am liking our young ruck division of Lobbe, Redden, D. Stewart atm and if we pick Vardy or Fitzpatrick it would be almost like Primus, Lade, French, Brogan like

Well put , my sentiments exactly .Also , if players think that by going to Hawthorn [ Burgoyne ] and St Kilda [ Lovett ] that a flag is assured I think they have taken a huge gamble . Nothing is definite in the AFL these days and while the forementioned sides are good , Geelong is still the benchmark with the Bulldogs, Collingwood and the Camrys around the mark as well . I also think that Shaun was overrated by Choco this year or rather the effect he would have after returning from injury . I suspect there was a feeling of " when Shaun returns we'll be allright " at the club and it did not happen . I can't wait until next season .

Meh, will be hated by myself as any other good opposition player when we play the Hawks, but other than that he can do as well as he pleases.

Remember people, without Shaun Burgoyne we simply would not have played in the 04 grand final. His smother on Guerra in the goal square was the difference between winning and losing on that night.

For that act on its own we should all be eternally grateful for the service he provided the Port Adelaide footy club.

How quickly people have forgotten Roger James.

As others have posted, Shaun's attitude and the pedestal on which Choco place him epitomises what has been wrong with our club since 2004.

Definitely haven't forgotten him. Take more than one to get into a granny.

Shaun is a Port Adelaide premiership player and therefore deserves our respect.

Perhaps. Should be glad that both he and the club get a fresh start then?

Personally we should be concentrating on improving Port Adelaide as a Football Club, not worrying about directing vitriol or negative energy towards opposition players - unless it's Brett Burton. That's always healthy.
