Who it takes away from is blokes like Foster, Ibbo and Drum who can't build up the experience necessary to perform at the top level.
Funny, I have the opposite point of view. If those young blokes aren't yet good enough to knock off a player who is apparently the most carp midfielder running around then perhaps they don't yet deserve a spot.

Aside from Foster, and to a limited degree Dunn, the blokes running around doing the damage at WAFL level are all senior players. Make the youngsters put their hand up and demand to be selected.

And don't try to foist Peake as an example of stepping up. he was in great WAFL form before he got selected. It was his disposal and his size that was in question.

Love Shauny Mac, but it's time to move on.

I agree with you entirely. If we are in the business of being charitable then I would sooner donate to the Salvos. McManus is a truly a Freo man through and through but there are so many other ways he could contribute to the team without being on the list. I'd like him to have a glorious standing ovation this weekend and ride off into the sunset on a golden unicorn.

I don't want to see him playing every week (I cringe every game), but if he's on the veteran's list not taking up a spot on the main list, with only half his (relatively small) salary counting to the cap, giving some fatherly advice to the young blokes, and available as a depth player - then I don't have a real problem with him staying on for another year. I'll be seriously upset if he lines up in Round 1 2008 though!

There is a massive difference between WAFL and AFL, they won't be able to improve for the AFL unless they are played in the AFL.

If we play Foster, Webster or Ibbotson in his place and they don't prevail, then we can easily axe them at the end of 2008, if we don't play them, McManus takes their place for another full year and we don't find out how good they are until 2009........ and 2008 is another void year of development in our most key position.

I don't think anyone would object to that. I just can't see it happening or Macca being happy being a depth player.

I would bet my left nut that if he is on the list he will line up in round 1.

He will only play in round 1 if the Coach thinks that he is in the top 22 available players at the club. Cant blame Macca for trying to prolong his career. Good luck to him if he can keep going.

But there is always external pressures in dropping someone who has been at your club for so long, although we did it with Parker halfway through the season.

Still, it is not easy telling your team veteran and fan favourite that he is going to start the season in the WAFL, in his last season with the club.

I am now hoping Sheedy comes over as a mentor or whatever position that was.

Parks is a great analogy. He played rounds 1,2,3,4,6,13,14 when He was not in the best 22 players on form IMO after playing every game in 2006.

Sheeds is well known to play the older blokes. Im not sure how Sheedy would help this situation.

You would think after playing guys like Bolton, Michael and Bradley (not so old, just a dud) got him the sack he may have learnt the error of his ways...
