Simmonds - let him sit until the PSD

Assuming we lose Otto, and are seeking to replace him with Simmonds, we have two choices.

1) Trade with Freo. Downside - we could end up spending one of the picks we received for Otto.
2) Wait for the PSD, and get him for free. Downside - We lose the option of chasing other players who fall through the contractual/trading net and are uncontracted, but we've already spent out pick on Simmonds. There may also be a bottom feeder thing if we tell Freo good luck but we aren't paying them a dime - what goes around comes around, as they say.

So, which option do we do? If we can get Simmonds for pick 20 or lower, I'd be inclined to trade and keep our PSD options open.

Agreed, it all comes down to what we can get away with giving Freo in a trade, if it's too much then no deal and get him in the PSD. I'd prefer to trade players ahead of picks for him.

Personally I hope we arrange at least SOMETHING to appease Freo in this deal. Karma can be a nasty sort of thing. Let's not screw another club over because we sure as hell had better not whine if it ever happened to us.

Simmonds for worse than pick 20 is pretty unreasonable. I'd take the higher of the picks you recieve for Ottens. Somewhere around pick 10. He is definately worth that. I don't think fremantle would settle for anything else.

we hold the whip hand, so I would see what Freo were prepared to take, and if we can offload some dead wood, them deal wiith Freo, otherwise wait until PSD. I wwould prefer to deal, as the PSD could even through up a Josh Carr if a deal can't be done with Port and Freo. I would prefer Carr to Simmonds.

If the currently mooted Ottens deal proceeds (we get pick 14, 16 and 32 and lose Ottens and Zantuck (and possibly pick 36)), we should offer Freo pick 20 for Simmonds.

Miller should then be in Salopeks face about entering the PSD and coming home to Victoria

We only hold the whip hand if Simmonds has said he will only go to Richmond and nowhere else. If he is prepared to go to one of the other clubs chasing him, Freo can deal with the highest bidder and he won't end up in the PSD. We have so far offered pick 36 which Freo have ungraciously refused. What else we might offer may depend on whatever we get for Ottens and Zantuck, although I can't see Zantuck getting us a great improvement over 36.

I agree completely.
Fremantle trying to poach D.Gaspar of Richmond all those years ago is the reason the club has massively overpaid him forcing the whole list to suffer.
Don't hold back on Fremantle because if they had no 1 pick in the PSD and could take a good player from you guys they wouldn't hesitate to force Richmond into the same scenario again.

Well if the Tigers want to make a point to Fremantle they should tell them to accept pick 36 for Simmonds or lose him for nothing. Their choice and knowing they could lose him for nothing i reckon they will want to salvage at least 1 mediocre pick.

you are right maybe we should offer our next pick after 36

Firstly the gasper thing was not our fault. However we did a similar thing to hawthorn when trading for Mcpharlin\croad, so i guess what goes around does come around.
Finally you will offer us something for Simmonds, it won't be fair ( probably like pick 28 or so) but we will have to live with it, and next year when hawthorn finish last they will do they same to you. So at the end of the day in this business we call football everything will work out about right. (Just don't cry in the years to come if M Coughlin threatens to head back west in the PSD)

If we don't trade for Simmonds.

1. Freo could trade him somewhere else. Simmonds could say no and go into the PSD or he may decide that the deal is OK and be traded somewhere else.

2. Freo could sit down with him between now and the PSD and offer him a new contract which he might choose to sign.

It is a bit of a gamble and relies on Simmonds and Richmond trusting each other.
