There was a lot of heart burn around the league when the expansion clubs came in and mauled the drafts, they were given a direct bounty to the countries most gifted kids leaving the rest of the clubs to fight over the scraps - even gifting one lucky club a three peat in a most fortunate accident of history ;)

But as was always gong to happen, the wheel was destined to turn and there were never going to be able to hold onto the embarrassment of riches. Maybe because the plastic club had no history to hold players, maybe because the list size needed to be cut, but mostly because all those top end stars never fit under one cap.

Anyhow, as Princess Leia said to Moff Tarkin, the tighter you squeeze, the more gun players will slip through your fingers, and slip they have, across the league far and wide, but who has been the big winners and who have missed the boat?

You can't just judge on the quality of player brought in, but how much did you pay for him? (draft wise or contract wise) and were they the right fit for your club?

Crucially this was a time to create good ties with the GWS as they are big pick traders and player movers, create a solid relationship and it could bare fruit later on.. cough setterfield cough.

Lets have a bit of a look around to see who got what

(mostly off the top of my head, may have missed some)

Adelaide - C.Hampton

ehhh hasn't really helped much, but jury still out. Give them a 3/10 on the poaching index

Brisbane - J.Barrett

Same boat as Adelaide, but paid even less for a rookie, not factor in this field - 1/10

Carlton - Sumner, Kennedy, Marchbank, Plowman, Phillips, Jacksh, Whiley, Lamb, Pickett

Became a bit of a dumping ground for a while there but picked up some genuine talent in Marchbank, Pickett and Kennedy, still they probably paid overs for a lot of scraps. 8/10

Collingwood - Adams, Treloar, WHE.

Great poaching from the pies but they did pay a pretty penny for them - pity they couldn't find a forward to go with them... score a high 9/10 however.

Essendon - Aylett, Edwards, Giles, Stewart, Smith

Started slow with a couple of free busts but have taken two possibly elite players for not much cost. 8/10

Fremantle - Wilson, McCarthy

Minimal poachment, but have done well with two good players, enough for a 7/10

Gee - nil

Gc
- nil

Hawthorne - JOR

pretty much a bust, cant crack the team, after being a #1 pick. 2/10

Melbourne - Tyson, Frost, Bugg

A decent kid in Tyson and a couple of role players, nice business from the dees, enough for a 6/10

Norf - ahern

free hit on an inj ravaged kid -speculative but could come off 3/10

Port - Hombsch

Another role player who ahs been in and out, free hit really - 3/10

Richmond - Townsend, Miles

have done OK from the gws, with a couple of ok picks but really killed the HGC with two top enders - but that's a different thread. 5/10 here.

Syd - Lamb, Edwards

Couple of free hits that didn't come off 1/10

STK - Bruce, Steele

Good form by the saints, steele could be anything and Bruce will grow into a decent forward, 7/10

WB - Darley, Boyd

Sold the farm and their captain for the number one pick - ruined the club culture in the process - 1/10

WCE - Giles

Free role player in a time of need, cant complain 4/10

Moving forward I reckon Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton have been the big winners.

Any thoughts?

fair call actually - that one game could redeem it... but man, the pace is messed up right now. could nearly trade it back to that very trade
I don't think it's messed up just because of that.

And in any case, Griffen wanted out when he was traded.

Yeh true ;)

I guess it seems it screwed up the pay structure and now you see he and schache both frozen in the 2s while the ones are screaming for a fwd... Using an AA Backman there who can't touch it.

Reeks of board trading against football Dept wishes

I think Carlton has done better than given credit. They also got Jarrod Pickett.

Jarrod Pickett missed his first two years of footy with a dodgy foot. Played ok last year as a speedy small forward and will only get better.
Plowman is a solid player at the back for them, has really slotted in nicely. When kreuzer was missing phillips was an able back up as well.

All in all they have got 4 best 22 players and a solid no.2 ruck. Not bad at all.

Jacksh though......sheesh

with the amount of players they got they were going to jackpot eventually!

still, 8/10 is a pretty high rating

plus if memory serves, were they not giving up high end picks for the hand fulls of players?
likewise collngwood. we didn't give up much at all in hindsight

Not sure how Bruce could be any more 'decent' than what he has shown at St Kilda to date. Pick 48 for a player who has averaged 2 goals a game for over 3 seasons is pretty damn good.

Regardless of where the Dogs are at now. Boyd was a huge factor on Grand Final day, in their first Premiership in x amount of years. I'd give it a 10/10, and would gladly be in their position.
I don't think it's messed up their pay structure. Stringer didn't leave due to pay issues. Who else have they lost? Hamling had a offer to go home, but other than that. No real signs that Boyd's salary has had a impact on their 'pay structure' yet.

Hence a 7 stk rating!

Better than most, rung under Carlton and us imo.

I think something stinks at the dogs and aligned it to the trade, I conceded I didn't factor in the gf performance which was a mistake

As far as bang for buck goes the Saints and the Tigers are the big winners given their spend.

Smith could prove to be tremendous value given the deal essentially allowed us to bring in Stringer as well

Good post and an interesting topic.

I think your assessment of the three teams that have done best from it is pretty spot on in Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon.

Carlton absolutely went for the scraps, but at the same time they have picked up some very decent talent as well.

Ultimately it's hard to ignore the quality the Pies grabbed, and whilst acknowledging they did pay up for what they got, they got their men.

Now what that may have done as a flow on effect to the Pies in other ways is an entirely different story...

How the hell are we rated higher then St Kilda?

We got 2 spuds. They got none.

Bruce>>Stewart
Steele<Smith

If the 2 duds got us the higher score then how do we beat Carlton?

I never know when you are trolling any more!

Smith >> Steele
Stewart > Bruce

Bruce had a good first year but a poor second one.

our duds were free hits though, very little cost at the end of drafts?

Bruce's poor second one is still better then anything Stewart has produced.
And Steele is 22 and last year was borderline better then Devon.
Take off the red and black glasses, its embarrassing.

are we not in an opinion based forum?

my opinion is steele is a good midfielder without x factor - devon can have the edge with x factor ontop

Bruce had a good year then a poor one, however should exel now voldt has gone, pick in the 40s whatever it was. Stewart was pick 1 million - had a solid first season without dominating... im only able to assess his second year on one showing which was super. If that is his new standard I don't see how its is embarrassing - or red and black goggled.

I find your trolling embarrassing but id never say it , probably will now.
