With all the talk about Adelaide showing a lot of interest in both Jacobs and Walker, I'm just wondering whether we might want Shaun McKernan as part of a deal.

I remember McKernan being rated quite highly before being taken in the 08 draft. He was taken at pick 28 but the consensus was that he slipped a fairway and could have easily gone in the 8 - 20 range.

At 196cm and 98kg he is a very attractive size to play as that bigbodied KP we've been crying out for at CHB - thus offering the likes of Jameson, Bower and Austin/White adequate support and freeing up Waitey to stay in the forward line on a permanent basis. I guess depending on team balance he could also be played in the forward line - I think he played a lot of footy there as a junior.

Does anyone know anything about Shaun that is the reason he has only played 1 game in the 2 seasons at the Crows? It's clear that guys the same age like Davis and Walker (who the Crows certainly won't put up for trade anyway) are a fair way ahead of him from an outsider's perspective but maybe they see McKernan as more of a development player and have some grand plan for him.

He's a Vic boy too and probably not happy with the opportunities he's had thus far - I think the club should seriously explore this option.

Shaun is expected to play alot next year according to Rendell. Neil Craig also had a interview a few weeks ago and was very excited at the prospet of McKernan rucking next year. I see him in the Paddy Ryder style ruck and this is why I don't think we will push too hard for Jacobs. I think Jacobs will end up at Port to be honest.

Adelaide seem to develop their talls for at least a year before they get any game time. Take Phil Davis as an example drafted pretty high in the 08 draft (12-13 IIRC) didn't play at all in 2009 but then got games in 2010 (Probably played more than expected due to all the retirements / poor results).

I never rated him at junior level. Looked slow and lumbering for KPP, and not tall enough for a ruckman. Especially too slow for a defender. Not sure what sort of player he is like at the moment as I don't watch SANFL.

All I can say is that Matthew Rendell (our recruiting manager) rates him as his best ever pick and an absolute star in the making.

McKernan is a classic tall utility. For South Adelaide he has played in the ruck, as a key forward and a key defender and has shown glimpses of greatness in all of those positions. At 196cm he might be a bit short for a ruckman but he has enormous leap on him and is an exceptional contested mark.

The Crows rate him extremely highly and with the way the game is headed with the capped interchange, he is a great swinging tall to have in the team. Can play in the ruck, forward and back and as such provides with great flexibility and we can easily rotate Tippett and McKernan between ruck and forward line. Especially with the way the game is headed where a lot of teams are opting to go with one traditional ruckman and a tall utility that can play a number of positions.

McKernan is Neil Craig's type of player. Chances of him going anywhere?! Zilch!

wont be playing at Carlton unfortunately guys....

really sorry about that.

Yeah... and he is a pretty good player. Should look up some highlights of the South vs Eagles game for a glimpse of what's to come at AFL level. His best is amazing,... serious game dominating stuff... BUT... his consistency is still very lacking.

Forget all this nonsense about where our recruiting manager rates him.

He got one game in 2009 due to injuries, looked pretty out of his depth against Richmond, then broke his arm at training before he could get a second game, and rebroke it coming back to training too quickly.

At the start of the year he was touted to be a "22 game player" in 2010 by Rendell and I think Reid, but didn't set the world on fire in preseason games looking just as fumbly and out of his depth as he had before, and had a disappointing season in the SANFL playing ruck and forward for the dismal South Adelaide. A few good games here and there, but nothing in the way of consistency, and the only time he got near the Crows was as an emergency in the last few rounds when we were down to less than 30 fit players to pick a squad of 25 from.

Pretty sure the club sees him as being just like his brother, a ruckman and power forward. I can see the club agreeing to trade him if pushed, but I don't see them as willing to offer him up right off the bat.

Luckily, a club is much more patient than supporters and have a better idea of what players ability is. If our club listened to our supporters players lik Bock, Vince, Douglas et al would have been all delisted or traded a LONG time ago! ;)

I think you will fing that McKernan did well enough in his debut to earn a game next week in not for breaking his arm at training!

Also when Craig names someone as a player to watch for the following year you can guarantee that they will come good. Every time he has singled out someone in this manner at the end of the year has gone on to have a good year next year! The player he singled out this year was McKernan saying that in the last month he has seen McKernan do things he expects from him and with a good preseason is in for a good 2011. So in short, knowing how highly they rate the kid, there is buckleys chance he gets traded! Bookmark it!

could also mean they are pumping his value up to trade him.

I had never heard of him before, but since I have read this thread I want mckernan badddddddd!!! He's gonna be an AA captain brownlow medal superstar from what I have read. Omg mckernan <3

I dont want him at all, i know nothing about him at all but he is related to Corey and that scabby faced player was the most inconsistant and frustrating player ever who never lived up to what he should have, even polled more votes in the brownlow one year than anyone else but had been suspended, just couldnt hack watching another McKernan running or plodding his way around in a Carlton jumper again.

at the end of the day he would be a project to work on if say jacobs left.

For all the talk by crows supporters as to his potential at the club, well potential means nothing. look at all our players with "potential" austin, white, grigg and so on.

At the end of the day if the crows want walker or esp jacobs then they will have to offer something, and i cant say a player who never gets a game isnt that appealing.

Good to see it hasnt taken long for opposition teams to start expecting to offer nothing for players.

Now off to the crows board to demand tippett in a straight swap for jacobs....

He covers a lot of ground. Especially when he's taking a set shot for goal. I hope he doesn't think he's Dennis Lillee because I am Dennis Lillee. Call Call Carpet Call. The Experts In The Trade.

Thats hilarious . Mckernen is anything but slow. He would comfortably be one of the quickest KP sized players in the AFL. If anything his skills and consistency aren't great.

The qualities that can't be questioned are vertical leap (2nd only to NicNat in 2008), agility, speed and contested marking.

Yeah, as well as the vertical leap I think he tested 6th for agility at the draft camp.

Smack is going absolutely nowhere. There is no way we would be trading him as part of a Walker / Jacobs trade. He's being made to work hard for a spot in the side... but he's going to be a player.

come on guys... lets be realistic here... the way it works is... any player that is good or has potential to be good is off limits... so that leave us with one option for Walker and Jacobs combined and that is Sellar... cause you know... Adelaide are an awesome team and Sellar is 20th in line... but Carlton are fighting for a bottom 4 finish and so Sellar would be our number 1 player... considering that Carlton desparately wants to let go of Jacobs and Walker we have to take what we can get... we should be very greatful for Adelaide's charitable hearts...
