Should all player contracts be made public?

I don't buy into providing names of players along with their salaries, but a breakdown if the cap as suggested here along with a breakdown of footy department and other spending is reasonable.
I would find this more than acceptable as a trade-off between privacy and accountibility

Officials of public companies and government officials are responsible to the general public.
It’s only right that we know what they earn.
And what of private companies listed on the stock exchange? The reason it is done for all three examples is for transparency and accountability.
I don’t see how this is relevant to footballers.
Because executive-sized wages are a material concern of the organisation and as such should be subject to the scrutiny of the members. Because right now the AFL can literally permit or directly pay players outside the cap with absolutely no scrutiny (Goodes, Jack, Essendon players, and who knows who else...). The AFL can also hand out compensation draft picks based on these secret contract terms and so again, no scrutiny is possible without the contract terms being made public. I don't know about you but I am not happy that Hawthorn lost a grand final to Sydney in 2012 while they were paying as 1-2 million over the cap to players. Ans I'm not happy that Geelong was given a compensation pick for Motlop to make it easy for Gary Ablett to get to Geelong. This doesn't stop until far better transparency measures are introduced.

How is it an equalisation method if the NFL has a salary cap, which I’m pretty sure the NFL does?

Take the Dylan Shiel situation.

Gone will be the days of third party deals and media innuendo that some has “taken unders” for a certain team.

Yes, it’ll be disappointing as a player to see being paid X less than another player - but what is that going to force you to do?

Leave.

100% yes, that way the game becomes transparent, no rorting of compo picks and clarity on everyone's salary cap figures. At the end of the day it's the members and viewers that make the players get paid what they do today, without the fans the sport generates next to no money and it would just be like a high level local league with the players on peanuts.

What, so if YOU don't know they're getting, they could be rorting, but if YOU know what's happening, then rorting will stop???

Just quietly, I think you might be overestimating your own sphere of influence.

The people who actually have a say in stopping rorting know the key figures...and those who rort risk a lot.

That's true we will never be able to keep track of 3rd party payments, but either way I think the salaries should be common knowledge.

I’m not sure if there is a thread on this topic, and if there is my apologies.

This is probably the first time in years I’ve been interested in the off season trade period. It has always been mania and ridiculous speculation which has kept me off social media and forums, however I’m finding the climb back to the top as exciting as the euphoria of the triple.

Re player payments being made public would surely remove all speculation.

Should players enjoy anonymity? What do they have to hide? The payg withholding tax is always remitted by the clubs, so they can’t possibly do anything foolish. They are just players who are involved in the largest sporting industry in the land. Wouldn’t it be great to know what they take home after tax each season?

The argument that the scrutiny is too much I find ridiculous. Just like those who wish to become actors or be involved in a public capacity, the scrutiny comes with the territory. The majority of sports people need to be somewhat alpha in their genetic make up. So wouldn’t the pay packet being made public ensure greater performance?

Furthermore, the accountability to the club and its supporters has to be considered. The members control the club and make it possible for the competition to exist. Our membership provides us weekly stimulation and satisfies our tribal nature as humans. So at the same time we should know who gets what so we can enjoy the discussions and the critical analysis which comes along with it.

Hmm... how much do you earn, out of interest?

Make it like the NBA( aside from the soft cap ), players contracts public knowledge and no compensation picks awarded, also make it a lottery for the draft.
