Small Defender

Well, Medhurst has once again shown something that we lack. A small defender. We don't have one. Lets have a look at matches this year

Round 1: Thomas, 3 Goals. 14 touches
Round 2: Gamble, 3 Goals. 13 touches
Round 3: Betts, 1 Goal. 27 touches
Round 4: I didn't see this game so I don't know who was the standout small forward. I'm sure someone can tell me though
Round 5: Milne, 2 Goals. 21 touches
Round 6:Medhurst. 6 Goals. 17 touches


So. Do we have a player on our list who can play small in defense? Do we draft one in this years draft? Or do we try to trade one in?

I think trading one in may be a good option. But I'm sure some people can make a good argument for each point

you guys will probably shoot me down for suggesting this, but at freo Roger Hayden has been a revelation for us the last five years or so. and i think that courtney dempsey is of similar stature, would it be worth giving him a crack? just a thought

welsh was pretty solid as our small defender, before his move forward.
reimers has shown signs, too, although i love the idea of him crumbing/tackling up forward, especially now that davey looks gone.
also loved seeing him get stuck into thomas. 'stick death' at its finest!

I'm pretty biased towards Reimers as he is my favourtie player. But i think he would be better forward and going into the midfield.

Is still very slow. When he runs it is like he is in mud.

was he? well maybe you wont have to trade or draft anyone, maybe you already have your player, you just need to get the guy fit. roger hayden had heaps of soft tissue injuries at the start of his career too, hopefully dempsey can get his body together

Hislop and Myers are the players I can see coming in and filling the role in the near future. Dempsey back would also be handy but he is not that great at shutting his opponent down.

NLM did a very good job on pretty boy Thomas. When the game was still there early he beat him, outmarked him and got spoils in. He is very quick for his size and i think he needs to stay down back until we're settled and regain some experience

Thomas is pretty as well isn't he? And yes, Nat-rat did a good job on him before you know, We became shit and the ball has coming into the 50 every second minute.

I mentioned the need for a small defender a couple of weeks ago. Now you can see how important it is.

Defenders for the smaller-medium players:
- Nash
- NLM
- Dempsey when he returns
- Rama, if the opponent is a bit slower

I particularly like the rebound that comes from Nash/NLM/Dempsey, which gives another reason to have them starting back there. I don't think NLM has demonstrated the focus up forward to justify keeping him in that half...

No confidence so far in the Winderlich experiment down back...and think Houli will be more valuable in the middle.
