As Wooshette pointed out in another thread interstate sides travel much more frequently than the Melbourne sides:
Using a calculation of 1 point per km and extrapolating out over a 15 year career that means that Perf based players receive an additional 769,530 frequent flyer points (or 19.2 bogan bali trips) over their lifetime AFL employment (sure they have to fly Virgin, but still).
This is a shocking statistic that must be addressed. This is nothing but an additional COLA given to interstate sides on top of their salary cap and puts pressure on the Victorian based teams (Essendon, Carlton, Collingwood, Geelong, Richmond, Melbourne, Dogs & St Kilda) to compete.
This goes against everything the AFL stands for with equalisation and Gil should act swiftly.
Given frequent flyer miles are managed by the airlines directly the only feasible way I can see this being addressed adequately is for the interstate sides to have their salary cap reduced accordingly.
Discuss.
