" Up ahead in teh doorway, I saw a shimmering light "

you have taken that completely out of context - this is the real lyric...

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

in its context, it's pretty bloody obvious that 'a dark desert highway' is Route 66. Route 66 runs through Texas, New Mexico and Arizona before ending in, you guessed it, CALIFORNIA

'a shimmering light' therefore represents the bright lights of Los Angeles (where Route 66 terminates)

the song may be about drugs, but there's no way you can twist that lyric to support such a theory

Counting the Beat was another one for the She-Bop board.

Bruce Springsteen is worth a thought: The River and Born in the USA sprang to my mind.

And if anyone can tell me what The Riddle by Nik Kershaw is about, I'll be very happy. Its always good to write these reports where no one else knows the answers either. :)

When in year 10 I used Scatterbrain's Don't Call Me Dude for a poetry assignment.

Distinction!
Now that's a classic song! I was talking about that the other night actually. Nice choice. :thumbsu:

The same could be said of America's ' Ventura Highway ' which makes reference to ' alligator lizards in the air ' and 'sorry boy but I've been hit by purple rain ' . However, that particular song clearly talks about daydreams and escape to that ' special ' place we all long to run away to where life is footloose and fancy free.
Take the whole song in it's contaxt.
here's another one for you

" They stab it with their steely knives but they just can't slay the beast " .
Pretty self explanatory, if you ask me.

I have to analyze a song or songs for English and write about their deeper meaning ect, ect.
Does anybody have any ideas for songs that are easy to analyze?
I've been thinking CCR because they're a hippee band and their songs have many hidden messages about the Vietnam War..

Thanks for your help,
Locky.

BIG TIP:

What does your teacher like?

I got an A in high school for doing an essay on Bob Dylan for my dirty, smelly, hippy english teacher.;)

If you want to sort of cheat, go to http://www.thebrpage.net click on "songs" then "Defining Bad Religion".
Click on any of the songs on the right hand column, I would choose, Generator, Atomic Garden, Against The Grain, Skyscraper, American Jesus, Anesthesia, Billy, Infected, I Want To Conquer The World, Los Angeles Is Burning, Suffer, Stranger than Fiction.

Most of these songs are very open to interpretation and this site has a lot of discussion of them. Personally Generator or Atomic Garden are the best as they are very vague. Cease is also a very good one.

When has drug addiction ever been known as "the beast" ?
