In 2018, Carlton got a special assistance package being able to pre-list 2 State League players (Suns got 3 in the same announcement).

Actually, under the system I proposed - you havve to give up your next natural pick - this year, to take a band 1 free agent, the Eagles would have to cough up our R2 pick - so a 20+ pick - plus additional points to cover the difference. No one can get a band 1 pick ahead of our first pick after all.Under this system if we were signing a band 1 free agent we would be have to give up pick 1. When we could always just take any uncontracted player via the ND or PSD from last anyway.
For me FA should have zero compo picks (bring the draft back to wear it should be).
Compo is salary cap to get spend on another FA.
But ... top 8 should be excluded from Restricted Free Agents. If they want a RFA, they can get them, but need to do it via Trade (ie pay a fair price for them).

I think it might be a bit late for the FA thing to matter, unless we only go for Starcevich.I think that a better solution to not getting an outright priority pick is for us to be able to sign FA this offseason without diluting pick 2, 2 extra list spots and 2 extra cat B spots, ability to prelist our NGA talent. I think that would combine to solve the mature bodies issue that they wanted North to solve by trading late teens picks or whatever, without ruining the draft for other clubs. Maybe even allocate us an extra 500 DVI points or something that we can attach to a trade that isn't connected to a pick, a deal sweetener
You missed the part where I said top sides should be excluded. No compo just means the top sides get stronger and the weak get weaker.
Tell us, which players have been attracted to North as free agents with North using all this spare cash to improve their list?
Players like Battle took less and left a struggling Saint Kilda to move to a contender.

Clubs shouldn't be punished when someone leaves an opposition club - which is what compo does.
Perhaps there should be a draft for free agents.
It needs to move to a model where clubs can trade players/their contracts, even if only the top paid 20% of the list. If players want true free agency they should have to give up a little, in my opinion. Then it's not free agency.
The AFLPA wants its members to move to their club of choice.

This would add a whole new dynamic and I think it would also bring an end to players signing 10 year deals.
Don’t have the clip but check out footy classified tonight, apparently eagles going for exactly what I said no FA dilutionI think it might be a bit late for the FA thing to matter, unless we only go for Starcevich.
Talks wouldve been well under way for a long time now and we've left it a bit late probably.
Yep sounds like Starcevich could be our guy, I more was referring to other free agents we havent already been strongly linked to, to really flex our salary cap space.Don’t have the clip but check out footy classified tonight, apparently eagles going for exactly what I said no FA dilution
More likely that we get a pick to trade for Stercevich, then it wouldn't factor into Oscar compoYep sounds like Starcevich could be our guy, I more was referring to other free agents we havent already been strongly linked to, to really flex our salary cap space.
The context of that convo is that eagles r asking for assistance to include being able to get FA without losing pick 2More likely that we get a pick to trade for Stercevich, then it wouldn't factor into Oscar compo
Depends if the AFL want the optics of handing us a pick or not.More likely that we get a pick to trade for Stercevich, then it wouldn't factor into Oscar compo
I get it - but giving us a pick that has to be traded gets around the optics of that request - media is already up in armsThe context of that convo is that eagles r asking for assistance to include being able to get FA without losing pick 2
Ie Hird. I actually liked him as a player - but as media expert - wow! he hate us so much and doesn't even hide his bias. Even preferred him coaching where he couldn't spout of as much bias rubbish

So a pick gets made up out of thin air & ends up at Brisbane for Starcevich?
FA compensation with extra steps.
A very well timed request too given the noise this year about compromised drafts. AFL will be hesitant to give out picks in an assistance package for this reason but the extra NGA picks and the compensation dilution removal are ways to assist us without disadvantaging other clubs and tbh should be used as a blueprint going forward for future assistance packages.I don’t think it’ll work that way
As the rules stand if Allen (to Brisbane) and Starcevich (to West Coast) both move as free agents then the Eagle’s Band 1 compensation would be diluted whilst Brisbane’s Band 2 or 3 compo would be wiped out
Sounds like West Coast are asking that the pick they get for Allen is retained if they bring a free agent in - this benefit is unlikely to be extended to Brisbane though so they’d get no compensation pick still.
It’s actually a pretty clever request because it’s a genuine benefit to us, but other clubs besides Brisbane aren’t impacted as we aren’t getting an extra pick as such.
But pillocks like Hird fail to understand this and just scream about priority picks and West Coast are a rich club
Hird, gees. Just listened to the FC bit.
Wealthed on about being the wealthiest club and that we should just blow the soft cap with our wealth, and how wealthy we are.
Scoffs at the idea of PP because wealthy west coast.
Laughs at Rory and Adelaide's lack of wealth
Can't we just trade like a 2nd rounder or something for Starcevich keys ???I don’t think it’ll work that way
