Now that the five categories and the new criteria have been listed. If Bock was to go to the Gold Coast, which category do you think he will fall into?

Feel free to comment on any other player of interest as well. (purely for fun)

1st rounder at the very least. If he goes, he'll be on a fair bit of coin, and the new compo's factor this in quite heavily I believe. Age won't count for him, but then he should score reasonably well from Shifter and Mackay.

So what is Bock's worth?

Depends what one we are talking about

The fit one that made AA = Heaps

The one we have now = Not much

The AFL have said that clubs won't get full value for their players.

So if Bock is worth two first rounders you are probably more likely to get a single first rounder etc.

You won't get "fair" probably more like 75% of fair.

so hypothetically, if bock goes to gc, we get one first rounder, would that mean, in theory we could have picks 4 and 5? isnt the consolation pick the one after your normal first round pick?

You are right about the consolation pick being immediately after your normal pick in the relevant round, but it won't be in 2010's draft, and with the way our list is developing I can't see us finishing so low as to get pick 4 in 2011's draft.

No, as far as I know its the immediate pick after your 1st round pick in the year you choose to use it. ie 2012 wherever we finish that year.

Don't forget that the next few years' drafts will be "compromised" as well. We may be waiting a while to use whatever compensatory pick we receive.

What are the five categories? My intuition tells me that Bock would be a first round pick but I wouldn't be shocked if it worked out to be a second round pick.

If it comes down to salary, a first I'd imagine. That's the system they're basing it on, and if 600K isn't the 2nd bracket.....

Still wanting to see this somewhere...

It's a ridiculous situation.

The AFL should have given the GC picks 1 to 10 and then picks 26 to 30 and told them to trade if they wanted top shelf players. Simple.

This stupid amendment hurts the other 16 clubs more than it penalises the GC.

Caroline Wilson said on 5aa yesterday that apparently Harbrow is a Category 1 player. (2 first round draft picks) If he is a Category 1 after half a good season then Bock has to be C1 as well. Surely.

Edit: Age is a major factor. So Boak and Harbrow C1, Bock i would assume C2 due to his age.

The real question is... how many first round picks are available?

Can you just keep adding picks and calling them first rounders?

First thought, "You might want to rethink that question, Coop!" Sorry. :p Then it empasised the adsurdity / ingeniousness (take your pick :D) of the situation. As WALL-e says:

You can.

So if 10 teams have a compensation pick, then the first round would be 26 deep.

And it's even more fun than that: Cat 1 players receive 2 first round picks, and the release yesterday expicitly said that up to 30!!! players could receive cat 1 compensation. I assume that is 15 for GC, 15 for GWS.

So just suppose - the expansion teams each take their max uncontracted players, the compensation board takes the easy way out and calls them all cat 1, and all the clubs decide to go for 2013 compensation

"Round 1, 2013: pick 54..."

Yep, you heard it first here. If that unlikely but possible scenario played itself out the 2013 premier's last round 1 pick would be Number 54!

Caroline Wilson said on 5aa yesterday that apparently Harbrow is a Category 1 player. (2 first round draft picks) If he is a Category 1 after half a good season then Bock has to be C1 as well. Surely.

As above, I think it is highly likely that allocation of Categories will be generous - AFL has nothing to loose by that and a lot to gain.

You picked up on that hey :)

Give out 16 first round picks and they all effectively become second round picks :)

Not quite is it?

All the late picks in the first round effectively become second round due to the fact those with a 'compensation pick' take it directly after their usual first round pick.

So the nomination of taking picks will be an intersting saga in and of itself.

If you finish bottom AND have a compensatin pick and its a good draft... you're sitting pretty. If you win the flag your compensation pick and your regular pick are pushed back substantially..... possibly not a terrible outcome if you truly like the 'push the weaker teams up the ladder as fast as possible' mentality.

Did I hear correctly that if you lose a player and are given 2 draft picks you can claim one of those picks in future drafts

Not only can you, I believe you must use all of your received picks in future drafts. I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to use them until at least the 2012 draft.
