The better team? We let in 6 goals and scored 5 in 2006 in 2022 we let in 6 and scored 4. For me the fact we didn't get flogged in 2006 and played Brazil and Italy and a half decent Croatia I'll say 2006 is better even though we won a game less. Good win against Denmark in 2022 where we were unfancied just like vs Tunisia. Had chances vs France too just as we gave them away. A better squad in 2006 though.

I believe that the 2006 squad was better. The 2022 squad fought hard and made their own luck. Some sides were tentative against us as well.
However, it needs to be said that the 2010 squad was the best but had no luck in South Africa.

2006 our starting XI played at the following clubs:

Schwarzer - Boro
Chippers - Basel
Neill - Blackburn
Moore - Newcastle
Emmo - Blackburn
Grella - Parma
Bresciano - Palermo
Culina - PSV
Cahill - Everton
Kewell - Liverpool
Viduka - Boro

On bench we had:

Kennedy - Bundesliga
Popovic - Palace
Millsy - Sydney FC
Beauchamp - Central Coast
Skoko - Stoke
Sterjovski - Basel
Wilkshire - Bristol
Lazaridis - Birmingham
Aloisi - Alaves
Archie Thompson - Melbourne Victory
Kalac - AC Milan
Covic - Hammarby

All in top class leagues apart from Chippers. Basel still a pretty big club European wise. Even the second XI was reasonably strong.

Going to be hard to top this for some time

On paper, the 2006 Socceroos were far more talented and could have gone further with a bit more luck, especially since we had a top-class coach. But the 3-6-1 that Guus Hiddink used didn't quite work as intended - we struggled offensively, and our defence was a bit leaky, which wasn't helped by some of Hiddink's selections (Kalac over Schwarzer? I mean, really?).

The 2022 Socceroos wildly overachieved. A very limited but very well-drilled side which dragged most opponents down to its level with sheer physicality and quick counterattacks. Graham Arnold might not be a great manager, but IMO he is a lucky one (e.g. the Redmayne gamble actually coming off), and he couldn't have done more with what he had.

Disagree on 2010. 06 was better. Pim Verbeek was a ****wit though playing without a striker vs Germany.

Gutless.

Sliding doors. What if Kewell played vs Italy. What if Nesta didn't get injured too. No Materazzi and no red card. Kewell was a gun though.
