St.Kilda 1978

What the hell happened to the Saints midway in 1978?

They gotta good start to the year after finishing bottom in 1977.

But midway they were getting absolutely thrashed by even ordinary sides.

Only to turn it around and became world beaters only to miss the finals by half a game.

The year after they returned to the bottom and it took nearly 20 years before reaching the Finals again.

So what happened?

I was to young to pay attention to an opponents team.

But do any Saints fans remember the reasons why the Saints played so badly midway and so brilliantly towards the end?

You thrashed your would be Elimination Finalist Carlton by 40 points in the last round.

Thrashed eventual Premiers Hawthorn by 56 points in Round 20.

Although eventual semi finalist opponent Collingwood thrashed you by 40 points in round 21.

In Round 3, 1910, St Kilda named this side against Collingwood:
Gordon Dangerfield, Wels Eicke, Percy Ellin, Wally Gant, Sam Gravenall, Tommy Lamprell, Harry Lever, Harry Matheson, George McCart, George Morrissey, John Nilen, Matt Outen, Wally Roach, Bobby Rowe, Ted Smith, Jim Stewart, Artie Thomas, Frank Williams

Prior to Round 15, 1911, Wels Eicke's dad and former captain Joe Hogan (two different people, pardon the syntax) had access to the St Kilda dressing room revoked. The Saints demanded the administration to retract the ban, but were denied. So, eighteen Saints (Baird, Briggs, Butler, Dangerfield, Eicke, Graham, Gregson, Lever, Mackenzie, Merrett, Mortimer, O'Brien, Outen, Parker, Plowman, Scott, Sellars, Thomas) gave the club the middle finger and stepped down for the rest of the year. Ernie Sellars seemed to change his mind and opted to play on.

The administration opened the door to let any local footy player get their shot at the big time to make up the numbers. In Round 15, 1911, St Kilda named this side against Carlton:
Alby Bowtell, Roy Cazaly, Claude Crowl, Peter Donnelly, Alf Hammond, Harrie Hattam, Otto Lowenstern, George O'Connor, Otto O'Pelt, Bill Patterson, Bert Pierce, Ernie Sellars, Rowley Smith, John Somer, Tom Soutar, Charlie Taylor, Bill Ward, Bill Woodcock

In the space of 434 days, St Kilda had played two completely different teams.

Question 1: Has there ever been a shorter length of time where a club has fielded two completely different teams?
Question 2: For every other club, what is the shortest length of time taken to field two completely different teams?

We are sitting around having a beer and talking old footy.

The question is:

Why did goal umpires wear coats, slacks, hat, shirt and tie?

Someone here can give me reason, I am sure.

Coats to protect from muddy squares

Hats and Ties because that was the fashion in the day

Saints came under heavy criticism after Round 7 match against Essendon (in full on YouTube) with several controversial and violent incidents. I think the Essendon president called the Saints players animals.

Their star recruit Sidebottom was suspended for several matches and the stuffing just seemed to be knocked out of the club in general, leading to their slump for the next couple of months.

My apologies if this is posted elsewhere.
I believe there were only 20 rounds in the 1993 AFL home and away season.
Why was this the case? I thought it was normal back then to have e.g. 22 rounds?

The AFLPA managed to convince the AFL that the season was too long. Players got paid the same whether it was a 20 or 22 round season.

Most clubs made financial losses that year so the season was extended again.

There was also the league wide bye between Round 10 and 11 for the interstate tournament with Vic, NSW/ACT, SA, WA and QLD/NT playing two games each. It lost a shedload of money and the idea was binned for good.

I would like to thank you both for your responses. I had been perplexed about the duration of season 1993 for decades.
Now I can move on...ha ha.

I also seem to recall that Carl Ditterich walked out from the club for some weeks mid season. He was sorely missed and the morale of the club was at a low ebb.
With the incredible talent and toughness in the side, who knows what might have happened if the Saints had indeed managed to qualify for the finals?

Anyone have the Sandringham goalkickers/best from Round 18, 2003 (Geelong 16.11.107 d. Sandringham 13.14.92).

The Football Record for that week on SLV is broken, and the result I can find in a newspaper via ProQuest shows 'not available' for both categories.

Thanks!

It was still playing up until a minute ago (that SLV page), but has come good!:

Does anyone have the March 5, 1981 edition of Inside Football?

I desperately need a scan of what is on page 22 (a page covering VFA football).

I am working on a book on the 1981 VFA season and there was a review of the 1980 season on page 23 and a review of the 1980/81 summer on page 22. I have page 23 as a PDF but somehow don't have page 22 apart from a stripe of text on the right hand side of the page.

Living in Perth, I don't have ready access to the SLV microfilm reels. The book is more than 95% completed and getting a scan of the page will speed things up by a few months as I don't expect to be in Melbourne until the middle of next year at the earliest.

I heard an old goal umpire on the radio probably 7-8 years ago

And he said what use to happen back in the 1960s re goal umpires in the VFL when it was an 18 game season

He said they all meet up somewhere get a Keg of beer , and they would be allocated a block of 6 games , so they knew where theyd umpire for the next 6 weeks

Then in 6 weeks time theyd all meet up again , get a keg of beer again , get allocated another block of 6 games , and then again in 6 weeks theyd do it a 3rd time
