I was absolutely shocked reading that article, people in the media have really put themselves to shame in the last few years.

Having an opinion is good, but due diligence is better. As per previous threads we have drafted 2 players over 23 or so out of the last 29!!!!!

That's ~6%

It was clear last year we lacked mature bodies to protect our kids, Hill and Suban played too many games and now lost time to put on weight.

We have the cash, he's better than our other 'cloggers', we delisted Foster... am I crazy? If you are going to be opinionated - GET IT RIGHT. At least acknowledge these facts?

Friends of mine who know a bit about footy are the same as Hutchy, you try to explain but it feels like a waste of time.

On a more interesting note Lloyd said "he is excited about his new role", while everyone is saying he will be a HF / HB... maybe we have a different role in mind? Any thoughts?

I commend Harvey on what he did last year and is doing this year but the first year he took over he would have won alot more fans if he took an axe to the list and off loaded about 8-10 players we would have been in a much better position now.

No we would of been in a worse position.

If we had swung the axe we would of had to have taken an extra let's say 3 players.

Clubs started passing at 64, we used a pick at 69 for Kep.

The last 5 eligible players taken with late picks are Blake Grima (3 games), Kite (0), Connors (0), Tom McNamarra (3) Guy O'Keefe (0). The rookie draft is looking a little thin too.

Now I know we don't know who would of been taken but chances are we would of been lucky to find 1 player out of 4* who was even just an average player.

* based on 3 more picks and not taking Mark Johnson.

This means come 2008 we can not delist these guys so we have 4 spots taken.

Working backwards this means no room for - Walters and Ruffles who look better than any of the late picks in 07 to me already and of course we have - Hall or Bucovaz who are ?'s.

If you take it to the extreme and say no re-rookie listings so Mourish and Dunn are out this gives us 2 less picks this year (Broughton and Van Berlo) ..looking at the names taken by our sister club (who did have a lot of rookie space)- Lewis Stevenson, Arrowsmith, Will Sullivan, Callum Wilson & Beau Wilkes.

So at the end of the day for me Walters + Ruffles + Broughton + Van Berlo > a clear out in the first year.

Really though we've only replaced the Bells, Farmers, Carr's, etc.

If we were having a proper clean out Dodd, Murphy, Thornton, Grover and Solomon should have been de-listed this year but the fact that it's a shallow draft has complicated things.
we will probably cut 2 or 3 of those lads you have mentioned above,at the end of the 2010 season.so we will have a pick between 10 2 14 in 2010 plus another 2 picks inside the top 50.

I posted a rebuttal to Hutchison's article on the heraldsun website showing how wrong he was on each point he was trying to make.
I did start with how much of a clown he was & so obviously it was not accepted , at this stage .
Is also satisfying to see on the Essendon bigfooty site that they all have been scathing of his remarks.

I left this comment on the site

"You're an idiot. Don't you understand that we're getting him for nothing? And that we have also delisted/traded 6 players of similar age to McPhee this year. Plus another two slightly younger than him.
You also failed to note that we drafted 14 players last year and nearly all of them played straight away. We also expect to draft similar numbers this year. Not to mantion Palmer, Ibbotson and Mayne from the previous years.
Big mistake. I bet if you saw Stephen Hill out on the streets now you'd wet your pants.
You better hope he hasn't read this"

Hutchy is an insecure, fat, ugly little boy masquerading as an adult journalist. The editors and publishers that allow him to write are just as pathetic.

I don't think the other teams down the bottom through that same period in Melbourne and West Coast have taken any mature age players though??

We must have close to 20 players who have done 4 or more pre-seasons and close to a dozen guys the wrong side of 25 so it's not like our list is full of young blokes.

The likes of Suban, Broughton, Pearce and Bucovaz are physically mature anyway.

On a more interesting note Lloyd said "he is excited about his new role", while everyone is saying he will be a HF / HB... maybe we have a different role in mind? Any thoughts?

Talk out of Essendon seems to be that McPhee will play as a midfielder next season.

Look at the big trades this year Barry Hall was drafted to the Doggies - a huge risk they are rolling the dice in their premiership window, so it makes some sense but it also potentially sets them up for a big fall when their big stars retire.

Brisbane take Fev in a crazy deal which is by far the worst for some time.
He will be 29 come bouncedown, they lost a capable committed FF in Bradshaw, and paid heavily for him.

Even if you look at the Burgoyne deal that got done. The guy is 27 also coming back from a knee recon.

Melboure are considering using a high pick for Luke Ball. I wonder if that would be considered "an excellent move to help develop the young players".

We take an AA player who will still be 27 come end of season and pay nothing for him, and get the most shite article of all time written about it.

And WTF is up with that title? Surely he was completely pissed when he wrote it chuckling to himself at how clever he is.

Unbelieveable.

The responses in this tread alone show that the article has served its purpose.

I doubt even Hutchy believes half the crap that he writes, but this article was no doubt geared towards getting a reaction. The more it is discussed the more exposure it gets.

Do you think Melbourne will cop the same type of criticism?

Ball is probably a better player than MPhee, but we're getting him for free and Melbourne are going to give up a top 20 draft pick for him.

Melbourne football media are absolutely ridiculous. They should keep to what they know and write about their own clubs. We're heading in the right direction and I think most people in WA and most Freo supporters know that.
