Should a suspension rule a player ineligible for the Rising Star award?

If it’s Harley Reid then yes , and throw in 2 extra weeks for dissent education and umpire appreciation
Are you still offended after he tore your side a new one ?
FWIW I'm in the camp of his tackle should be a suspension and he would be ineligible.
Should be one week though because wilson wasn't concussed .

I don’t think I’ve seen such a deliberate body slam as Reid’s - the kid was angry that’s understandable…but there was no flop’ from Wilson.

Reid’s had to be a suspension - but I’d agree to removing the ‘fairest’ criteria from both TRS and Brownlow - Williams, Voss, Dipper, Judd, Ruscuitto, Libber, etc have a,ready made it a mockery

im not offended in the least and I’m trying to leave the team coloured goggles out of the equation

The Derby loss was categorically f*d

But the fact is Freo are 6th on the ladder and West Coast aren’t

They other fact is Freo aren’t hanging their entire clubs hopes on one kid , they have a whole team of brilliant kids with bright futures

Further to this anyone who doesn’t wear blue and gold coloured glasses is saying Reid has got an attitude problem and needs to pull his head in

And I agree it was probably 2 weeks but could reasonably get appealed to 1 but no less

It should only be 1 week . High impact? He wasn't even concussed . I thought you needed a concussion to get high impact from a tackle .

The only reason Reid would need to pull his head in is if his attitude starts causing problems .

Its like saying ballantine needed to pull his head in . Its only a problem if he isn't in your team .

Also you are always going to have more up and coming players. We are rebuilding after our last premiership. You guys started rebuilding after 2016 8 drafts ago

Just reckon you lot and the media should stop idolising the kid
It’s weird and unhealthy

Hayden Young is in the same league as Reid but you don’t hear a peep about him

Better for him so he can just focus on his footy

I must have missed Harley Reid's drug conviction 🤷‍♂️
🤣🤣

I actually only used that analogy because I watched that movie Blow last night and the main character was a very good drug smuggler

Nothing to do with drugs and Reid

However
The way the Perth media and WC supporters are pumping up his celebrity status and idolising him it’s a potential threat

I saw first hand what happened to that young group of Eagles around 2006 and it was bad

I 100% agree that the media need to cut their shit out about him so much .

Simpson has already asked the media to stop especially the 'West' and that Muppet editor of theirs who is actually a freo supporter.

On our board their is a huge discussion about the media around him and how its unfair on the kid getting so much publicity.

He doesn't go out of his way to do publicity its just following him .

Also you can't ask fans to stop idolising him the kid is a star .

In 9 games he has already had perfect 10 coaches votes , rising star nominated, Mark of the week , goal if the week .

Has hayden young done that yet ?

He’s bloody good no doubt but any form of idolatry is unhealthy

To be honest the votes thing isn’t a fair comparison

Young is competing against Serong , Brayshaw , Ryan , Pearce etc who are all in peak form

Reid is competing against no one of note other than Waterman who is having a blinder of a year

Yeo , Kelly, McGovern ?

I reckon Harley Reid is now eligible and would be front runner for the Suplex of the Year award.

Stupid logic.

Go listen to the media discussing it. Cory McKernan missed out because the AFL rules at the time gave tripping a week off. A year later they changed their minds and made a 50m penalty.

A split second decision during a game is nothing like premeditated drug dealing. Rules change every year, then they are reversed because AFL House got it wrong (again). Plenty of players have won awards in the past who have done much worse and deliberately. Patrick Cripps won a Brownlow after a dog act that should have got weeks as dangerous play. Maynard ended a players career but was let off because it was a prelim and the AFL didn't have the stomach to charge him with rough conduct and weaseled their way out of upsetting Eddie and 100,000 Pies supporters.

The balanced view has been posted by neutrals. Split the MRP decisions into deliberate or careless with the latest list of soft suspensions being defined as careless and you remain eligible for awards. Common sense.

One thing for sure the betting companies will love this. Favorites for awards with big dollars placed on them get rubbed out by pretty soft suspensions. Laughing all the way to the bank. Betting on awards these days won't be worth it until the season is done. I don't bet BTW but plenty do.
What's special about careless vs deliberate? I mean, there's already a distinction - guilty but no suspension means you are eligible, guilty with a suspension means ineligible. Why shift the goalposts now?

It's been a best and fairest award for 30 years, there are ineligible players almost every year and nobody bats an eyelid.

Honestly reckon most of the controversy is from people who don't understand how these things work yet still feel like complaining.

Seems like a fair few "expert commentators" also agree. The way the AFL has increased sanctions on split second clumsy bumps and tackles with no malice intended future awards wont actually mean much.

Players who dont bother to tackle or go in hard at all will win them all.

Super. Just a fantastic result all round.

Had to laugh at Richo arguing he should be eligible as it was a football act.

So the only way Reid would be ineligible is if he drove a car onto the field and ran over a player.

Striking is not a football act.

Biting. Eye gouging. Head butting. Elbowing. Squirrel gripping. Chicken wing tackles. Stomping. Etc etc. Not a footbal act.

Duh!

I saw something much more recent.

"Among the shock details to emerge on Wednesday was an allegation Balic witnessed footballers using drugs when he joined the Dockers as a teenager."

Not going down that rabbit hole

Harley got 2 weeks and that’s that
As far as the rules on eligibility for the Rising star , tough tittiez , that’s how the cookie crumbles

Not going down that rabbit hole? You opened the door because you watched a movie and seemed happy to bring up the eagles history.

not so keen when the shoe is on the other foot though?

I don't mind the ineligibility after supension for Rising Staror Brownlow. But I do mind players getting suspended for tackles. Should be reserved for striking and fighting, not stuff that just happens while doing regular game moves like bumps or tackles where you can't control or predict the oppossing players exact movement.

it was careless and especially in the current climate, harley should have shown more care. I wont be surprised to see it knocked down to 1 week on appeal though.

I dont care about the ineligibility for being rubbed out, in 10 years, no one apart from a few nuffs on bigfooty are going to remember that reid and darcy were ineligible or didnt win the rising star. they will have the careers they have. No one deducts points from Dusty because he didnt win the rising star.

i wouldnt be surprised to see the afl amend the eligibility criteria in the off-season though.

He left the ground for assessment. Just like Maynard did from Darcy. Both got 2 weeks. Both could be one week, but 2 weeks is hardly outrageous based on what has been handed out this year.

One week is for when it does no damage at all, but could.

You know there are other awards, right? He'll still win the AFLCA Best Young Player Award and the AFLPA Best First Year Player Award.

The Rising Star is just one award of many - nobody is forcing you to think it's important.

Like I said , not going there
It had nothing to do with drugs , was an anology on crime vs punishment.

The comparison to 2006 Eagles was about idolatry and what it can do to young people

This is boring so I’ll finish it for you with the inevitable WC response.
WC have 4 cups Freo have none

There , does that make you feel better ?

I really dont care that much because there are other awards sure.

And its not all about Harley. It is just another annoying outcome from poor management of the game.

The game has changed. AFL House makes so many errors they compound and the game is worse off for it. This is just another example.

Non fussed who honestly really cares aside from blokes that brainlessly bet on these type of awards? My personal belief if they should make players eligible aside from players charged where the offence is more than 1 week. Means a very carless bump and you are still eligible but no Reid/Darcy wouldn't as they triggered a 2 match ban. Increase the threshold but not by so much you have half the players on 2+ match bans.

What is stupid bycalling it high impact is that both players were cleared of injury and returned to the field and played out the game.

That isnt the same as if a player was seriously injured, stretchered off the ground not to return.

So how does the system punish a legitimatly higher impact that results in a much worse injury?
