Shorter version: Adelaide are travelling a lot better than us.
A lot can change in a short period of time.

After Round 13 we were 1st, 2 wins clear and 16% ahead of Adelaide - 1st and 8th.

Three rounds later and we've lost two and they've won all three, passing us by a game and levelling us with percentage.

It's a really tight top 8.

This is true. But unless our midfield plays as a unit, we will see nothing much change. When we were at our best, we had a superstar midfield. Not a midfield with some superstars in it. We need to get back to that.

Totally agree. It starts and ends with the midfield. Unless we get that right we are making up the numbers.

I have no doubt Guthrie, Motlop, Duncan, Blicavs returning to some semblance of form...add in Caddy and Scooter and all of a sudden things look different.

The question is...how long is it going to take? I know Mitch's stats looked ok, but honestly some of his work looked panic stricken...a handball to Guthrie looms large in my memory....Mitch just isn't impacting on the game....Motlop just isn't getting in the game at all..., Blicavs is a shadow of the player from last year and Guthrie has gone missing the last few weeks.

Our fate rests with the players mentioned in this post coming to the party. As Bobby pointed out, the Adelaide game at home is critical, and those boys better be ready for it.

Had a nice soft run since they lost to us.

Round 9 - Beat up on a depleted Gold Coast away.

Round 10 - Good win against the Giants at home but did let them finish with a head of steam in the last quarter.

Round 11 - Thrashed a St Kilda side at home that becomes a rabble soon as they step on a plane.

Round 12 - Beat West Coast away, running over the top of them. The pick of their wins, but big question marks over just how good WC are.

Round 14 - Fresh off the bye to beat a tired North Melbourne side at home who were coming off consecutive 6-day breaks.

Round 15 - Made to work very hard against a plucky Melbourne side at the G.

Round 16 - Beat a young Carlton side away easily, but it was hardly impressive.

Their opening 2 months was brutal. The 'easy' run since then has only been balancing out how hard that was. To escape that and still be a likely top 4 (potential top 2 side) is impressive, and it's definitely not because of any easy draw.

They're my current tip for Hawthorn's 2016 grand final bitches.

Funny how we got PFD to get sel some help and prolong his career.

The direct result it seems however is that with PFD having taken Sels load he is now also carrying the load for Caddy, Duncan, Guthrie, Mots and Blitz.
So take a look and enjoy the view because if this continues we won't see it for much longer.

Go Catters

I might need to watch the replay again to confirm it, but late in the game when it was needed to be won, that it wasn't PFD or the skipper doing the dirty stuff but many of the lower tier players who stepped up.

From how I saw it, it seemed like those few who gave us the spark in the second quarter were Ruggles, Cocky, McCarthy and Motlop with Duncan providing some aswell.
Danger finished it of course but those guys seemed to start it.
Particularly the first 3 I listed all seem to be those who give 100% no matter what, was great to see.

Even Cowan and Murdoch were heavily physically involved when it was on the line.

Yep. That's why I think we turned the corner.

I'm making this up. But it was stuff like: McCarthy lays a bump and you think, good! Then Kersten lays a tackle. Good! Then Motlop taps the ball into space under pressure. Good! Then Duncan gets a handball out under pressure. Good! Then Murdoch hits a target. Good!

What I'm getting at is that players one after another were putting their bodies on the line and executing.
In the paper for the under 10's it would say 'team effort'.

They need to do this for the rest of the year...for too long they have been sitting back and letting others do the grunt work.

It all started when hendo went down.
It's like they all realised what putting your body on the line really meant.

I made my kids lift their heads away from the iPads to watch that effort.

The best thing about Danger for me last night was him throwing himself around in the backline like a seasoned defender. He really had a dip for the team then, like the others.

I didn't notice him that much early but from mid way through the 3rd I thought he was huge. For mine the tackle on Pav was play of the night.

He's no nonsense. Does a job. Does it well.

I'm starting to really rate him.

I posted This in the general discussion thread but danger would have to be winning the Brownlow right now

I'd like to get some views on who are the major challengers against Danger for the Brownlow this season?

He is 2-1 for the Brownlow, he's in career best form, stands out amongst our team, is a midfielder with the most goals (and almost most possessions).

Those odds shouldn't shorten, so best to bet on him at the end of the season to remove some risk in case he get's injured.

This site is interesting: http://www.afl.com.au/brownlow-medal/predictor

I'd say Sloane, D Martin, J Stevens are possible threats...

The Swans midfield is very even and competing with Buddy Franklin for the votes, so not sure whether there is a major challenger there.

Same with the Hawks, there team is too even for any standouts this season.

I haven't followed the Eagles, and whether Shuey is a major chance this season. I think Priddis' output is a bit lower this season and shouldn't be a major threat.

It's just felt that every time he's played really well, he is regarded as clear best on ground by everyone, with incredible numbers to back up the influence. And there have been a large number of those games. So I can just see so many games where he is guaranteed the 3 votes with very little chance of a surprise 1 or 2 votes instead in those games (which can trip up some 'favourites' in the past).

Danger also this week talking up the positives a bit more than last week:

"I've got no doubt that our best footy is as good as anyone, if not better, in the competition," Dangerfield said.
"I think our best is unbelievable."
"We've got to make sure that we can deliver that on a consistent basis. At the moment, we're not able to do that. We're grinding away, and we need to find ways to win," Dangerfield said.
"But I'm confident, come the right time of the year, we can get back to our very, very best."
