We just lost to North Melbourne hosting us in WA down at Bunbury. That's dire straights and enough to fold right there.

Our captain is (hopefully) leaving.

McGovern is dead.

Our 2nd round pick will probably fall around selection 31.

And that's all just in the first half of 2025 ^

The proper case will include just how many games we've won the past few years, lack of competitiveness, losing Shep & Venners to concussion, Simpsons pride etc etc etc.

People however need to temper expectations as the AFL hate the WAFC as much as the WAFL clubs and umps hate the Beagles.

The AFL wants control of all competitions and football in all states and has been ****ing over WA football for years because the WAFC still has control here.
Yeah because having a vic centric afl in charge of a comp over the other side of the country is going to work just so utterly well for us.

Be like asking the Russian government to be in charge of Australia….

I’ve always been very anti priority pick, but with how compromised the draft has become we almost have to get a package to assist.

I wouldn’t even think of it as ‘assistance’ but more the AFL making up for how our second and third rounders keep getting so pushed back the last few years.
Also agree in theory … but

Cold Chisel: I don’t mind taking charity from those that I despise.

Pre-Trade Period

The AFL Commission provided North Melbourne with an assistance package during the lead-in to the Trade Period which included the following:

  • One end-of-first round selection in the 2023 AFL Draft (currently pick 19)
  • Two end-of-first round selections in the 2024 AFL Draft (currently picks 19 and 20)
  • The continuation of the club’s ability to have two additional rookie list spots in season 2024

That was their second assistance package though. First one was a future second and third round pick that must be traded and two extra list spots. I think that is closer to what we would get.

I would take the f2 and F3 and 2 rookie spots, that would allow....

F2 for erasmus or phillips
F3 for busslinger

2 extra rookies dev and Clancy

Draft hand in tact for this year and next.

The VFL had been waiting a long time for us to be this shit.

They are not going to give us a priority pick to help us become good again

We could offer a million dollars and it won't happen

On performance/results we certainly deserve it as much if not more than GC and Norf in recent years.
Add to that our wretched run with concussion (Shep, Venners, Edwards and likely Gov), it should happen.

But like you I cannot help but believe we'll get nothing from the vAFL. If for no other reason than 'it has always been thus'; and the fact that they have their identifiable projects and beggar favourites... and we ain't one of either of those groups.

The only thing that may swing it for us is they don't want to be shamed by their obvious bias. But if this is the case and we get something, it'll be the absolute minimum they can get away with. I.e. enough to say 'see, we gave them an assistance package', but not enough to make a difference.

Maybe a couple of extra rookie spots and some must trade 2nd round picks that would end up being in the 40s anyway.

Dillon is already on the record as saying that putting the stipulation on the North picks that they had to be traded was a mistake as it devalued those picks. So I'm confident any assistance won't come with that stipulation.

With all our academy and father son picks coming through in the next few year I expect something to do with that as part of the package... be that extra rookie list or Cat B spots, or priority access maybe.

I know we all want a few more wins. But no Oscar, no Yeo, no Waterman, no McGovern. We are likely to finish the season with one win.

Considering poor management upstairs we should be screaming for P-Picks by now and asking for the world.

Give us the Gold Coast deal.

Priority Picks
Pick #2 and first pick of the second round #19 (currently pick #32) in the 2025 NAB AFL Draft.

That means, without Oscar or Harley leaving, we go to the draft, Pick 1, 2, 14 (Hawks), 19, 20

Mid-first round pick (currently pick #11) in the 2026 NAB AFL Draft.

First pick of the second round (currently pick #19) in the 2027 NAB AFL Draft.

+ two extra list spots for the three years.

There is zero chance of the AFL giving us a start of first round priority pick. Zero.

The absolute most the AFL might do there is if Oscar leaves, they tweak their compensation formula for us and give us pick 2 if it's just below the threshold for that.

What we should ask for is
  • Picks the same as North got a couple of years ago (3x end of first round over two years)
  • Perhaps some 2R picks as well, but honestly, we might not have the list space anyway. Might help with FS/NGA picks.

What West Coast and Freo should ask for (to compensate for extra travel)
  • 2-4 additional CatB rookies (maybe even normal rookie spots).
  • 2 top up rookie spots where we can only take mature age state league players (24+ or maybe 40+ WAFL level games)

Those would give us a couple of players who might be able to at least have the strength and conditioning to play at a pinch in the AFL if we need them to. I'd expect them to be outside the cap too, but minimum salary for that.

With Gov most likely being medically retired it makes sense.

I wonder if in the future there will be a compensation system for losing players to concussion. Don't know if I want it to be draft picks unless the draft gets overhauled.

Is it bad that I want a priority pick more because of the absolute melts from the Vic journo's if we do? McClure, Caro, Lllllllllllllllllllllllloooooooooooordo, Reiwoldt will have an all time sook.

That is far more rewarding than an extra 18-year-old in the second round.
