He's also not the worst kick at the club.
Hmmm. He definitely makes the shortlist. Who would you say is the worst kick at the club?
But the Hampson scenario is a good case study for recruiting pure athletes or players from other sports. AFL clubs are most happy to do this for ruckmen – see Pike, Blicavs, Brogan, Tippet. They consider it a safe option because:
1. People of that size and athleticism are simply rare – so sometimes they have to look outside the conventional drafting pool.
2. Ruckmen normally have only small influence on games so a project player does not risk much
3. Ruckmen are not expected to have good ball skills. They usually handball to a better kick
The problem starts when we expect them to do more. In Carlton’s case it was amplified because with Waite injured, Hampson was often the only tall forward target.
Hampson’s size and athleticism are simply the baseline characteristics of a modern day ruck. On the other hand, he has none of the qualities that make a key forward.
He does not judge the ball in flight
Poor hands
No idea of leading/running patterns
Poor kick
Hampson can jump high and is a good athlete – i.e. he makes a good second-string ruck. To expect more is laughable. Carlton has wasted too much time developing him
