For anyone interested - Have a look at the smart replay & watch everything between the first & 2nd goal of the 2nd quarter.
Particularly watch Beams in the lead up to Luke Ball's goal. Contested a mark with Gibbs in his defensive 50 zone.
The ball hits the deck. Beams immediately springs up & sprints back toward our goal. Gibbs drops off & doesn't chase.
Beams has an inside 50 & is that knackered he doesn't kick with his usual penetration. However his work rate still contributed to the eventual goal to Luke Ball.
Showed Gibbs what work rate is. Really interesting to watch. Pendles work rate to get back to our defensive goal square was awesome as well. The mids are running hard.

Have a look & see.

Can everyone just be quiet about Beams? Pu-lease!

Only underrated by people who have no clue. Really really hope we sign him up before the end of the season/year

beams wont be going anywhere. likewise he knows this season is very very important if he wants the big juicy contract he deserves, so is chasing that 2nd copeland in the hope it proves his worth. and we do have the spare salary cap waiting.

he ticks every box but if he had a drawback i would say its that he's more contested and has less of the creative and linebreaking aspect in his game

Hopefully he stays low profile. Lack of opposition attention always helps.

He does get to do a lot more because the the attention paid to Swan and Pendles, but 2012 showed us how damaging he can be even with a reduced midfield. He is definitely one of our most important players and probably one of the top 30 mids in the league.

He got Gibbs when we played Cartoon.
Shook him off in the first quarter.

Scotland & Gibbs were both having stints on Beams. Neither were able to quell him for any length of time.

He was actually extremely quiet in the first quarter something like 1 possession, and then exploded for the next two :P

Scotland cleaned him up for the first quarter and a bit then he moved off him and beams started to build and got a few ones late for memory.

Just personally I don't rate Beams as highly as most on the collingwood board

EFA :)

Great player inside and out and is a natural leader a bit like John Wayne the strong and silent type and for what it is worth Beams will be a 1 club player.
He said the club were tracking him before he was drafted and thank goodness he lasted to our pick 29 he never seems to say a lot but he does lead by example and atm his form is on a par with 2012 tracking really well and comfortably one of the ten best mids in the comp.

The only thing I think Beams needs to do is hit up targets more often. That quick turn and snap onto his boot forward from the center square is 50/50 at best. He should look for the quick hand pass to a player in a better decision making position. Doesn't do the flashy things but Beams is a highly effective player. Isn't that quick but makes up for it in his gut running and attack on the ball and opposition. I don't know what else you want from a midfielder?

Beams is 14th in the AFL for clangers and it's generally accepted he is poor defensively (despite laying a few tackles). I'm not saying he isn't very good just not as good as some think imo. Offensive midfielders who get lots of disposals and kick a few goals generally get overrated a little on bigfooty

I'm with blaze re Beams and his two way running. He was one of the big culprits when we were accused of being one way runners. Appears to have improved in this regard since our form has changed. I remember seeing him walking multiple times in Round 1 as Freo rebounded through the middle. He should've been gut-running back to help the defence.

Last year he and Ball were our two best 'two way runners', we improved hugely defensively when they returned. I think the one to really pick up this year is Pendlebury who has covered the ground amazingly, even by his lofty standards.

Beams is quite good defensively... He works back to fill gaps and is ranked 17th in the league for total tackles - better than Pendlebury in this regard. Yes I know you don't want to talk statistics but Beams is never used as a shut down or run with player. He is too valuable to the team in his offensive abilities. While I don't mind how you rank players but credit where credit is due. He won the Copeland because he does the things that makes the coaches happy.

So when Pendlebury in 2013 publicly lashed the other midfielders in the team as "cheaters who run forward of the ball and don't work back defensively" who was he talking about? To me Swan and Beams are the biggest culprits. Getting a high tackle count and working hard defensively are too very different things imo. People who down hill ski and don't work back can still gets lots of "tackles". Kyle Martin is in the exact same boat, HUGE tackle count every game yet the coaches are still unimpressed with him defensively.

I'm not trying to roast Beams but to call him a top 10 player in the AFL is going wayyy over the top. We have 2 midfielders better than him at Collingwood alone... Still a very good player though
