Have tracked down the full rundown of what north did with their two assistance packages, if anyone is interested.

North assistance picks: 2022 package, future second and future third, must be traded. Used with north F4 to acquire Tucker and Logue.

2023 package, end R1 2023 and 2 x end R1 2024.
2024 R1 traded to Gold Coast for 2023 pick 18, used on Riley Hardeman
2024 R1 and 2023 pick 44 traded to Sydney for Dylan Stephens and 2023 pick 25
2023 R1 and 2023 pick 25 from previous trade sent to carlton for Zac Fisher and pick 17, used on Wil Dawson

Can’t be arsed looking into whatever criticism there is on our assistance package but there really shouldn’t be much, if any

The package is best described as modest and has little impact on the other 17 clubs - only the end of R1 priority pick should be seen as remotely contentious. Other than clubs who traded out of this year’s first round won’t have a pick before our priority pick kicks in. As it stands what will notionally be pick 19 will push out to pick 24 due to band 1 and 2 FA compensation picks and then probably out to 30+ on draft night with academy and F/S bids

So we get an extra pick in the low 30 range - it’s not particularly significant

The other part of our draft assistance is four extra rookie list spots. These spots will be filled by a combination of picks in the rookie draft, NGA players that didn’t attract a bid in the main draft and SSP signings post draft (probably after a train on period)

We can’t sign any DFA players onto the rookie list predraft as they would need to be added to the main list

Essentially we’ll be looking at a group of players who went undrafted who will either be very raw/undeveloped or have failed at their first look on an AFL list. What’s more is that those four players will fall under the salary cap

Any help is welcome but these measures aren’t going to suddenly catapult us into contention and fall well short of the level of benefit that the reigning B2B premier has by having guaranteed access to a top 5 talent two years running

Those who would criticise the assistance clearly have no understanding of what’s been provided

As an end-of-first round pick, I think all such picks (assistance, compensation etc) are assigned in reverse ladder order, so our assistance pick would come before any end-of-first round compensation picks (I may well be wrong as often happens).

Still, it will be pushed back by Allen, TDK, Draper etc at least a couple of picks (and then yeah, by the raft of 1R bid matching on the night)

Meanwhile...for Tassie.

"The Devils will receive more than $4 million on top of their salary cap in sign-on bonuses to use across the first two years."

šŸ—£ļø Mitch Cleary on Tasmania's list concessions

Because Peel has a reserves side it is less impactful on them . As a stand alone we definitely could do with extra rookie picks permanent
The WAFC has placed a limit on the number of AFL listed players that can play in anyone game for West Coast and Peel.

Peel yes, West Coast no

We can play as many listed players in the WAFL as we can given we’re a standalone side

And if I recall correctly, he wasn't even taken under the father son rule. Nominated, but as I recall there was no bid?

There was no bidding system until the mid 2010s IIRC - if a F/S accepted your nomination, you automatically drafted them with your third (or later if more than one) round pick (since there was no future trading you had that pick).

Cousins and McIntosh both came in an even earlier period where F/S picks were just pre-listed.

IIRC it was Geelong that started the ball rolling when they got repeated top quality F/S picks over a long period which kept them up for years (Scarlett, Ablett, Hawkins, Bews) for basically chump change, resulting in a bidding system from about 2015. A lot of their success has flowed on from that period.

(Scarlett, Hawkins and both Abletts would have got R1 bids. As I recall it, Nathan was rated higher than Gary when drafted)

What ever happened to Nathan Ablett?

Didn't he just ride off into the sunset after the '07 premiership?

So who can we actually trade up with now?

Gold Coast are going for Petracca and Curnow so will they even have picks left to move up?

Saints offering up their first in a deal for Flanders so they are out.

Hawks will use their pick for Merrett

Carlton is a potential option due to Dean. However if Curnow goes they are more likely to trade up themselves and get a high pick in before Dean than back down the order.

Swans will want to get a pick in before King so unlikely they’ll trade back

Maybe Dogs but they are going hard for Wilkie so you’d imagine their first will be involved in that if successful.

I think we’ll have quite a few clubs coming hard for pick 2 but it might be difficult to package up our later picks and move up to a top 10 pick.
You mention the clubs trading top picks away but nothing about the clubs getting those picks in return

Properly balanced take on our assistance package from Sam Edmund

• Acknowledges that is winning a flag only 7 years ago and now getting help is contentious when other clubs having won a final in a generation
• Dismisses the argument that we’ve done it to ourselves and points out it’s far less than North received
• Rookie list spots are neither here or there
• An end of R1 pick in a highly compromised draft isn’t much

Same thing that lead to GAJ going to GC. Didn't want the pressure and insanity of being an Ablett (especially not a great one like Snr and Jnr), while living in Geelong.

Was happy to step back and just live a normal life.
