I was always first a football fan (soccer) then an AFL fan. Can't wait for tomorrow mornings clash with the Poms.

Question without notice KangaMan:
What do you mean, you never thought you'd say...etc? Sounds like you thought you'd hate football, but something has made you look at it a little differently yes? Not trying to brainwash you, but more and more people are finding that the world game is not the boring devil game that mainstream media would have us believe! Just curious.

Blaming the mainstream media is just a soccer copout. If people would watch it, the mainstream media would have it on, all they care about is economics.

I played soccer for 10 years, enjoyed every game, but still find it as boring as bat**** to sit down and watch (except for highlights).

Soccer is dull. The entire game is made up of the parts of AFL that crowds boo.

Playing it is fine, but so is playing chinese checkers.

Cricket I don't much like either, but at least when there's an interesting bit of play, its likely to last longer.

In a life as exciting as yours?????????????/

Find that hard to believe :D

Depends who's playing - good soccer (premier league, FA, Bundesliga) is brilliant to watch, bad soccer (NSL) is one of the crappest spectator games ever.

At least with bad cricket it's over soon (unless it's a dragged out 5 day draw)

soccer gets more people to domestic games and more people to international games!

The solution, more international games, no Asia qualifying is holding the game back.

Yeah i used to hate it, thought it was boring...

The recent Japan/Korea world cup made me change my mind, sensational stuff... big robbie keane fan..and now the socceroos, this will be Australia's number one sport in 25 years!!

Soccer (aside form Indoor Soccer) is more boring and awkward looking than any other sport in the world. I was impressed though with Germany at the World Cup getting through to the final on sheer tactics and tenacity.

I quite like cricket.

Just watched Australia v England and (especially the first half) was awesome. Good free flowing game and an Aussie win.

Watching Australia play just doesn't happen very often. If you are going to compare Soccer with cricket then you need to compare Pura Milk Cup with NSL and the Socceroos with the Australian Cricket Team.

Test Match cricket is easily the most boring form of sport ever invented. Lets play for five days and still don't know who won! WTF...

Cricket and Soccer are similar - long boring patches and then something happens.

I prefer footy - long fast exciting patches and then there's a ball-up.

Nonetheless good for national pride to beat the poms at soccer. Maybe one day (eg 2095) the BARFL will mean the poms can return the favour to the All-Australian AFL side.

Just a follow up to that idea of future Footy internationals - and in line with the arguments about apples with apples in terms of level of league:

The AFL can only at this stage be compared directly with the NSL. Both are minor professional levels in world terms, both have similar numbers of adult players to pick from.

International Soccer has no equivalent in Footy terms yet, apart from the Inter-rules Tests against Ireland. On this point I was interested when in England to find so many people who'd seen these games and thought them "more exciting than our football" (ie English Premier League").

Long term Australian Football needs (and deserves) to be played at the highest level - ie International.

Give the USA twenty years - the revos will be the big improvers, though New Zealand might get there if they get admitted to the Teal Cup in 2005.
