tonight got me thinking - what soccer films have been made, and which are the best? here are the ones that come to mind for me:

Fever Pitch
Mike Bassett England Manager
Mean Machine
Bend It Like Beckham

and in cinemas now: Football Factory

interesting movie, and you don't see a single ball kicked

Saw a movie called Pure Belter I think it was. About two Geordie kids who do anything for a season ticket at St James Park. Found it pretty average and a bit depressing at times too.

I know the one. wasnt at all what I expected. The football was more of a background theme compared to the social decay occuring around them.

I think it was called Purely Belter, good film IMO but like those gritty Northern social commentary background type movies. The ones that I have seen (from memory):

Purely Belter
Escape to Victory
Fever Pitch
There's only one Jimmy Grimble (has the best line in cinematic history :))
Mike Bassett England Manager
Mean Machine
Football Factory

I also remember seeing a film about Sheffield United, I've got a feeling Sean Bean might have starred in it, but I might just be thinking of him because of his links to the club.

I bought Purely Belter on DVD and it's a great film I think.

Yes it's depressing - but Newcastle is depressing when you are sitting in beautiful Melbourne and watching it on film.

I get a buzz everytime I watch it just because of the last scene - the last image that is left in your mind is brilliant.

Makes you think where idiots like Kieron Dyer get off when you get a glimpse of how the locals really live through their football.

in The Full Monty the lead character is a blades fan and wears the kit in some of the scenes

Theone I am thinking of the main character was a gun Sunday league player who ends up trialling with the Blades, but has a few problems with discipline along the way.

Purely belter is a great movie - that part where jerry man is explaining the 'everythings a pound store.' - CLASSIC

Mike Basset England manager is bloody hilarious. Mean machine is teriffic too

Pretty sure it's When Saturday Comes.

Yesterday's Hero is another with the 'talented-plss-pot-turned-good' storyline.

ID - Like football factory, it's pretty much people beating the ******** out of each other. An undercover cop getting involved with football hooligans at a club, that is fictitiously made up so not to offend real teams IIRC, called Shadwell. Certain it's based on Millwall though. Nothing really interesting, the ending is ridiculous.

About A Boy's got an Arsenal crest in it. If that counts? :p

And in A Room for Romeo Brass they are mad Notts County supporters. If that counts..

Oh and also in Billy Elliott when he brings the Magpies jumper to his dancing teacher when she wants to know what is important to him or something.

Isn't there a film about Shaolin monks and soccer? Or something like that?

Is it called 'The Cup' - where a group of monks are trying to be able to watch the world cup final on TV?

Isn't there also a film about the 2 bottom world ranked sides playing on the same day as the world cup?

Well About A Boy was written by the same person who wrote Fever Pitch, so it counts :p

Fever Pitch- love this movie 'cos it reminds me of being in England when Mickey Thomas scored that goal to win the league for Arsenal the celebration scenes give me goosebumps. (I have too admit in my naive younger days I was a Gooner for a year or two, still second too Pompey tho you understand)
Mean Machine- Great movie if a little cliched at times.
Mike Bassett England Manager- This is the ultimate movie for anyone who lived in England in '86 and was gutted by that little cheatin' Argie. Funny as hell and great ending. :D :D
Escape to Victory- Great movie mainly due too the appearance of some superstars such as Pele and Bobby Moore. Also a cameo from former Pompey player Kevin O'Callaghan (as a 'keeper!!) was a highlight until he got injured and was replced by that awful American Sly Stallone.
Just love Footy movies.
