Kennedy - has about 3/4 years left IMO
Darling - 190cm, question marks over whether he could be our #1 KPF
McInness - has never kicked more than 3 goals in four years of senior footy (WAFL or AFL)
Sinclair - questionable whether he can play as a pure forward
Lycett - see Sinclair
Lamb - 193cm, as with Darling question marks over whether he is a genuine KPF
McGovern - question mark over whether he's a KPF or a KPD
SpaceClef - like the thread and agree that we need a KPF but I would add either this year or next year.
This year's draft is not ideal for a KPF unless you are 1 or 2 and looking to draft Schache. Hipwood is academy so foregt. There are others like Weideman, Smith and Skinner that are possible picks but I expect the shortage will mean their draft range will be about 1 round earlier than what we had in 2014.
I suggest we wait for next year and in fact be prepared to sell our 1st round this year for Brisbane or Carlton's 1st round next year (we might need to throw in our 3rd as well this year or something like that)

Pure speculation about whether waterman and Cavka will become quality midfielders. Duggan has shown enough to be a premium mid, but that still leaves 2 out of the 3 that I named.

Personally think our forwards and defenders are still the strongest part of our team
Adamson is also another relatively young wild card to throw in the mix.

He was also best on ground and his game has progressed this year.
For sure. I mean, none of our current KPPs are bad - they're all decent, which is great for our depth.

But we don't really have a #1 future forward unless Gov stops being a defender.

I hope we put faith enough in Barrass next year to allow Gov to play full time KPF. But I reckon he's pencilled in as a defender now.

Considering I know nothing about the KPF depth in this draft or next year's, I am happy if the recruiting team go 'best available'

Big props it our recruitment team from 2006 onwards.
They have trouble with with mids/flankers but their drafting of KPP's has been elite.
With Freo its the other way round. Freo can recruit decent mids but can't nail the KPPs. Scary fact that the only decent KPP freo has developed successfully in the last 10 years is Zac Clarke the ruckman. That and Alex Pearce.

And I'm not sure that Zac Clarke counts as a decent KPP what with his record of 45 goals in 86 games.

He was the 2nd best ruckman in that 2008 draft behind Nic Nat. Clarke is not a "Key" forward. He spends half the game rucking, the other half resting as a forward. Still on a good day, he can kick 2-3 goals in game.

I doubt we'd be able make that trade. They wouldn't accept

I heard SOS is keen to start the rebuild of the list this year. The draft this year has quality - not depth. Therefore I think they are open to taking another 1st rounder and they are expecting Yarran's currency given his recent form will not deliver a R1.

My comment was something round that. Given your experience, what do you think it would take to swap R1 picks?

I honestly think our recruiting teams should switch picks this year, we will pick your KP and you can pick our mids.

if I was the recruiting manager i'd give up our first rounder for yarran and carlton's second round pick next year.

Now that is showing some creativity. Love it - fits both Carlton's need and Eagles need plus addresses F/S issues for us this year and next year.

Appreciate that you spelt out what you would do as against criticise ideas and only able to say "wouldn't do this" or "no - don't agree" or "they won't be able to deliver this". Makes it feel you are part of the solution as against others who are closed being part of the problem!

If we could get away with it, I would be all for it. I doubt they would accept. Our pick will around 16-18 or something along those lines. You are asking them to trade their first rounder for next year (whilst, it isn't set in stone, will most like be a top 5 pick. Going by this year, possible taking a year for the new coach to get settled).

In essence Carlton would get pick 16-18 + pick 50+ for pick 5 or less.
If you were SOS would you take that? Further this this, this draft isn't that great (by all reports).

Prime Example

Dom Tyson (who was pick 3) + pick 9 for pick 2

Is it time to pull the trigger and draft another KPF?

We have two incoming 'flag windows' according to our age profile, one more obvious than the other.

The first runs from now until Kennedy/Le Cras/Priddis retire or become incapacitated. I'd say two more years after this, or three if they all stay injury free.

We will lose a lot of potency when that happens, but our midfield and half back line will be well stocked with guys like Duggan, Lucas, Sheed, Yeo, Sheppard, Nelson and hopefully Waterman/Cavka.

So using that logic, we have a few strategies:
1) Trade now to bolster our midfield in a push for a flag in the most immediate time frame

2) Prioritise drafting an exciting tall forward prospect now, to replace Kennedy (note this assumes McGovern will not be a full time forward, which is a pretty good chance once Mackenzie/Brown/Schoey retire)

3) Draft best available (typically a mid) and wait until Kennedy retires to poach an established ready-made key forward (Hogan!)

I personally think we should use our first pick this year on a Kennedy replacement. Give him two years to develop, then bring him in for our next flag tilt in 2018/9
It's my fault, campaigners.

Sorry.

So we got 7 seasons out of JK and a flag!

Imo, Allen, waterman, Darling and Ryan/Willi should be fine. We will need to develop another forward, but it’s not where we will win or lose.

We need game breaking mids. If Chesser is as good as we all believe he is, he and a top 2 midfielder is a very strong start towards this. We’ve already got Culley, so there’s 3

Expecting another bottom 6 finish next year so there’s another chance to add a mid. A good young engine room for then next 7-8 years

To answer the thread title, yes.

But only if he shows the ability to play red wing or as a small forward in an elimination final.
