Should fire extinguishers be in every house?

Was watching random videos on youtube, and it only takes two minutes to flash over a room. We seem to have the wrong idea by only using smoke alarms to get people out of the house. I wonder how many lives would be saved and houses saved if the homes had fire extinguishers.

Could we make extinguishers compulsory or offer a rebate for those who buy them.

It goes without saying that if you don't have a fire extinguisher in your home, you are a f*cking moron.

Sure, if there's a massive blaze, a small (in comparison) fire extinguisher might not do much. But if the fire is caused by, say a cooking mishap, where the fire extinguisher could prevent the fire growing and in turn, burning all of your shit, not having one is a monumental mistake.

So yes, fire extinguishers should be in every house. People shouldn't be rebated either. It's a necessity. Either spend the relatively small sum of money to secure your ass, or be a cautionary tale of social Darwinism.

Was just talking about this with the family. We don't have one, but really should. Now that we've actually discussed it I am worrying that we don't yet have one when we might need it lol. Was blissfully ignorant before.

better than losing the house I guess. one for the kitchen, car and garage maybe. They're pretty cheap these days.

If you have one don't keep it where the fire is most likely to start ie kitchen in case you can't get directly to it. Nearby but accessible from other rooms.

I've got one, but I'm not sure where it is so in the event of a fire it won't be that useful.

The main problem with fire extinguishers in the home is that there are different types for different fires, and 99.9% of the population wouldn't know the difference. Use the wrong one for the wrong type of fire and it (a) won't work, and (b) could be dangerous. It's got A Current Affair written all over it.

Whilst I agree with your advice I dont know about that. I dont recall ever being into a house or apartment where there was a fire extinguisher inside the actual dwelling.

A kitchen fire blanket is far more practical and useful for a house.

Fire extinguishers only last for about 15 seconds. You need to be super confident in using it and use it properly otherwise you've got no hope. For a small kitchen fire a fire blanket is much better, because often things like fat catch fire--using an extinguisher can cause the flames to spread from the pressure of the extinguisher, if that makes sense.

If you're going to use a blanket make sure you use it properly. You need to get as close as possible to the fire, lift the blanket up to your face height (protects you from the heat and flames) and drape it over the fire. If you can, tuck it underneath the range hood (for example) like you tuck in a bed sheet. The aim is to smother the flames. And for ****s sake, don't lift the blanket back up until you're 100% sure that the fire is dead and buried. I've seen too many chefs lift up the blanket and then WOOOSH the fire goes nuts.

My old man had a collection of fire extinguishers around the home and shed.

I wasted them all once creating special effects for a movie. Smoke machines are expensive ya know?

Is the problem that by having the extinguisher it can potentially encourage people to try and fight fires (That they have no real knowledge in) themselves? Ergo they don't push the issue because people can end up getting themselves in a more dangerous position than just walking out the door?

Fire blanket is more of a necessity.

Is it compulsory to have it in apartments? We have one just outside the door and sprinklers through the home and on the deck.
I'm certain it does in holiday appartments

Yep, fire extinguishers would be available in the hallway of an apartment floor or in the stairways I think.

Or maybe I'm just thinking of the emergency fire stairs.
