Kevin Sheedy was today acknowledged as Essendon Football Club’s honorary 40,000th member during a special presentation in the Windy Hill Hall of Fame. Managing director, Peter Jackson, welcomed Sheedy’s return and praised the football mastermind for his outstanding contribution to the club and for his assistance in helping the club to reach the record milestone.
“It is the first time in the history of the Essendon Football Club that we have passed the 40,000 member milestone,” Jackson said.
“We are very excited and delighted about that and it says a lot about the support from our fans and the future of where the club is heading.
“This is something that has taken a lot of years of hard work and the foundations of this, we believe, has been built by this man, Kevin Sheedy.

"We at the club have done some extra things to help add the polish and help build it up but quite frankly the initiative and the work and the things that Kevin has done over his time at the Essendon Football Club is the reason we are here.

"He is the person that created Essendon as a national brand by taking the club around the country.

“In recognition of all of Kevin’s efforts, we would like to make him the honorary member in 2008 and I am hoping that this is an annual thing in perpetuity until the day he goes to the next world because that will mean that we will always have 40,000 members.”

In typical Sheedy form, he joked, "I have been living in the next world for a long time now."

Jackson presented Sheedy with a plaque containing the 40,000th Essendon membership ticket for 2008 on behalf of the club.

In July, Sheedy will also be formally inducted as a Legend of the Club.

“Today is a recognition of Kevin’s contribution and also to say that he will always be part of the Essendon Football Club,” Jackson said.
Sheedy, wearing his trademark grin, was humble when accepting recognition for his ongoing efforts and commitment to the club.
“It is a tremendous effort by the fans to get behind the club,” Sheedy said.

“When you look back, it was sort of like chasing the four-minute mile – it was just a matter of getting there.

“Obviously the next target will be 50,000 and we would love to get there ahead of Collingwood. That is achievable but to reach 40,000 is an absolutely historical milestone.
“Essendon is a unique club and to finally break this milestone is tremendous for the mighty Bombers. It is just another step in the wonderful world of footy.”

To me we are looking like the guy who dumped his girlfriend, realised that perhaps we shouldn't have done that, the girlfriend isn't interested anymore but we use any excuse possible to see them. Pathetic. Sorry for being so cynical, Sheedy deserves all the accolades in the world for what he did with our now great club but I personally I don't think this passes the smell test!

I disagree. You need to move on if you think Sheedy should still be coaching Essendon. Sheedy's moved on, so should you.

With regards to trying to achieve 50,000 members, why would 10,000 new members even consider joining when we play most home games at Docklands? Those 10,000 people shouldn't even consider signing up unless we move back to the MCG.

Couldn't agree more....

Telstra Dome is the shittest Venue for footy.

Its depressing how we have to sit in shit seats every game and put up with the lack of atmosphere from the crowd.

The MCG is by far the greatest sports venue in the WORLD!!!

You misrepresented my post, I'm happy with Knights' appointment, I was glad when Sheedy left and I'm still happy with the decision now. I was initially shocked with Knights appointment but came around within 24 hours. I was simply stating how I perceive Essendon to look in this situation.

Your right you are being cynical. This is nothing more than a great club formally acknowledging its greatest servant. If anything, questions should and would be asked if we didnt do something like this for Sheeds.

He's also being upgraded to "Legend" status of the Essendon Football Club, that is fair enough, but 40,000th ticketholder? Are we going to invite him down again for his birthday, christmas, easter??? I think the upgrade to legend status and that's it.

It to me looks like Sheedy doesn't want a bar of it, particularly when the same people who "sacked" him are the same people involved in giving him awards etc.

What is it that he has done that makes you think he looks like he doesn't want a bar of it?

Accepting it?

Defending Matty Knights in the press conference?

Taking the heat off Peter Jackson in the press conference and diverting the whole Horsburgh thing?

Just a feeling I get, I think he's still a little bitter over his sacking (non-renewal of his contract blah blah) besides the fact of why would you want to return to the workplace that gave you your marching orders. He's got his work with the AFL, he's a potential candidate for the Gold Coast gig (although everyone seems to think Voss) or the West Sydney one.... I think he's moved on and so should Essendon, sure give him an induction as a Legend at Essendon but also let him move on and let us move on!

Because Sheeds bleeds Red & Black, he barracked for the Bombers as a kid, before being drafted to the Tigers.
