I don't understand why this kid hasn't been nominated for rising star. I don't know what the hell AFL officials are smoking or they have an anti-Adelaide agenda. This kid is unbelievable! He has a huge future at the AFC :thumbsu:

yeah i think i speak for all of us when i say we are thrilled with the way he has come along this year...

real hard nut. i reckon they'll be a few danger/sloane head clashes over the years

I think because he played round 1 and then got injured, this award seems to be about stringing decent games together rather than one great performance after you get past about round 3.

He is also not a stat machine, he gets contested ball rather than uncontested so his stats are a little lower. Those type of kids get less attention than those who walk off with 25 touches.

Same reason why he will never win a brownlow but some outside runner will.

He had 22 touches against Melbourne (i think?) the other week so he's not someone who's always going to get around the 13-15 possessions mark. When his match fitness gets to an AFL level he'll get more uncontested touches as well as his trademark hardball gets :)

Certinally has a huge future with the AFC in the AFL and hopefully some sort of leadership role in the future as he has leadership material written all over him.

Always great to get feedback like this from another teams supporter.:thumbsu:
Hopefully next week after dominating in the Showdown ;)
Phil Davis has had a good season and kudos to him for getting his nom:thumbsu:
Sloaner will get his before the season is out, if he keeps putting up what he did against your Cats each week.

I’m considering going into buy the white away jumper with 31 on it. Because when i go in and ask for a 13 but hope they give me a 31.

The sloanedog is on the list now – Walker, Danger, Mackay and now Sloanedog.

Nominations will always be given to players showing consistency over a number of games. While it wasnt Davis' best game on the weekend, he has been solid for an extended period.

I have no doubt that if Sloane maintains his form, he will get a nomination before the season's over, possibly in the next few weeks.

Regardless, I dount think Davis or Sloane are the type to care about this award. Their performance is judged internally and so far, both are doing everything right. No doubt Craig loves Sloane and his toughness at the ball.

Sloane + Danger in 3 years = best contested possession players in the comp!

lol, made me think of "pretty fly, for a white guy" by The Offspring.

Actually he's a pretty good all round ball winner, it just hasn't come to the fore at AFL level yet.

He's an absolute beauty, isn't he! His beep tests are being confirmed by what I am SEEING! And his attack on the ball, composure, reflex give:thumbsu::thumbsu:. How did he ever slide for us to take as a third round draft pick? For that matter, how did we ever collect McKernen with a mid to late second round pick. We have been getting some sort of squad together, one that will hopefully match the orchestrated squads of Gold Coast and West Sydney in the decade to come...and surpass them!:D Kudos to the administration:thumbsu:. Keep it up even though we are all ready having selection dilemas:eek:.

Your comment on him sliding to us in the third round is one that's perplexed me for a while as well Big future. Obviously I'm a fan so I'm biased, but I've never understood what was wrong with Sloane that he didn't go earlier. Don't forget that he was available to be selected in the 2007 draft as well. He had captained in the juniors, was well known as having brilliant leadership skills, had successfully blanketed higher-touted picks during the carnival (including destroying Yarran), had a brilliant 2008 draft camp (11th in repeat sprints, 7th in 3km time trial, 2nd in the beep test) and had played good U18 football for two seasons. He was well liked among his peers, recruiters spoke positively about him, his name was in the public media very early on, he's a decent height for a mid, not too slow... why was he still there at pick 44? I've never been able to understand it. Sometimes gems slip through to you and you can kind of see why recruiters held off, but with Sloane I can only assume that there was just so much quality in the 2008 draft that he was somehow ignored.

From my point of view, he was clearly the most likely player to succeed from our 2008 crop. Outside of some slight concerns on his kicking, he has no real weaknesses that I can see, and plenty of strengths.

To answer the OP, his injury at the start of the year hasn't helped, but you'd have to think he'd be a good chance to score a nomination in the last few rounds when most of the good young talent has already been recognised with a nomination. We're very happy with him :)

There was a fair bit of excitement around the 2008 draft. All that key position talent had people jumping around. A lot of players with one or two freaky traits wooing recruiters. Trust Rendles, recruiter of Hendles, to quietly nab a slider as his rivals fapped to Vickery's contested marking.

There were concerns over Sloane's frame - whether it would hinder the effectiveness of his contested ability at the top level. That question has been answered pretty quickly, his strength has been impressive, no issue clearing the ball.

It's just one of those things in footy though isn't it. Sam Mitchell went at 36 (love the Mitchell comparison NTRabbit, it's a good one), Montagna 37, Lake 71, Johncock 67, LeCras at 37 was a steal. Players develop more in certain areas than expected, others play to their limitations absurdly well, either way a lot of out and out stars of the game go late. Quite amazing to look back and see some of the names who weren't rated within a bull's roar of the top 10 in their year.

It's a shame Goodwin is retiring this year when captain wannabees are in such short supply. I love this kid more than any other draftee I have seen for the best part of a decade.

How we got him in the 3rd round only god knows...

But to use George McFly...

'It was our density'

Great game by him tonight... he will be this rounds nomination. He didn't shirk a contest... and what's more is that he took it upon himself to lift us on multiple ocassions with contested ball, great vision and some great handball work. The Sam Mitchell likeness is well founded.

what a player this kid is. His ability to keep his feet, win the hard ball and deliver it quickly is sensational. Close to our best player tonight. Looks born to play in the wet.
Really, I thought he was a tackling machine in the first quarter, without actually getting much of the ball himself. He then went AWOL for the 2nd & 3rd quarters, before re-emerging to do some really good things late in the 4th.

I wouldn't say he had a bad game - he was miles ahead of Walker, Tippett and our ruckmen. I certainly wouldn't have him listed as one of our better players though.

I thought Thompson & Rutten were our two best by a country mile.

I think Jeff Garlett from Carlton will get it this week

14 contested possessions, highest on the ground. Didn't think he was in our best five or anything but would have been in the two or three after that.

Only thing was that he didn't quite have the strength to keep his feet in some one on one battles. Went to ground a bit easily.

think he is too old.... 21 years and 5 days old...

My boss used to watch Sloane play as a kid for Upwey/Tecoma (or Upwey or Tecoma?). Nothing but kind words for him. Has had 'gun' written all over him since juniors.

You probably wouldn't have seen it on the TV, but the effort Tippett put in was absolutely top notch. He deserves a lot of credit for this in a game that really didn't suit big men at all. He ensured that he made every contest that was anywhere near him and at the very least he'd ensure that the ball was brought to ground. Had we had any half decent small, crumbing forwards, his role would have been pivotal, unfortunately we never had enough blokes front and centre to take advantage of this.

I was very impressed with Tippetts efforts today, one of my big criticisms of him over the year has been his lack of a genuine work rate, today I could not be critical. Although his kicking needs massive work over the preseason.

I think we made a big mistake dropping Jaensch, these were conditions that would have suited him down to a T. Quick, hard, skill, clever and growing up a hills lad he'd be no stranger to wet weather football.

Edit: Agree regarding Sloane though, was good early, went missing for a fair chunk in the middle, but was really good late.

Jaensch had his chance... got his taste and has as much to work on as anyone. He needs an AFL preseason more than anyone on our list. Has good skills but no good if you can't contest the hard ball and can't run out a game more than 1 out of 4 attempts.
