It wasn’t that long ago that people would have been outraged if the jumper changed. Now the Indigenous round jumper is celebrated and accepted by most fans.

The land that Victoria Park sits on shares an extremely strong Aboriginal History. Dights Falls and the land around is some of the most sacred Aboriginal land in the state.
What would you like us to be called during this round SotY?

I think it’s inevitable that at some stage in the future (maybe 50 years, maybe 100 years) that all teams will have as part of their identity their indigenous name, and it’ll be a strong and accepted part of their identity just as their mascot is. I just think that’s the natural direction that things will go in over the long term.

Sure, there is still strong and vocal opposition to it today, but I suspect that’s more amongst the older folks and their strong and vocal opposition will eventually die along with them.

I also think in some cases it’ll go even further and for some clubs the Indigenous name will replace the club’s name for everything but heritage round - but doubt it’ll go that far for us.

One way we may end up being a bit different to other clubs, is that our indigenous name may not end up being place related - if we do end up going with Barrawarn.

I wouldn't be so sure about the age demographic being most telling. It is moreso whether or not someone went to university/where they live that will indicate their opinions on things like this.

The inevitable NT team should 100% have an indigenous name, the Larrakia Serpents would be sick

That’s maybe the case today …

… but I’m looking at more like 50 - 100 years into the future.

Forget what the folks who go to University think now, it’s the kids in primary school who are being taught and exposed to this stuff now who’ll be setting the agenda one day.

The forces that act on relatively young cultures like ours is the quest for identity and the common ties that bind a collective together, and differentiate themselves from outsiders. We’re a million miles away from embracing indigenous culture as part of national identity - compare it to NZ for example - but I think that’s the direction we’ll head in.

Personally, No.

I don't think any sides should be honestly, its clunky and performative and creates imo a distraction from the real stories we are tying to tell. There is so much that needs to be discussed in this round especially around restorative justice for Aboriginal people and having the names change feels like its just an easy change that looks great but it is really bordering on shoving it down peoples throats. This is not how you bring people along.

I am progressive but I really think this is something that could be easily perceived as divisive. I don't think we have done the leg work as a country for this change to be appropriate right now. Especially when not all clubs do it and it doesn't make sense for all clubs.

One step at a time is how you run a marathon and thats what we are up against in Australia to fight against racism. This is rushing to the end for no gain and all pain.
I agree with some points. But division is a massive cop out... the indigenous population is 3.2%... so it's so skewed against, it's not fair

Maybe sometime in the future, it will be nice. As someone mentioned above, one step at a time.

And thank you to everyone for keeping this discussion respectful and intelligent, without resorting to emotional arguments as it can be a sensitive subject. It shows that we are making progress

It’s not pitting aboriginal vs settler it’s putting people who agree with the name change vs those who don’t. Unnecessary conflict when there are bigger issues at play.

Great question. I am a as staunch and traditional Collingwood supporter as you get so I can see the reasons that some supporters don't want the name changed. I can also see with several other clubs changing the name it does not send much of a message to Aboriginal players and supporters that we can talk the talk, but we won't walk the walk. How about a compromise to begin with with a shared name for the Round Collingwood / Yalla-birr-ang which is the Kulin interpretation of the area.
