Skill Errors and Bad Umpiring

I didn't notice the umps too much today. They certainly didn't have any influence on the flow or outcome of the game. Shaun Ryan made an error awarding a free kick "down field" to Steve Johnson rather than Cam Ling, but it was hardly a hanging offense. Hardly noticed McLaren or Vozzo, and I am usually a harsh critic of both.

It only gifted a goal in a Grand Final hanging the balance.
No biggie.

You can't have it both ways. The pressure of a grand final played in the right spirit with hard bodies at contests everywhere is going to cause some errors. Would you rather every possession be uncontested with silky skills? Finals are about players rising above pressure to execute their skills just good enough to get the job done.

Oh wait, this is a Carlton supporter we're talking to. Of course he can't remember what finals are about.

This game was a good contest.

Umpiring was terrible in the 1st half. Didnt get a lot better. McLaren should never umpire another big game. Ever.

There were plenty of turnovers and skill errors both under pressure and without but quite simply every possession in a GF has added pressure.

Many people will remember and refer to this game as a great GF. It was good but maybe it was more about who was playing rather than what they did. It was scrappy at times, open at other times. There was plenty of missed opportunities and slow play. Hawthorn rushed 11 behinds. If the jumpers were different lets say it was Sydney V Fremantle then I am quite sure many people would be saying the game was error riddled crap with tactics that are outside the spirit of the game. There was a fair bit of sniping and a few heads shots.

I loved the game because it was a contest, a war of attrition, last man standing......all those cliches. For pure footballing skill and ability it was ordinary. There was limited Buddy magic, Scarlett was forced to play the traditional FB role, Steve Johnson got nowhere near the goals which is where he hurts the opposition and excites the crowd, Bartell went missing after quarter time.

There were touches of magic, Dews cameo in the 3rd quarter was sensational, Rioli everytime he got the ball, Mooneys goal from the boundary, Ablett and Franklin kicking successive goals which added a spark and threatened to lift the game to bigger heights, Youngs dash in the 1st half.

Overall the OP has a valid point.

Agree with that, he had a shocker.
Also agree about Johnson and Bartel.

This was just a hard game of footy watch some of the 2nd and third efforts of Rioli, Brown, Ablett, Selwood and Dew to name a couple - the desire for the hard footy was second to none.... In the end more hawks wanted it than cats nd that got them over the line - the pressure brang the skill level down but it was by no means a boring game...

It was a great game. OP is an idiot. A lot of the skill errors were caused by hard pressure.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I hav a theory that the cats are so 'used' to favorable umpiring they even go looking for it - The umpires can help you out guys but they cant win it for you.

I think the hawks are so used to getting squat they donr even bother - just get on with it. Even more so yesterday because they realised one of geelongs tricks is to get on with it while you have a sook.

The actual physical effort the guys put in when a lot of things werent going well for them must rank with some of the best ever. Very Proud.

scott mclaren and all the other afl umpires >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>> >>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> all the big footy experts who couldn't umpire a game of ****ing marbles :thumbsu:
