Okay, I am going to air one of my greatest insecurities here in the hope of finding some help.

My skin is not great. It's not awful like the 'before' shots on the clearasil/proactiv ads. I do, however, even at the ripe old age of 20, get the occasional cluster of pimples, especially on my chin, and I find that my skin is very irritated as well. As I said, it is not the 'before' shots that leave you horrified or anything like that, but it is enough to make me insecure about it. It was something I would assume would be gone as I grew up, and it has got better, but is not great.

Now, have you ever had anything like this? Do you have any advice for me on this situation?

Note: I work in chlorine 19+ hours a week, so anything that dries my skin isn't going to help at all as it will be far too painful when I am working in the water.

Cheers, GD.

Make sure you change your pillow slips regularly and don't "over clean" you skin, otherwise you take away the "good oils".

I'm forty next month and currently have a pimple on my forehead. They never go away, they just occur less frequently.
As I said, they aren't all over my face and they're not horrifying or anything, would just like them to be much less frequent.

Is that you Matthew Kreuzer?

**** you! :p

Cheers bud. What would you describe as 'overcleaning'?

Cut dairy for a week or two and see how you go...

I used to have acne but basically sorted my diet at 18 and been smooth as a baby's bottom since.

I don't eat much dairy, if any at all, as is. I am lactose intolerant, so I avoid it as much as possible.

Yeah, I think my razor for shaving is probably causing some sort of issue. I shave with an electric, as well. Anybody got any good shaver recommendations, as well?

My only routine consists of washing my face with cold water every morning. Also what do you mean you 'work in chlorine 19+ hours a week' ? Are you one of those people that teaches scuba diving at the public pool?

Haha, no, I am a swimming teacher.

I reckon some sort of post-shave balm and moisturising is important.

The condition of my facial skin has improved out of sight since then. Skin tends to be dry after shaving- too dry- and probably a ripe time for irritations and/or acne to set in.

Aftershaves are unnecessary, cold water does the trick.

Maybe some sort of oil free, fragrance free, pH balanced cleanser and moisturiser at night so your face is fresh after all the chlorine?

I never had massive problems with acne, but I regularly got pimples. Things I did to minimise the issues:

- used one of those facial cleansers each morning in the shower, then washed my face at night before bed
- exfoliated weekly
- changed my pillow slips every couple of days
- kept my hair cut short so it stayed off my forehead and away from my face in general
- switched from an electric shaver to wet shaving

I don't know whether those are all good ideas but collectively they worked pretty well for me. We ate a good diet at home (very little fat and oil) so I am sure that helped.

It also seemed like the more I exercised the better my skin was. I have no idea why, because I would have thought the more I was sweating, the more problems I'd have. Maybe regular perspiration helps keeps the pores clean, or something.

Think the electric might be causing some issues.

Every now and again, for me, some rashes or minor pimps come out the next day after shaving with it. Will have to make the switch myself

Pigeon superstition.

Huh?

There's a lot of interesting stuff out there you can try, see what works etc. diet can be fun to play around with imo. Just google up some research and try it.

Play around with your diet and keep your sheets changed regularly. Try not to start the day without showering. I know it sucks having them, but unless they're painful it's just a part of being in your teens/early 20's.

I'm 25 and still get the odd pimple, but my face is much clearer than when I was 20. Age did the trick.
