Shin Splints

Ive got them at the moment, worst sporting injury ive ever had. Bad thing is the reason i got them is the only income i have at the moment, so im just running through the pain.

Rest.

and the best option:

As soon as you feel them coming on, rest! If you rest then, you will only be out for a week or two max. Get proper footwear and run on even soft surfaces.

If you wait until they're really bad, it can take months for them to fully heal.

The first few times I got them, i ran them into the ground and had to wait for ages. Now, as soon as I feel them coming on, I stop and rest up. In the long run, it saves me alot of weeks on the injury list :)

Lots of kids have them. Anybody got any special methods they use or know of to help get rid of them

Thanks in advance

go to chemist get orthopedics in your size put them in shoe.

Lose weight, dont drink alcohol and eat more fruit.

ALCOHOL is a big contributor

Stretch you calf muscles more actually a lot.

dont run on cement roads

dont tie your shoes too tight keep them nicely fitted and flexible

Take anti inflamatories when real bad

ALL THIS DOESNT WORK lookks like surgery needed. :(

Another one i've used with great effect, is to buy foam cups, fill them with water and let them freeze over night.

When they're ready use the same technique as the fella with the tennis ball used.

I used to go to an osteopath who did his training with a Victorian based AFL club.

He mentioned that shin splints were a huge problem in that club, especially in the off season.

He recommended me the foam cup treatment in order to manage the problem. It had awesome results for me. He also provided some osteo treatment on them which worked wonders as well.

The key is that once you have gotten rid of the problem, continue with the foam cup icing as part of your post activity program and you should never have the problem again.

It is certainly a common problem up here in Queensland where the grounds are generally harder in winter than the Victorian grounds I guess.

I disagree, it's a very good game, but i think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.

Hahaha, gold..

In response to the initial post..

I had them from pre-season last year until seasons end.. You best bet for beat them is

Go and see and osteopath - they work wonders... Well, a good one like mine did anyways

Get some deep heat/oil on them before training and games, get your club trainer to really give them a good rub and work out all the lumps as much as possible

Ice after each training session and game...

Also wise to apply some heat on your days off and work out the lumps with a golf ball or rolling pin..

These are the best ways to manage them... You should also invest in a good pair of boots with good cushioning, that will help. any long time time running or sprints shoudl be done in runners, not footy boots.

Greetings Viewers

As a teenager my younger brother endured shin splints. He was diagnosed as having compartment syndrome - a condition that sees the calf muscle grow at a rate which is not matched by the sheath surrounding the muscle. Atypically this results in reduced oxygen supply/ lack of removal of lactic acid.

He had day surgery - a small incision on the inside of the leg just above the ankle - where the sheath is cut - akin to letting your trousers out.

His recovery was very swift and permanent.

As stated earlier, get some professional advice.

Regards

Dicko

Have you been to a podiatrist?
I suffered from Shin Splints for years, then was referred to a podiatrist, who informed me I had flat feet, which caused my feet to roll in, and thus stretch the outer shin muscle. I had orthotics moulded, and now hae no pain in my shins what so ever. Highly recommended...if that is the problem

Good luck.

If it's a one-off thing, it's probably due to overtraining, and RICE + easing back into training (increasing volume gradually) will be sufficient.

If it's a recurring issue, you'll need to RICE and rehab i.e. strengthening/activation work for the hip extensors, abductors, anterior tibialis (shin muscle) + stretching and soft tissue work for the hip flexors, quads, adductors, gastrocnemius + improving ankle mobility + barefoot warm-ups, running + run on grass only - I made a more detailed post on bigfooty re: how I did it, a while back.

I got custom orthotics twice (I was young and my feet were growing), but it didn't fix the problem LT, doing proper rehab, like I described above did. If you can source one out, a good physio should be able to help you .

i used to get them when i was 15 and 16 i was playing 2 games footy wknd. i used to tape my ankles and keep tapping up past my ankles, it used to control the pain in a way... not something i recomend. but they are very painfull and annoying.

I used to get taped so that my foot wasnt able to even slightly hyperextend, as thats what my trainer thought may have been the problem, and it worked a treat.

From what I gather there are 2 different types of shin splints?

Rest rest rest rest Ice ice ice ice.

Shin splints are ____ed

so so true, had them for years and it ____ing hurts,

Best method i found if you still want to play on them is use finalgon cream,

Put on an hour before the game (dont use to much)
Wash hands with soap straight after (speaking from experience)
By game time it feels like your skin is burning off (it's not though)
Will keep on burning for a good 5 hours but cant feel the shin splints at all.

Get it from your local chemist for around 10 bucks and will last a couple years.

I struggled with them for years. I got it so bad, I couldn't walk, let alone jump and I'd be in agony like my legs were being stabbed by knives.

Long term, I invested in a pair of orthotics/insoles/arch/ankle supprts. A podiatrist correctly diagnosed my feet as the problem - arch pronation. The impact of running and jumping then puts pressure on the legs. Physio and leg weights also helped. Part of the problem was because of my feet, the right leg muscles weren't working as well as the wrong ones. Leg strength tends to help. A lot of players neglect their legs but work on their upper body. This is a bad idea and a sure way to get shin splints.

My tip would be while you've got them, whatever you do, don't continue to run. Ride a bike or swim to keep fit instead and do the leg physio until you're certain that they are fully healed. Ice them as much as possible. Tiger balm or deep heat is good for massaging out scar tissue. And don't skimp on runners or footy boots - a good shoe makes a big difference and blades as opposed to boots with stops seem to work better.

I've had shin splints on and off. Started in pre-season cricket. Continued till December. Started again in February and stopped after cricket season. And now after just doing some running yesterday i have shin splints again. So i'm doing some leg strengthening and stretching exercises. It helped me when i first had it. But then i stopped doing them, so yeah.

Theres no use even trying to go to training if you have them, it just ____s you up for the weekend.

No kidding... I've been plagued by shinnies on-and-off for several years.

When I'm playing footy/cricket/going for a job I have to tape my feet how the match physio's do. That usually works. But after the pre-season on the rock hard grounds the shinnies really flare up, I'm going to try that technique. Cheers. :thumbsu:

EDIT: I never realised rubbing the shinnies out was what you were meant to do, I thought that'd just make it worse. Bloody amature mistake.
Did you get the job?:D

Worthwhile getting a scan. Sometimes they are not splints but something potentially worse like Shermans Disease (often compared to lower back stress fractures) or Osgood-Schlatters (on the knee) . Both are particularly potent in kids/teenagers and can end up putting you in plaster for a period of time to completely immobilise the affected area.
