He's also not the worst kick at the club.

Hmmm. He definitely makes the shortlist. Who would you say is the worst kick at the club?

But the Hampson scenario is a good case study for recruiting pure athletes or players from other sports. AFL clubs are most happy to do this for ruckmen – see Pike, Blicavs, Brogan, Tippet. They consider it a safe option because:

1. People of that size and athleticism are simply rare – so sometimes they have to look outside the conventional drafting pool.

2. Ruckmen normally have only small influence on games so a project player does not risk much

3. Ruckmen are not expected to have good ball skills. They usually handball to a better kick

The problem starts when we expect them to do more. In Carlton’s case it was amplified because with Waite injured, Hampson was often the only tall forward target.

Hampson’s size and athleticism are simply the baseline characteristics of a modern day ruck. On the other hand, he has none of the qualities that make a key forward.

He does not judge the ball in flight
Poor hands
No idea of leading/running patterns
Poor kick

Hampson can jump high and is a good athlete – i.e. he makes a good second-string ruck. To expect more is laughable. Carlton has wasted too much time developing him

Marc Murphy's bird > Megan Gale.

I can forgive Hammer for not pulling down any pack marks, but seeing him spill an uncontested mark on the lead is disgusting. His kicking and general decision making are poor also.

I think him and Rowe need to learn to work with each other. I saw a couple times yesterday where they spoiled each other and having them both constantly in the same packs just draws more defenders. I'd prefer Rowe coming out of the goal square and Hammer a bit further up using his athletic skills to bust a gut at CHF ala Nick Riewoldt.

Still think he offers up more up forward than Warnock but is much worse in the ruck. Wouldn't like to see him dropped. We have an easy month ahead, let him get some confidence up and see where we go. He has too many assets to give up on him.

I noticed that too-there was one in particular where Hampson was in front, with an Adelaide player behind him and then Rowe came over the back and top. No one marked that one.

I think that Rowe is more effective at bringing the ball to advantage when he fails to mark it than Hampson is, but if Hampson runs he is a faster lead.

After 7 years in the system I think we're entitled as supporters to see him put in better efforts than that yesterday.[/quote]

We have been saying the same thing about Simpson this season. Players form fluctuates but there are no tall forwards banging down the door - Hampson has had a few poor games but so has Rowe and Casboult barely got near the ball in the first 2 rounds

After a great game in round 1 that was let down my a couple of close misses, he's had his appendix out and come back and had a few poor games. Hamson is a confidence player, when he clunks a few and hits the goals (ala last year) he looks unstoppable. Unfortunately, drop a couple of marks, shank a few kicks and he loses all confidence.

In another team with the opportunity to play as a ruckman resting forward (his best position) he could really break out but with three quality first rucks he will continue to come in and out of the side based on injuries and form.

If Casboult shows some form in the 2's, he could come up - but his form in round 1 and 2 was worse than anything we've seen from Hammer this year. It must also be noted that our kicking into the forwardline was poor last night and neither Hampson or Rowe had any influence and I doubt Casboult would have been any better.

I agree with the concerns about his consistency, but were you really disappointed with Hampson in Round 1?

His marking was very good against the tigers, but the flip side was that his kicking was terrible.

Don't get me wrong I want Hammer to be a success (after all he does wear navy). Just not sure where we are headed with him is right. Perhaps the role might be made easier if Waite is fit.

Probably need to change the heading, it might seem like I am having a shot at him. I have no doubt the guy is trying (his tackling efforts yesterday show the endeavour) but when the ball hits the deck on what should be an easy mark, he has very little recovery. He also has the problem that his reading of play is off. Yesterday Curnow called him to where he was going to kick, put the ball down and hammer ran in the other direction. Kick went straight to Hampson's opponent and would go down as a clanger for Curnow.

Hammer needs to go back to the reserves for some match confidence. It makes me cringe when he constantly runs under the ball and drops easy marks etc.

I don't know where he is at honestly but the one thing i do know is that he needs to improve as his form has been stagnating for the last 2 years and he seems to be going no where.

You'd think one of the coaches would have picked it up by now. All he has to do is jump one step earlier - would be near impossible to spoil his marking attempt given his speed, size and leap. Same deal for his rucking.

We burned Hampson in the first quarter alone. Our delivery was nothing like that pass Jacobs marked at knee height.

Hampson's recovery to wrap after Sloane in a tackle after the tap was pretty good. Nick Riewoldt called Shaun an incredible athlete for his size.

Confidence is down, but he'll recover it.

Hampson is being murdered on this forum. Well I reckon the coaches get to watch Casboult/Mitchell and anyone else run around and compare and so far have stuck with Hampson - must be a reason for that. He has played a lot better than he showed yesterday - everyone can have a lousy day. he ws playing great footie last year - before his injury and was playing well before his appendix operation - I am happy to give him more time unless there is someone playing a lot better in VFL. Rowe is being under estimated - he set up two goals with a spoil and a win below his knees and a quick handball to a through runner.

Sorry I am not on the sack Hampson bandwaggon just yet.

This needs to be the key for him..When he does not mark or win the tap he needs to be more competitive. Endeavour was definitely there to tackle yesterday. What is concerning is inability to make consecutive leads to create space for himself.

I watched his running yesterday and it almost looked like he was leading once, stopping and waiting for the high ball to contest. Surely he is not being coached this way.

I hope he gets played in the seniors into form over the softer weeks.

Behind Kreuzer and Warnock.

Personally I would have Warnock/Kreuzer like a NicNat/Cox duo. Warnock rucking 60%, Kreuzer rotating through the ruck and on ball/bench rather than resting down forward. I hate to say it but none of our ruckmen will cut it as forwards.

Hampson showed so much early but he is an OK tap ruckman and that's it. Been in the system for a while and still cant stick marks or get a touch on a decent opponent.

Like all our tall forwards this year, he is just doing the bare minimum, bringing it to ground and taking the odd mark. Like all the tall forwards at the club, will be in trouble if someone who can mark and kick comes along.

Has the odd good game but has too many sub standard games. I think will be given a bit of a run then we will likely try another option. Just waiting form someone in our VFL team to stand up which no one is quite doing yet.

The thing probably keeping hampson in the team is he is a better Fwd option compared to Warnock. Hence why Warnock doesnt play as often as he does. If kreuzer develops more as a key fwd, id see Warnock having a better chance at more games as his in-effectual fwd work is minimized.

If Hampson does have trade currency I would pull the trigger. If there isnt a good trade we are better off keeping him and developing him and having the extra depth. I think he could do a Maric at another club (maybe not close to AA but have a big year) if he is allowed to ruck all game and claim the position.

he's a valuable member of our team and shouldnt be traded unless an offer that is too good to refuse comes along (in that case all players are expendable if an offer too good to be true comes along)

Yeh Hammer shouldnt worry about anything except good leads, strong marks and straight kicks. It would probs be better for the bloke to spend a few wks focusing on the basics in the 2's

maybe he can be joined by the mids and half forwards so they can learn to kick to a forwards advantage so he can have a realistic chance of marking the ball. Our delivery inside 50 would challenge any big forward. Our goals arent coming from marks inside 50, they are coming from free kicks and run on plays.

why dont players lead from pocket to goal square rather than goal square to pocket?
Easier to zone off the pocket than the centre where the player could go either left or right. Leading from the pocket only gives them 2 options, come forward = longer kick on more of an angle, or back towards the centre....where the defender is keenly waiting to make the contest.
